That's based on your own decision if you can take the risk. All I say that I had made the experience that there is (most of the time) an option to do something else then overstaying. If they really lockdown every district and the situation gets worse, I don't think the will charge you for overstaying by then. Right now they try to come up with something that you don't have to do it. And yes it's not perfect. And it will get for me complicated too. I'm not happy with it. But to think that they will not come and catch you, maybe by accident. I would not take the risk to end up in that cell. Don't be panic.  Stay save.

The risk of catching the virus in the overcrowded immigration is definitely higher than being caught on overstay. And the consequences are incomparable too.

At the moment the Thai immigration did NOTHING positive to help us all in this situation. Will they ever do? I

    seriously doubt that.

If your plan is to spend a lot of time in Thailand, stop using those land based visa exempt entries except in an emergency. As it becomes harder and harder to enter Thailand in other ways, these land based entries become your insurance policy.

Incidentally, having been in Thailand as a tourist since September almost certainly means you will not get a tourist visa in Savannakhet, and might not in Vientiane (though you have a better chance there).

I have to agree with you but only in part. The immigration rules are changing so often that to consider smth. as an insurance policy is quite risky.

Anyway, following your advice i will try to apply for tourist visa this time. Thank you.

  3.  As I know one can use 2 exempt visas per year. My question: is it a calendar year or any 12 month period? I have 2 exempt visas already (September and November). Plan to visit Laos at the end of December. Should I wait till 1 of January and then get one more exempt Visa at the border or I will need to apply for a tourist visa this time? Thank you for your replies in advance.

Learn how to speak Thai as a farang?

My wife speaks perfect Thai. Many times there were abusive comments from lowlife Thais when we walked thru the walking street in Pattaya. My wife does not right away translate such things to me, just tells me about them much later, to prevent me from responding and escalating the situation. I have seen the bad side of Thais all the the time, should I now  learn Thai to understand every bad comment or insult?

It’s easier to change a wife

  5.  Ordering a specific whiskey is especially challenging in the Soi 6 bars these days. Not less than three girls are needed to somehow understand my request. It is not a question of knowledge, though. It is a way of solving problems which sucks. There is always a menu available which could be produced to the customer. But that is not an Isaan way. Ask, then ask again and again. Then call your friend (with the same level of erudition). Then a third friend gets involved and in most cases the problem gets sorted out at this point.

Like what would you suggest be done?

    & by whom?

The government. But I can understand why the ruling elite is not willing to change this and many other aspects of Isaan "culture". Let them drink alcohol, drive motorbikes, play lottery, have sex starting at the age 13 , engage in prostitution and other similar activities as much as they wish and they will not challenge the rulers any time soon. Guaranteed. Will they (Lao people of Isaan) ever be able to help themselves? Not in the near future.

If you can't or more accurately won't see the difference that's up to you. Let's ban motorcycles and make them illegal too, let's stop the manufacture all together.

Ridiculous, compare it to heroin ????

I would certainly ban it IN THAILAND for the young men under 25 y.o. My analogy with heroin is perfectly fine.

Sorry, but thats totally ridiculous comparison and not the same at all.

What is the difference? Driving 150-200 km/h with the brain fool of ethanol is really different from taking drugs? It is even worse since the drunk idiot is also risking other people’s lives.

  9. And regarding my ‘culture’ and views: when and if my young son will tell me that he is going to buy a big bike - I will do my best to discourage him. And when another brainless teen will smash his head on the big bus - I will show those pictures to my son as a proof why motorbike is a bad choice for him. And you guys, blaming me for not understanding the Thai way, you may do Exactly the opposite. You are so “open-minded” that you seem not to be able to tell cultural things from the right out stupidity.

    Just a thought.

Perhaps that guy, loved that bike, always dreamed of having one.

Died doing what he loved. They all knew it and you didn't.

All you saw was a motorcycle he died on.

Let’s imagine that he died from heroine overdose. And we all know how those addicts love heroine - more than their mothers and even their life. So what - let’s place some of the substance on his grave? Or maybe a photo of the guy in the state of happiness right after injection?

With this kind of statistics why nothing is done to change situation? From my example above it seems like many people in this society accept these accidents as a part of normal life.
