The Thai cabinet decided today (Tuesday) to extend the 5-baht/litre excise tax cut on diesel fuel, from May 21st until July 20th, to ease the burden on the public and businesses and to stimulate the economy. Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said that the cabinet’s decision is intended to prevent the retail price of diesel from increasing, in the wake of global oil price fluctuations due to the war in Ukraine and the baht’s depreciation, which would slow down economic recovery and increase the cost of living. Excise Department Director-General Ekniti Nitithanprapas said that the extension of the tax cut means that the department’s tax collection will fall short by about 20 billion baht. Elderly woman shouts, curses at PM during Thai leader’s Ratchaburi visit PHOTO: LINE TODAY An elderly woman has been dragged away after shouting and cursing at the Thai PM as he visited the western province of Ratchaburi. According to a Nation Thailand report, the unnamed woman was part of a crowd of people who had gathered at Ban Pong Community Hall yesterday morning to greet PM Prayut Chan-o-cha. It’s understood that when the PM appeared, the woman starting shouting and cursing at him. She was quickly subdued by two female police officers, who covered her mouth and attempted to push her out of the way. However, the woman continued her shouting and cursing, forcing other officers to drag her away to an area behind a parked van. According to the report, one officer told witnesses that the woman was fainting and that she was taken away to receive first-aid. During the same visit, another woman held up three fingers, a well-known gesture to symbolise opposition to the government. She was also quickly removed after officials surrounded her and escorted her away. Not everyone was in favour of expressing anti-government sentiment, with several people in the crowd shouting at the woman and berating her for embarrassing the residents of Ban Pong. It’s understood that a member of the press who was present took photographs and filmed the incident, with officials subsequently asking to see his press pass and questioning his reasons for filming. The PM was visiting Ratchaburi to check on the progress of various government projects in the province. Political debate is heating up in Thailand ahead of the general election, which is expected to be held on May 7. The PM has already dropped hints that he could dissolve the House of Representatives following a Cabinet meeting scheduled to take place on March 14. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has urged companies to consider allowing their employees to work from home in response to a recent drop in air quality, which has affected as many as 1.4 million people. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, an operations center has been established to monitor air quality nationwide. The public is also encouraged to protect against PM 2.5 and pollutants by remaining indoors or wearing masks when outside. Minister Anutin noted that private sector employees working from home will mean fewer vehicles on the road and reduced emissions and air pollution. He also announced the launch of electric buses in the capital to help improve overall air quality. According to the Bangkok Medical Service Department, from January 1 to March 10, over 31,000 people sought medical assistance for problems that were exacerbated by poor air quality. These included chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, eczema, stroke, and conjunctivitis or pink eye. Other reported conditions included pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, nasal cryotherapy, asthma, influenza, ischemic heart disease and lung cancer. According to the Air Quality and Noise Management Division Bangkok, PM2.5 levels are predicted to continue rising until March 20. However, starting March 16, a southerly wind is forecast to prevail over Bangkok and its neighboring regions, providing much-needed relief and improving the smog situation. A foreign man has died while on a visit to Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s tallest mountain, in the northern province of Chiang Mai. It’s understood the man, whose name and nationality have not been released, lost consciousness in the Doi Inthanon car park after travelling there with a tour group on Sunday. The tourist was discovered at around 1.00pm and efforts were made to resuscitate him but rescuers did not succeed. The man’s body has been sent to Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong Hospital where an autopsy will be carried out. According to a Coconuts report, officials are attributing his death to underlying health conditions. However, other sources point to Chiang Mai’s severe pollution problem, with dangerous air quality currently accompanied by high temperatures. On Sunday, the northern province had the dubious accolade of having the worst air pollution in the world, with the situation only made worse by the high heat and humidity. Residents in Chiang Mai are being urged to refrain from outdoor activities and to use an air purifier at home, particularly where there are children, elderly people, and people with underlying health conditions. Fine PM2.5 particles are capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract and causing irritation to the lungs, as well as to the eyes, nose, and throat. Other symptoms include coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, and shortness of breath, according to the Coconuts report. Yesterday, air pollution in Chiang Mai remained at unhealthy levels, while in Bangkok, the level was considered unhealthy for those in so-called vulnerable groups. Dr. Eak (Ekkapob Pianpises) recently unveiled a sub-committee report on the Study of Impacts on Health and Monitoring the Enforcement of Public Health Related Laws under the Committee on Public Health. The report points out that the current e-cigarette ban in Thailand is ineffective; instead, it has led to issues in terms of the clarity of the law, which has caused unaligned interpretations of the law for relevant agencies, unfair treatment towards e-cigarette users and problems of corruption while being unable to reduce the smoking rate or prevent the sale of products to children and young people. The report suggests that the government lift the ban on e-cigarettes and apply harm reduction measures along with current tobacco control policies.
