BANGKOK (NNT) - COVID-19 vaccination for small children aged 6 months to 4 years commenced on 12 October. Vaccination is voluntary, and parents are now able to take their children to get the shots at a local healthcare facility. Health minister Anutin Charnvirakul inspected the vaccination service for small children in Nonthaburi province. The first and second shots for this age group are delivered 4 weeks apart. The third shot is delivered 8 weeks after the second. The children receive 3 micrograms of the vaccine with each shot, which is substantially less than the adult dose of 30 micrograms. A vial of the dark-red cap type of the Pfizer vaccine is enough for 10 doses in small children. Department of Disease Control Director-General Tares Krassanairawiwong noted that the first batch of 500,000 doses arrived at all hospitals nationwide yesterday. If there is a demand for additional vaccine doses in any locality, the respective provincial health office may request them from the DDC. Parents, meanwhile, may call the DDC hotline number 1422 to inquire about the vaccine for small children. Dr. Tares said about 300,000 parents have expressed their intention to have their children vaccinated. Parents may take their children to the nearest public health facility offering the vaccination service. Gov’t doubles down on drug, gun control following Nong Bua Lamphu massacre BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government is increasing its effort on drug suppression and gun control, following the tragic daycare center attack in Nong Bua Lamphu province. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government is increasing its effort on drug suppression and gun control, following the tragic daycare center attack in Nong Bua Lamphu province. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha chaired a task force meeting with the police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Ministry of Education on drug suppression and gun regulations. After the meeting, the Prime Minister said the government will be enforcing laws related to gun and ammunition control more strictly, particularly on gun licensing and ownership. From now, the government will be making sure that those applying for gun ownership and carrying licenses fully comply with the criteria, including a psychiatric regulation. They should bear a certification letter from their superior or community leaders, and should not have threatening behaviors against society. The meeting today discussed the possibility to revoke gun licenses among holders who have mental issues, who use drugs, and who pose a threat to society. The meeting also discussed more stringent suppression of illegal weapon trade, and updates to some laws and regulations related to the matter. On the suppression of illicit drugs, the Prime Minister said the government has been controlling the import and export of certain chemicals and has been accelerating investigations in drug cases, as well as expediting the seizure and destruction of evidence and assets. The Prime Minister said the government will be reviewing its approach to treating drug users as patients, which should take into consideration the number of drugs owned by that person, while any government officials found involved will be immediately punished. The government now aims to improve drug users’ access to rehabilitation by actively screening patients and setting up more screening centers in every subdistrict. Local communities will have involvement in surveilling the behavior of community members. The government will be improving public services on mental health, by providing mental health support at schools and workplaces. The committee has ordered the establishment of emergency mental health centers in every district, with remote counseling available for people along with a community therapeutic approach. BANGKOK (NNT) - Security agencies in Thailand are now preparing security measures for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week (AELW), where leaders from Asia-Pacific economies will be convening in Thailand. The Royal Thai Armed Forces are ready to provide security when APEC leaders and delegates meet on 16-18 November. Chief of Defence Forces Gen Chalermpol Srisawat said the armed forces and the police have set up security protocols for leaders, which will become active once their planes enter Thailand’s skies. PHICHIT (NNT) - Minister Anucha Nakasai has taken part in the traditional Tak Bat Devo almsgiving ceremony in Phichit, encouraging the general public to help preserve and pass on local traditions. Prime Minister office’s minister Anucha presided over the opening of the traditional Tak Bat Devo ceremony at Wat Phra Phutthabat Khao Sai in Phichit. The event is considered one of the most important events observed in the province. The Tak Bat Devo ceremony is a special almsgiving ceremony observed at the end of Buddhist Lent in Thailand. Around 400 Buddhist monks from nearby districts were invited to receive alms at this ceremony, walking down from the mountain where a replica of Lord Buddha’s footprint is situated. This scene reenacts Buddhist mythology where Lord Buddha is said to have visited his mother in heaven and descended upon the earth at the end of Buddhist Lent. Mr. Anucha said he is honored to be witnessing the cooperation between villagers, schools, temples, local government agencies, and private firms to help preserve this traditional and religious heritage. He encouraged the general public to help preserve this beautiful celebration and pass it on to the younger generation. Tak Bat Devo events this year in several parts of the country received much attention from local people, following the relaxation of COVID-19 control measures. The National Office of Buddhism still recommends everyone wear a mask inside event venues to reduce the chances of transmission. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-10-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The Ubon Ratchathani Zoo has closed indefinitely, due to heavy flooding of surrounding and the main access to the zoo, but the animals there are not yet affected. Attapon Srihayrun, director of the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand, offered an assurance today (Thursday) that there are enough food supplies for the approximately 600 animals in the zoo for about a month. He said that a sandbag wall had been erected to protect the zone in which all the animals are kept and displayed to the public, which is still safe from flooding. The main access to the zoo and the tourist service area are, however, submerged, making it inconvenient and possibly unsafe for visits by tourists. PHOTO: PPTV Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Wednesday, October 12th, urged the public not to include marijuana legalization as a part of the government’s plan to eradicate the drug problems in Thailand. The Minister told reporters before attending a meeting to discuss urgent measures to solve the problem of drugs with the Prime Minister and Public Health officials that the related government agencies – including the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Medical Services, and the Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT), would cooperatively work to seek solutions and solve the issue of drug abuse in the local communities. When asked by reporters if there would be a review of the Cannabis and Hemp Act after the incident of the mass shooting in Nong Bua Lamphu, Anutin said that methamphetamine is a drug but marijuana is no longer a drug, so it was not the same thing anymore. Anutin held firm that he would not support any attempt to decriminalize cannabis as a narcotic drug, as suggested by some government opposition groups. Photo by VnExpress/Le Nga Dementia affects around 500,000 Vietnamese aged above 60, accounting for 5% of the population in the age group, while more young people have it too. At a Tuesday conference on preventing dementia and motor impairment among elderly people, Nguyen Trong Luu, deputy chairman of Vietnam Rehabilitation Association, said dementia results from brain damage, with memory decline as a signature sign. It is not a normal consequence of aging, but actually stems from numerous conditions and injuries that mainly affect the brain, he added. "Dementia can be seen in multiple conditions, the most common one being Alzheimer, which account for 60-80% of all patients," said Luu.
