"[It’s] because of the lack of opportunities in our country," Dr. Anthony Leachon, former adviser to the country’s pandemic task force, told Philstar.com over the phone earlier this month. AFP / Paolo Miranda MANILA, Philippines — To address the continuing exodus of Filipino nurses, a lawmaker has proposed the granting of full scholarships to qualified students in exchange for staying in the country after graduation. At the Senate Committee on Health and Demography's hearing Tuesday, Sen. Raffy Tulfo said that scholars could be required to serve in government hospitals for up to five years. Tulfo also asked representatives of the Department of Health to address reports of discrimination that Filipino nurses are facing in the workplace, including the selective grant of benefits such as hazard pay, saying he learned that only the nurses who were exposed to COVID-19 patients or were assigned to the COVID-19 wards were eligible for hazard pay. A bird's eye view of reclamation activity in Manila bay on June 10, 2022. AFP/Ted Aljibe MANILA, Philippines — A group of scientists called on the Senate to investigate various reclamation projects across the archipelago after Senator Cynthia Villar lashed out at the environment department over dump-and-fill projects in Manila Bay. Villar, who chairs the Senate committee on environment, natural resources, and climate change, fumed and cursed at officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources over reclamation projects. She said these would cause flooding in her home city of Las Piñas. Jerwin Baure, public information officer and resident marine scientist of AGHAM, urged Villar to not just look into reclamation projects in southern Manila Bay, but also in other areas in the country. Presidential Photo / Robinson Niñal Jr. MANILA, Philippines — Former President Rodrigo Duterte spent the entire P4.5 billion allocation for confidential and intelligence funds for his office in his last full year as chief executive, according to the Commission on Audit. Passengers from the cruise ship World Dream wear facemasks as they visit a theme park in Manila. The luxury ship with more than 700 passengers on board, mostly from China and Hong Kong, docked at the Port of Manila on Tuesday. AFP MANILA, Philippines (Updated 9:18 a.m.) — China denied Tuesday that the Philippines is on its tourism blacklist after Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri claimed that Beijing has restricted Chinese tourists from coming to Manila due to the continued operation of offshore gaming firms. “The report of 'tourist blacklist' is misinformation. China has not placed the Philippines on its blacklist for tourism,” the Chinese Embassy in Manila said in a statement. The categorical denial came hours after Zubiri claimed “that the Philippines now is part of a blacklist of tourist sites,” citing a conversation with Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian during their meeting at the Senate on Monday. The Pattaya police force took self-drug tests at the police station to, according to them, show their integrity in performing their duties, establish trust, and set a good example for citizens and tourists. The idea came from Police Chief Pol. Col. Kunlachart Kunlachai, but has also been a national focus after a tragic mass shooting last week in Nong Bua Lamphu. The chief had all police officers take a rapid drug test at the Pattaya police station to ensure that every officer, no matter if they were on duty or not, was clean from all types of drugs. Pol. Col. Kunlachart said: “Every officer must take a drug test to find if there are any illicit substances in their urine before starting duty.” Full Story: https://thepattayanews.com/2022/10/12/pattaya-police-force-go-through-drug-tests-to-according-to-them-set-a-good-example-for-citizens-and-tourists/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2022-10-12 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Despite messages on Thai and Foreign social media recently many folks were caught off guard when they visited Jomtien Beach today, October 12th, to find no sign that umbrellas, beach chairs, or vendors ever existed. This is part of a test by Pattaya mayor Poramese Ngampichet, who has pledged an environmental friendly day once a month where the beach is completely natural. This has happened regularly on Pattaya Beach and in areas like Hua Hin and Cha Am but not on Jomtien Beach since well before the pandemic. The reaction to the removal was polarizing and mixed, with many Thai readers saying it was wonderful and they supported it. English speaking readers were less positive, with many expressing concern for vendors or pointing out that the average age of beach visitors from foreigners were older who wanted the shade and services from beach vendors and were past the days of sitting on a beach towel in the sun. The National Water Command Centre (NWCC) has warned people living in Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces to brace for overflows from the Tha Chin River until Sunday. According to the NWCC, heavy rain over the Krasiao reservoir on Sunday and Monday has resulted in an increase of an estimated 318 million cubic metres of water, forcing officials to increase the volume of discharge through the dam into the Tha Chin River and Krasiao Creek to 130m3/sec. Compounded by high tides, expected until Sunday, the NWCC said that the level of the Tha Chin River will rise and may spill over its banks in several districts of the three provinces located along the river. BANGKOK (NNT) - The weather in the upper regions of Thailand is starting to change from the rainy season to winter, with lower temperatures and less rain now being observed. In a weather report, the Thai Meteorological Department says a moderate high-pressure system has moved southward over Thailand from China, causing a decrease in temperatures and strong winds. The northeastern region can expect a drop in temperature by 2-4 degrees Celsius. The North, the central plain, and the eastern region can expect a 1-3 degrees Celsius drop in temperature. Meanwhile, a monsoon trough prevailing over Thailand has been pushed southward, causing heavy rains in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon provinces. Stronger waves and winds are expected in the Gulf of Thailand from today. Sailors are warned to navigate with caution. The meteorological department is now closely monitoring the development of a low-pressure system east of Vietnam, which could potentially cause more precipitation in Thailand’s northeastern region. BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha prior to a Cabinet meeting expressed his gratitude towards Their Majesties the King and Queen for their support for the families of victims of an attack in Nong Bua Lamphu Province. A weekly Cabinet meeting at the government house started with a minute of silence observed by the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet. Gen Prayut asked related agencies to provide support and financial aid to the victims’ families, and called on all sides to step up their efforts on drug suppression and gun control. The government has set up a task force, chaired by the Prime Minister, to drive forward a national agenda on drug suppression. This task force will be convening in its first-ever meeting tomorrow. A roundtable seminar on the prevention and reduction of violence in Thai society was held today by the Senate’s Committee on Social Development and Children, Youth, Women, the Elderly, the Disabled, and the Underprivileged Affairs, in wake of the Nong Bua Lamphu attack. The seminar started with a minute of silence, followed by a reading of a mourning poem by Senator Naowarat Pongpaiboon. The tragic incident in Nong Bua Lamphu is the second mass murder that took place in a short span of time, after the 2020 mass shooting at a shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Senate will be pushing forward a bill introducing a content rating system for games, especially on violent content. Committee chairman Wallop Tangkananurak said this bill will be receiving support from the senate once it is submitted to the upper house.
