  1. It's not just a white guy thing. My wifes nephew is getting soaked by the brides parents. It is a real soap opera in the village. She has her hooks in real deep, he has already bought stuff that she demands of him. I feel sorry for him, the guy is hard working and doesn't drink, real good people. If my Thai was better I would tell him to run from this one.

  2. The Black Swan under Asoke BTS does a great Corned Beef Hash.

It took 8 posts before a proper answer came about.

Just be thankful it only took 8. I look at some of my old posts and still nothing. :)

  3. A side comment. I got extra pages in Bangkok on my old passport. I then noticed pretty much every immigration check after that they would spend time considering the extra pages somewhat suspiciously. For my new (US) passport I explicitly requested the large size passport (the larger is no extra charge and supposedly available on request). They sent me a normal passport.

The U.S. does not issue that big passport anymore. it was short lived.

  4. I have been ticketed several times over the years on my scoot. No complaints their rules their game. The only thing that does get to me is sitting there taking my medicine when a Sikh shoots right by and all he has on is his turban. Whats up with that?????? I'm just saying............

  5. I discovered my wife doing this a few years back. I kept hearing about this "business" she was doing. When I found out the details it was clearly a pyramid scheme. I gave it the name "monkey business" It took a little convincing but the name stuck and a few runners later she has been cured.

    I think :):D

  6. I normally pass through the airport at least twice a month and rarely buy anything, I just steal it :D

I was joking by the way, I do not steal anything, just in case anyone out there takes everything too seriously.

I will not even go into any of the shops in the airport now, let alone buy anything. It is mostly a rip off anyway, I have bought things tax paid in the U.S that are considerably cheaper than they are 'duty free' in swampy.

Thats the best idea yet. just walk past these shops, lets turn the shop area into a ghost town. Problem solved. :)

  7. Easy and only way. You and your wife have to go to the land department where they will give you a form to sign saying that you have no rights on the land. All the problems and doubts of those who posted here will be solved in a few minutes.

Ok, i've read through this thread and i'm still confused... so here is my scenario...

Recently Married, Brand new house is ready to be transferred into the Wife's name. Mortgage loan is approved in the wife's name and ready to sign (me as co-signatory). As i am the main bread winner in the family i'm going to be paying the mortgage.

We go down to the land office, and we will be required to sign the letter of confirmation thingie... my question is, does this cover only the land itself or the property as a whole?

Will the 'house' remain a marital asset (i.e. 'ours') and the land it sits apon be solely hers? This is how i read things, but i just need a sanity check as legal stuff can be a touch confusing sometimes.

If things go wrong and we end up divorcing (i dont plan for this to happen - but who knows the future, right?) will the value of the 'house' be part of the split or can i expect to walk away with nothing?

Just looking for a little clarity in the muddy waters of confusion here, thanks!

    STOP

Get a lawyer before you sign anything. A good lawyer will set up a usfruct so you can have access to the house if something goes wrong.

  8. Well neverdie is saying they do issue red plates on bikes if you pay finance ???

    So which is it ??

    Not in Bangkok.

I was wondering if you could relate your experience buying a bike here in BKK.

As for me I paid cash at a fairly large dealer. I got all the paperwork and in the process I had to pay an extra 100 Baht to insure I brought back the "red plate".

I had to wait 4 months to get the regular white plate and my 100 Baht . I did pass the color blind test when I got my D.L. so I know for sure it was a red plate.

    :)

  9. Honda nuovo elegance with the 136 LC engine..

More sturdy than any of the other autos..

Tho I would also say a honda wave if you could get used to the manual.

I think he should have said: Yamaha Nuovo Elegance, I bought one last month and it is a quick little machine. I did not think I was going to like the automatic but in BKK traffic you have a lot more things to think about than shifting. I shopped and read many articles here and I decided that the Yamaha was the one for me. Like the previous posts have said rent them all and make sure you buy from a big dealer.

  10. Hello :

I am back with another Question .

I would like to know if there is a certain rule or proper custom in asking your Thai Girl friend to marry you.

She has been married before and has a couple of Children.

Do you ask her parents ? Does she get a ring or gold jewlery?

Or can you just take her somewhere nice and propose like you would the Wetern way

You sir are on a slippery slope. Do not run wildly into the abyss. I have the cliche's out of the way now, oh wait I have one more its my favorite : What you spend in Thailand stays in Thailand.

Just be careful you seem to have just got off the boat so get all those questions answered and make sure you know her and the family. My rule of thumb was If I would support her brothers in the U.S. then I would in Thailand. Would I buy her parents a house in the U.S. then I would do the same in Thailand. I hope you see where I'm going with this. Take care and careful. Good luck :o
