Vehicles are stuck in a traffic jam on Hanoi's Nguyen Trai Street in August 2022. Photo by VnExpress/Ngoc Thanh The Hanoi Public Transport Management Center has proposed collecting tolls from vehicles entering downtown areas starting 2024, with 15 toll booths on nine routes with high traffic density. In a report sent to the Department of Transport, the center divided the project into three phases. During the first phase, toll booths would be situated at nine locations on routes with high traffic density leading to downtown areas. The trial would go on until Nov. 30, 2025, when its results would be evaluated to prepare for the second and third phase. During the second phase, from 2026 to 2030, areas where tolls are required would be expanded to include the southern side of the Red River. The expanded area where tolls are applicable would see Ring Road 3-Thanh Tri Bridge-Phap Van-Mai Dich-Pham Van Dong-Thang Long Bridge-Au Co-Nghi Tam-Yen Phu-Tran Nhat Duat-Ring Road 3 as boundaries. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has reported a new case of monkeypox in a 40-year-old man who returned from overseas. Health authorities are now monitoring the symptoms of people in close contact with this patient. The new patient, which is Thailand’s 11th confirmed case of monkeypox, reportedly developed symptoms of fever and rashes on his hips, hands, and arms on 8 October, when he was in Qatar. Dr. Thares Krasanairawiwong, Acting Director General of the DDC, said the patient received an initial diagnosis as a probable monkeypox case at a hospital in Pathum Thani province after his arrival on 15 October. The patient was then transferred to Bamrasnaradur Infectious Diseases Institute, where lab results confirmed a monkeypox infection. Deputy Director General of the DDC Dr. Sopon Iamsirithaworn said this patient is currently the only active case in Thailand, as the previous 10 cases have already recovered from the disease. The DDC is closely monitoring the symptoms of 10 close contacts. The DDC has asked hospitals across the country to ensure the preparedness of protocol for patients with suspicious symptoms, who should have their specimens collected for monkeypox tests and be isolated until a lab result returns. People who develop suspicious symptoms of monkeypox are encouraged to visit a nearby hospital to get tested or call the department’s 1422 hotline for more information. BANGKOK (NNT) - The number of hospital admissions due to Covid has been on a continual decline in Thailand, but two cases of the XBB strain have now been found. This has prompted the health ministry to elevate the disease screening intensity at airports to screen for infected persons who traveled from abroad. Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) Director-General Supakit Sirilak said 128 Covid samples were randomly inspected last week. All samples were found to be of the Omicron variant, with most being of the BA.5 subvariant. The BA.2.75 subvariant was not found in any of the samples. Dr. Supakit reported two persons were found infected with the XBB subvariant of Omicron. The first is a 60-year-old foreign woman who had traveled from abroad. The person did not experience coughs or fever during isolation, and has already recovered. The second person is a 49-year-old Thai woman who presented with coughs and irritation of the throat. The person did not experience fever and has already recovered. Dr. Supakit said another strain – BF.7 –was found in two persons. The first is a foreign man who resided in Thailand. The latter is a Thai woman who is a healthcare worker. Both were without severe symptoms. Health officials also found 10 persons who were infected with the BN.1 strain. The DMS chief said the BA.5 subvariant remains the primary strain spreading in Thailand. The Department of Disease Control (DDC) urged people traveling abroad to exercise caution and pay heed to the advisory issued by the local health authority. DDC Deputy Director-General Sopon Iamsirithaworn said people should wear face masks in crowded areas and keep social distancing. They should also wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol gel. Those who have yet to receive the booster dose of vaccine should do so, as the booster shot will lessen symptoms severity in patients. A group of five Thai adults are being hunted by Pattaya police after they allegedly stomped into a pool villa, sprayed gunshots, and mistakenly attacked renters over a business dispute. The pool villa is located on Jomtien Second Road in Pattaya. One man in a grey T-shirt knocked on the door of the tenants villa at around 7:10 AM today, October 18th, and asked the renters if they knew the person he was showing on his phone. All renters shook their heads, and the man left. However, after 15 minutes the same man came back in a white Toyota Alphard with 5 men reportedly armed with firearms. They then began spraying bullets at several vehicles parked at the villa before storming into the room by force to ask the renters the same question but by gunpoint this time. About a 5-metre stretch of the irrigation road near the Chao Chet sluice gate caved in, allowing water from a swollen Noi River to gush into the Chao Chet-Bang Yeehon Canal and onwards into areas in Sena, Bang Sai and Lat Bua Luang districts. Ayutthaya Governor Niwat Rungsakhon said, last night, that a huge drainage pipe had been installed beneath the irrigation road by the Royal Irrigation Department. Water from the Lam Tha Daeng Canal, which connects with the swollen Noi River, has already breached an embankment into the landfill, in Thewarat sub-district in Chaiyo District. About 300,000 tonnes of rotting garbage are in the landfill, covering an area of about 42.3 hectares, which has the capacity to take another 25 tonnes of trash per day.
