  2. Four new airlines in Thailand The Thai Transport Ministry has announced that there are four companies seeking licenses to operate airline services in Thailand – P80 Air, Really Cool Air, Landarch Airline and Siam Seaplane. The process of obtaining air service licenses is expected to take some time, and the four new airlines are expected to be approved to operate next year. They join a crowded sky over Thailand which already has Thai Air Asia, Thai Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai Viet Jet, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways. Thai Smile, the short haul and discount offshoot from Thai Airways is expected to be amalgamated into the parent company. The four new aviation companies have contacted the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) for an air operating license (AOL). Once they get an AOL, they can proceed to ask for an air operating certificate for carrying out airline services. The source revealed that P80 Air has made the most progress as it has already applied for an AOL, and its application is being considered by the CAAT. It is expected that Really Cool Air will submit its AOL application soon, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. P80Air will be operated by the P80 Air Co Ltd, which is owned by Prayudh Mahagitsiri, whose Thoresen Thai Agencies (TTA) also has several logistics companies in its stable, including a marine transport firm. The company is expected to invest about 2 billion baht to get the new airline off the ground. It will provide both chartered and regular flights, using Boeing 787-800 planes. In the first year, the airline will lease four planes for the services and expand its fleet to 20 in four years. On the other hand, Really Cool Air is owned by Patee Sarasin, the former CEO of Nok Air. After leaving Nok Air, Patee started a tourism booking platform called Really Really Cool. The source said Really Cool Air will also be a full-service airline, offering long-haul flight services to Australia and Europe. The source added that M-Landarch Co Ltd, which is the authorised distributor of Cessna planes in Thailand, will operate the Landarch Airline with Cessna C208B aircraft. Each Cessna C208B can fly up to 12 passengers, and the airline will operate from Hat Yai to other southern provinces. Initially, it will fly to Betong in Yala, Naratiwat and Surat Thani. Finally, Siam Seaplane will be run by Siam Seaplane Co Ltd, using its fleet of seaplanes to provide flight services to tourist destinations on the sea. The source said the CAAT is likely to approve Siam Seaplane to initially provide taxi services instead of full route services until the CAAT is certain of its safety. 3. Thai listed companies strengthen workforce even amid COVID-19 outbreak BANGKOK (SET) - No company was spared by the COVID-19 pandemic, large or small, but Thai listed companies have proved their resilience again with a growing workforce. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1289056-thai-listed-companies-strengthen-workforce-even-amid-covid-19-outbreak/
  4. BANGKOK (SET) - No company was spared by the COVID-19 pandemic, large or small, but Thai listed companies have proved their resilience again with a growing workforce. Following the outbreak in 2020 that led to lockdown measures and prolonged economic downturn, Thailand’s overall unemployment jumped, from 1.02 percent to its peak of 2.25 percent during 2020-2022. The unemployment rate reduced in the third quarter of 2022 after the relaxing of COVID-19 measures, to end the quarter at 1.24 percent. Against all odds, the downturn did not affect Thai listed companies’ hiring during the period and the Thai capital market has proved to be the country’s main funding source in driving the country’s economy. As The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and Market for Alternative Investment (mai) saw total fund mobilization of USD 29.73 billion which included the offering amount of USD 12.52 billion by 111 initial public offerings (IPOs) during 2020-2022, while listed companies actually increased their workforce. SET’s Research Department recently compiled the employment data from Form 56-1 One Report and found that the combined workforce of 775 listed companies was 1.74 million at the end of 2021, an increase of 141,409 or 8.8 percent from the previous year (125,676 by SET-listed companies and 16,133 by mai-listed companies). Significantly, the number of listed companies’ workforce at the end of 2021 already surpassed that of the pre-COVID crisis level. The increase was attributable mainly to business restructuring, mergers and product diversification among large-sized corporates listed before 2021 as well as the employee base of companies listed in 2021. At the end of the year, listed companies’ total workforce accounted for 4.6 percent of the employed population. Their gross payroll amounted to USD 23.91 billion and they contributed 24 percent of 2021 individual income taxes based on the tax rate at 15 percent. In the year, companies in the Services industry group – from commerce and tourism & leisure to health care services sectors - showed the largest workforce (543,867 workers or 31.1 percent of total) and the biggest increase in workforce (70,789 workers or 49.9 percent of total increase) thanks to the end of strict COVID-19 measures. The data corresponded well with the SET Note Volume 10/2565 SET CEO Survey (Special Issue). Asked about their human resource policy during the outbreak, the CEOs admitted that they felt the impacts on business operations but most of them tried to maintain the workforce and even welcome new hires in preparation for economic recovery. Once again, figures affirmed how resilient Thai companies have been and will be. 6. PHOTO: Flickr/Patong Beach Lodge Representatives of Phuket’s business sector and the Office of Vocational Education Commission have signed an agreement aimed at tackling the labour shortage on the island. The Bangkok Post reports that under the agreement, vocational institutes would provide graduates and part-time students to the tourism and service industries. Latest figures show the island currently needs around 30,000 additional workers. Multiple sectors of Phuket’s hospitality and tourism economy have been screaming for new staff to keep their businesses growing following the new influx of tourists since October last year. Somporn Pandam, deputy secretary-general of the OVEC, says study courses can be adjusted to allow suitably-qualified graduates to take up work immediately after graduating. He says the Phuket model could serve as a pilot for other vocational institutes and businesses around the country. Phuket’s tourism sector is bouncing back in a big way, following Covid-19, but with countless workers having left the province during the pandemic, the island is experiencing an extreme labour shortage. Many former workers in the tourism sector have not returned or are now working in other sectors. The director of Phuket Vocational College, Witthaya Ketchu, says his institute has played an important role in trying to address the problem, by holding job fairs and inviting skilled graduates from elsewhere in the region to attend. “The agreement signed today is also for over 3,000 business firms and 48 educational institutes under OVEC to arrange for students to work part-time in Phuket during their vacation. It is hoped this would help solve the labour shortage in the province.” Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew, who was one of the signatories to yesterday’s agreement, says addressing the labour shortage is critical to the island’s bid to host the 2028 Specialised Expo and to promoting Phuket as an international medical hub within the next 5 years. 8. Two seafood restaurants in Phuket have been charged with the illegal possession of protected marine life, according to a Phuket News report. The unnamed floating restaurants have been found in breach of environmental laws after authorities seized a variety of protected marine life. These cases come up from time to time as the demand continues for the serving up of exotic marine life. Officials from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources visited both restaurants on Saturday, after a number of video clips on social media appeared to show that they had protected marine life on the premises. During a search of both premises, officials found a variety of ornamental fish which cannot be caught legally. It’s understood that one restaurant had 11 protected sea creatures, including butterflyfish, lionfish, orange-lined triggerfish, and moray eels. At the other, officials found 4 creatures, including moorish idols, lionfish and dog-faced puffer fish. The Phuket News reports that the management of both establishments have been taken to Karon Police Station for legal processing. Late last year, another 3 seafood restaurants in Karon – Chic Restaurant, Bounty Seafood, and Ton Tan Seafood – were charged with the illegal sale of baby parrotfish. 10. The Chonburi Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has confirmed that hundreds of dead fish previously washed up on Bang Saen Beach were the result of a local fishing boat accident. A massive number of dead fish were reported having been washed up on Bang Saen Beach in Chonburi on March 11th, prompting an immediate investigation between the DMCR and the Upper Gulf of Thailand Coastal Resources Research and Development Center, DMCR deputy director-general, Mr. Apichai Ekwanakul, revealed to local media. He said the fish was mostly the same species of Anodontostoma Chacunda, also known as the shortnose gizzard shad, and they were of similar size, leading to an initial assumption that they might have escaped from a fishing trap.
