Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt aimed to halve traffic-related deaths in the Bangkok area from 13 in 2022 to 6 people in 2023. Chadchart along with Bangkok officials from various departments yesterday discussed safety measures for the upcoming Songkran Festival. He said this year’s Songkran measures would focus on the “Don’t drink and drive, don’t drive after drinking” campaign in an effort to reduce the risk of accidents caused by alcohol. One of the preventative measures is an alcohol sales ban in official Songkran activity areas. “Although the number of accidents may not have been significant in Bangkok in previous years, there might be an increase this year because this year is the first year that all COVID-19 restrictions have been eased,” Chadchart said. Phuket – now a lot more than bars, beaches and temples Phuket has transformed into a highly sophisticated tourist destination with plenty to see and experience for all budgets. Although it is often known for its tropical paradise and infamous Patong nightlife, there is much more to enjoy on the island. In fact, Patong Beach makes up only a small portion of the island’s landmass, which is about 80% the size of Singapore. As the island has developed there has been a significant increase in accommodation and destinations outside of Patong. In Phang Nga province, at least 48 leatherback sea turtle hatchlings were recently observed emerging from their nest and making their way to the Andaman Sea, an annual occurrence that needs more supervision than in the past due to the influx of tourists to the coastline’s beaches. The nest, which contained a total of 96 eggs, is located in the Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Muang National Park and been protected since the mother laid the eggs. According to park officials, of the 96 eggs, only 48 were able to hatch and reach the sea on Monday night. 36 of the eggs were not fertilised, while 12 did not hatch. The officials believe that the nest was too deep, as it was 72 centimeters underground. They also mentioned that the eggs hatched 6 days later than the typical 55 day incubation period. In fact, Patong Beach makes up only a small portion of the island’s landmass, which is about 80% the size of Singapore. As the island has developed there has been a significant increase in accommodation and destinations outside of Patong. Despite some believing that Phuket has lost its charm due to its popularity and development, we believe that the charm still remains, along with many new attractions. Visitors can enjoy some of the best beaches in the world, visit other tropical islands, zip through the treetops of the many tropical rainforests, watch spectacular, world-class, family-friendly shows, experience Thai-style nightlife, sample some of the world’s best cuisines, or shop at the numerous markets, duty-free emporiums and western-style shopping centres. Despite these popular attractions, visitors can still find secluded beaches where they may not see anyone for the entire day. They can also find beachside restaurants serving delicious Thai food for just a few dollars, or visit temples where the daily routines have remained unchanged for centuries. The beaches, bars and temples are still here, there’s just so much more to see now. Darkened Water in Patong Caused by Plankton Bloom BANGKOK (NNT) - The Phuket Fisheries Office has explained that darkened sea water along Patong beach in Phuket was a result of a plankton bloom, with authorities not expecting the phenomenon to impact tourism. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1291178-darkened-water-in-patong-caused-by-plankton-bloom/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Phuket Fisheries Office has explained that darkened sea water along Patong beach in Phuket was a result of a plankton bloom, with authorities not expecting the phenomenon to impact tourism. The announcement came after photos of murky black water flowing from the beach started circulating on social media. The seawater from the mouth of Pak Bang canal to a stretch of beach in the Patong area turned black, prompting tourists to avoid venturing into the sea. Sitthipol Muangsong, head of the Phuket Fisheries Office, led members of the press on an inspection of Patong beach. Upon inspection, he identified the event as a plankton bloom, a natural occurrence that takes place every year. The phenomenon causes seawater to become brown, red, green, or murky black. Sitthipol explained that the color corresponds with high concentrations of plankton in the water. He added that the bloom generally occurs in the summer due to changes in tidal or wind patterns and lasts only for a short while. He further noted that the Phuket Fisheries Office will ask the Phuket Marine Biological Center to collect samples of sea water at the beach for testing to be sure. The samples will be analyzed to determine the water quality so locals and tourists can have peace of mind. Incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said today (Tuesday) that he is happy with 22 as the election number of his United Thai Nation Party, saying that any number is fine for him. A senior member of the Thai Liberal Party, however, says 22 may not be a lucky number. Prayut said that the election numbers alone may make it easier for voters to remember the parties for which they will vote, but the policies of each party are what people vote for or against, adding that the United Thai Nation Party will continue the policies already implemented by the government. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a former election commissioner and, currently, strategy chief of the Thai Liberal Party, pointed out that 22 could invoke memories of May 22nd, 2014, when the military, led by General Prayut, staged a coup and overthrew the government of then Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Responding to a reporter’s question about how many seats he expects his party to win in the May 14th general election, he said that he cannot aim for 100 adding, however, that his party has competent people who are ready to do their jobs in parliament. Asked by another reporter whether he hopes that his party will be at the core of the next government, Prayut said that it is an odd question because every party has the same goal of being in government. Red Cross Phuket blood donations at Central Phuket Immigration Chief Col Thanet has expressed his gratitude towards the local expat community after their big turnout to donate blood at the Central Festival shopping centre last week. The blood donation drive aimed to boost the dwindling reserves of Rh-negative type blood and saw 139 foreigners in attendance. People of Asian descent have the lowest percentage of Rh-negative blood types so it’s not a common blood type in Asia. So hospitals and medical facilities will not usually keep a large stock of Rh-negative blood and are often in urgent need of stocks. People should be aware that things like 90 day reporting or visa renewals, due during those dates, should be concluded before the office close for the holiday. There are three immigration offices in Phuket – the main one at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town, another outpost in Patong along the beach road, and a newer office in Cherngtalay at the Blue Tree complex in Srisoontorn Road. Meanwhile, the Transport Company, Thailand’s largest bus transport network, has recently announced its plan to operate 4,500 daily trips to accommodate travellers during the upcoming Songkran New Year. This festival is one of the busiest times for travel in Thailand, as many people travel to visit family and friends in other provinces. It’s also measured as the Seven Days of Danger when the country registers its largest road death tolls for the year.
