According to a Nation Thailand report, Atthapol Charoenchansa, the department’s acting director-general issued a 24/7 alert yesterday. Firefighters have been ordered to check their equipment is in good working condition as they were placed on standby in areas of the north, north-east, west, and central Thailand. Related agencies in the affected areas are also setting up war rooms at various national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The Protected Areas Regional Office has also been tasked with identifying which body is responsible for fighting fires that spread across borders. On Tuesday, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency identified a total of 3,768 fire hotspots across the kingdom, the highest since January 1. 4. NARATHIWAT (NNT) - The government is increasing security measures and efforts to protect residents in the southern border provinces as part of its ongoing push for peace in the region. Representatives of the government, led by Commander of the 4th Army Region Gen Pornsak Poolsawat, met with senior officials from the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Fourth Region on March 2 to discuss solutions to the region’s security problems and ways to enforce the law against separatist groups. The priority, according to Gen Poolsawat, is to ensure state officials can carry out their duties safely and that residents can go about their daily lives without fear. He noted that persistent security problems in the South have allowed illegal activities, such as contraband smuggling, drug trafficking, and weapon smuggling, to flourish. As a result, authorities plan to increase surveillance along the border to close the escape routes used by those seeking to cause violence. The meeting also discussed ways to rebuild residents’ trust in authorities and the role of the Chor Por Pithak Puenti (Chor Por Area Protection) unit, which works closely with residents to keep an eye out for insurgents. The unit collaborates with a squad that patrols mountainous areas to search for insurgents’ hideouts. Lt Gen Santi Sakultanak, Director of the Fourth Region office of ISOC, emphasized the importance of enforcing laws against insurgents in a fair manner to avoid causing further violence. He added that dialogue is crucial to resolving the unrest, and state officials must keep communication open to reach out to leaders and communities and create an understanding of the security situation. Last year, peace talks resumed after a long suspension due to the pandemic, resulting in an agreement on a roadmap toward the development of a comprehensive peace plan. 6. BANGKOK (NNT) - In a bid to become the largest bus operator in Bangkok, Thai Smile Bus announced plans to nearly double its fleet of electric buses to 3,100 and expand its coverage to 122 routes this year. Currently, the privately owned company operates 1,250 electric buses on 71 routes in the capital city. The expansion is made possible by the Department of Land Transport’s reform of bus routes, which granted permission for private operators to use electric vehicles on 77 new routes in the greater Bangkok metropolitan area. Thai Smile Bus was granted the right to operate 71 of these routes, with two other operators given permits for the remaining routes. Thai Smile Bus said it also supplied electric buses to other private bus operators on 45 of the 53 routes that had previously used diesel-powered buses. The hiring of more drivers and the acquisition of additional buses will enable Thai Smile Bus to meet the Department of Land Transport’s goal of increasing the number of public buses by 1,850 this year. This move, expected to reduce air pollution and provide a cheaper transportation alternative for commuters, is in line with Thailand’s push to use clean energy for public transport, as stated by Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob in January. The government said the support provided by Thai Smile Bus for the adoption of clean energy to reduce pollution and provide transport alternatives for commuters in Bangkok is highly commendable. 10. BANGKOK (NNT) - An investigation is set to be launched into a Member of Parliament (MP), who is alleged to have engaged in illegal gambling activities in his office within the parliament building. Parliament President Chuan Leekpai has announced that the MP in question will be probed to determine whether he has violated the House’s code of ethics. The complaint was filed by the Association for the Protection of the Constitution’s Secretary-General, Srisuwan Janya, alleging that the MP had been playing card games for money with three fellow MPs on January 11th. The petition also claimed that the card game was recorded via a spycam, and the video clip shows a clear image of the accused MP, but the other three MPs’ images were less clear. Srisuwan stated that the video clip was mailed to him anonymously. He also disclosed that gambling activities had also occurred at the old parliament building, but there was insufficient evidence to take action against any alleged wrongdoers. Gambling is prohibited in Thailand, and the act also constitutes a criminal offense under the MP ethics law and the Gambling Act. Chuan, who chairs the House committee on MPs’ ethical conduct, said will decide on the appropriate punishment if the allegation is found to be true. 12. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Education Ministry in Thailand is set to recruit around 30,000 retired teachers or retired specialists to work as volunteer teachers, providing skill training and special education. This initiative is part of the government’s third phase of the operation plan to deal with the aging society, which is aimed at helping the elderly remain happy after retirement, while their potential can be used to develop the potential of people in other age groups. According to Deputy Government Spokeswoman Trisulee Trisaranakul, the project would be open to retired teachers and retired specialists from around the country. The applications would be processed via an online system, and the Education Ministry will soon announce details of the project on its website. The project would be implemented in cooperation with the Labour Ministry, the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, and the Interior Ministry. The recruited retirees would be assigned as volunteer teachers to help schools, teachers, parents, communities, and other sectors concerned. Many of them would teach work skills to communities or laborers under projects of the Labour Ministry. Trisulee highlighted the importance of the implementation of the operation plan, as Thailand had become an aging society last year, and the population of senior citizens is expected to rise to 28% of the total population in 11 years. This project will not only provide education and training but also help the elderly remain engaged and active in society, which is crucial for their well-being. The third-phase operation plan is designed for implementation from this year until 2037. The Education Ministry’s project is one of the measures taken by the Thai government to address the challenges that come with an aging society.
