  1. Outlook is a very poor IMAP client however, it freezes anytime it is waiting for data.

I'll add that Outlook is a very poor client, maybe the worst one.

And yet Outlook Express works surprisingly well, it's as if they are pushing people to use MS Exchange servers .... Naaaa!!! They would never do that. :o

Here's an interesting look into how poor Outlook is for IMAP.... from an MS developer! He recommends people use Thunderbird instead, i love it.

  2. Naam -

How did you get around the point in windows XP install that asked for the drivers for the SATA drive.

Until the drivers were presented - and they HAD to be on a floppy - Windows install could not recognise the SATA drives, well not in the machine I set up in November. But it was an older machine.

You just need a slipstream installation CD, a windows CD that has SP2 "applied" to it before installation. nLite is great way to accomplish this.

If the required drivers were created after SP2 or are not included, you can integrate them as well.

  3. I use a Dlink wireless router with my True modem and it works just fine, no need to buy a new modem. I just had to use MAC cloning on the Wifi router so that the True modem thinks it's the pc that was attached previously.

  4. Found a great deal. For a short time you can get Web Root's Spy sweeper new version with a 1 year subscription free. Just downloaded and installed it and it works fine. Rated as one of the best anti spy ware programs. Get it before it's gone http://cybernetnews.com/2007/12/28/free-an...ot-spy-sweeper/

Since the subscription isn't activated until the user does so, i wonder what would prevent someone from obtaining multiple product keys and and using this product for years without paying...

Here's the direct link to the offer.

  5. We changed our maxnet DSL package from Indy/Home to Premier last week and now my husband can't access Thai Rath. If the front page loads (which it often doesn't) then clicking on a link in the page doesn't work. Get the "page cannot be displayed" message.

It is only Thai Rath that doesn't load, the other Thai language newspapers load with no problems.

Could be a coincidence, but seems unlikely. I've tried changing the DNS settings but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I can't access the site at TRUE Samut Parkarn, IE , Firefox and OPERA din't even show the first page. A ping is time out!

So, the server isn't online or blocked!

Not sure if this is the exact address you're trying, but i just checked http://www.thairath.co.th and it's working fine on True in Chiang Mai.

  6. my laptop has been infested by tiny ants... this happened to a previous laptop and it killed it... any idea how to get rid of them so i don't lose this one?

Personally, I would open the case, or have it done for you, and have them cleaned out asap. If they brought food in they might be more likely to stay. It's good to periodically have your laptop cleaned out anyway, all the dust tends to clog the fans and heatsinks and make the laptop run a little warmer.

I had this problem briefly before but they left on their own within 2 days so i didn't bother. The same type of little ants destroyed the tweeter cones on my friend's expensive speakers at his recording studio.

  7. "Blocked"? Yet another false alert...

    :o

Perhaps we could also start using the proper terminology on these multiple threads... It's misleading and with negative connotations that don't reflect reality.

I fully agree! Don't use the word "blocked" unless you see the typical screen telling you that its is blocked!

Youtube is working just fine (quite fast for once) but apparently 'Gimbo' has a technical problem with his ISP.

Apparently 'Gimbo' has tried pings and flushed the DNS to no avail. To clean the browser cache may also help, but I am not an expert and wonder why nobody here has come forward with some constructive advise for 'Gimbo'.

Gimbo, do a Google for TOT proxy servers and you will find a lot of info but most of it is in Thai.

    opalhort

Just for the record, I never saw a blocked page for YouTube back when it was fully blocked, it just failed to load. I had a maxnet connection at the time.

  8. My last trip through I was already feeling stressed because I was returning to see a sick family member. I had a 36 hour stopover in Taiwan and had instructed the ticket agents to send my checked bags to the US because i would not be needing them in taiwan. When i arrived in the US, i explained the situation with my luggage to a baggage handler and asked if they would be coming out with the other passengers' baggage or if they had arrived before. The handler said they would have arrived before and would be stored at the main terminal.

I tried to go through customs and they asked where my luggage was. I told them what the baggage handler told me and they asked who said that, of course when i turned around to point him out he wasn't around anymore. At this point they told me to go to the inspection line. I started to open my bag to let them have a look and some over-the-top b*tch yelled for me to shut the bag and not open it until i was told to do so. This is when the fun began. A few other agents gathered around and started asking, very rudely and aggressively, why i was in thailand, what do i do, etc. They started going through my stuff and telling me to 'keep my hands where they can see them'. I started to feel sick and need to use the restroom, and of course they had to come along for the ride and watch me take a crap just in case i was carrying drugs.

When i got out they had my laptop open and running and demanded the password, as well as the passwords for my encrypted drives. They started doing a system search for jpg and other image files. They found a rather dodgy looking photo of a young girl next to a swimming pool that I hadn't seen before at which point I got rather nervous. I knew I didn't put anything illegal on my pc, but once you've seen one image that you don't recognize you start to wonder what else is on your pc and how did it get there.

I was asked if i had been arrested before and lead away to get my bags which evidently were with the rest of the other passengers bags. Two customs agents stood on either side of me insulting me loudly and asking me 'what's really going on??' and saying 'you don't even have any luggage do you??'. I just ignored them and stared straight ahead trying to come to terms with what was going on. My bags eventually came and I was lead back to my laptop and other carry on luggage. I asked the agent inspecting my laptop where he found that image and he told me it wasn't a problem, it was just a thumbnail from the adobe stock image site. (Do a search for 'artistic' with the adobe stock art app and you may be able to find it as well)

Eventually they were satisfied that I wasn't bringing anything illicit into the country and I was allowed to repack everything up and leave. It was a stressful experience and I dread having to deal with these people again.

  9. HI! Just bought a new 500 GB HDD, but only shows up as 465 GB. Is there a way of maximizing the space? 35 GB lost is still quite a lot of space. After formatting the HDD, are there any files which can be deleted?

    Cheers!

There's no lost space, it comes down to two definitions of gigabyte. Sometimes it is considered to be 10243 and sometimes it is considered to be 10003. This page HERE explains why the size reported by the OS is not the same as the box.

  10. yeh the eeepc is cute, but sadly doesnt have what i need. the os is linux too and its a flash drive. Need something a bit more substantial. Ty for the suggestion, however, tigerbeer.

Firefoxx, you have any suggestions per chance? Or anyone else??

I was shopping for UMPCs lately as well... The two that interested me the most were the Fujitsu u810 and the Sony UX series. I'm generally anti-Sony because of their pricing and overuse of proprietary components but it's really the only small computer with a "real" processor (Core Solo and Core 2 Solo for the latest). The Fujitsu uses the same A110 processor as the Samsung. I don't like the keyobard on the sony however, try one out and you'll see why. The fujitsu offers a much better keyboard. OTOH, if you're considering the Samsung then I guess that's not too important.

If you don't need a lot of processing power, the fujitsu could be a great machine and they are reasonably priced, Fujitsu routinely has them on sale for $900 USD. I'm not sure about availabilty in Thailand. Sony's are more expensive, but I've seen models with Core Solo 1.33 GHz processor going for around $1300. The latest version that uses the Core 2 solo is stupidly priced, nearly $1000 more than the previous generation. Even the Core Solo would absolutely run circles around the A110 processor though.

I checked out the EEE, but it didn't win me over at all. The price is great but the screen is washed out and low resolution. Interesting but not for me.

For either I would uses XP tablet edition to get the most out of the machines.

  11. ...I agree, if they have this touch screen technology working so well on a phone... its just a matter of time before they implement it in a big way on home computers.... but the one thing you have to wonder about is how do they implement it with convenience of use in mind? It takes alot of work to raise your arms and manipulate a screen like a monitor! haha, they will have to find a way to make it so you manipulate something down in front of you so your arms don't get tired.......

I think this video might be appropriate for this thread... enjoy :o

  12. 1) Yes, you can get cases like this or this.

    2) Windows server can do it without any additional software, but XP would require some sort of third party solution and I haven't used them, only hardware. But....

    3) You probably don't want a full time mirror like RAID provides. There are some consequences of RAID to consider. Every action is mirrored instantly, including mistakes and malware caused problems. If you accidently delete a folder of important data and realize after it's too late to recover, then you've also done the same on the mirrored drive. The same goes for something caused by viruses, etc. Personally, I would opt for a powerful folder sync app like Super Flexible File Synchronizer. I've worked with a few different folder sync apps and it is my favorite by far.

If your laptop has an express card slot, you might consider an external case that offers an eSATA connection. You can get a SATA card and have an extremely fast connection to your drives, much better than USB or Firewire.

    Good luck!

  13. I'd love to own these and other machines now, just need the room and.. err.. the lottery win...

Just buy one cabinet and make it look classy, then add decent PC guts and emuator software... Might be tricky coming up with a control layout that worked for most games, but it could be very nice. You can also buy all the controls online if you wanted to have someone build a custom cabinet.

  14. USB sticks stick out so not really an elegant option.

I've seen fast, high-capacity USB Flash drives intended for readyBoost in CM with right-angle plugs. The drives are flush against the case when plugged in (and likely covering the neighboring ports :o ). Not as slick as using a card reader slot, but another option to consider. I've just tried to find them online with no luck. If you're interested I can find the maker next time I'm in computer plaza.

  15. "...As a developer, I'd prefer to not have to write the same site multiple times for different browsers," according to Hachamovitch's post. "Standards are a (critical!) means to this end, and we focus on the standards that will help actual, real-world interoperability the most...

:o Ha! This is from MS??? Take a look at the code for any CMS, eCommerce package, etc. and count the number of times you see the terms "IE Fix" or "IE Bugfix", "IE workaround", etc.

  16. I was looking around for portable video players recently and came across these two devices: GP2X and JXD 301. Both seem to have their good points and bad points.

The screen on the JXD sounds fantastic, and I've seen it going for about $130 USD for the 4GB onboard version. Add another 4GB SD card and you'd have a decent amount of music, videos & games combined with high quality screen.

  17. Works fine on my True connection.

Perhaps I have been especially singled out for this:

The standard warning that the site has been blocked for innappropriate material or rudeness to the royal family. Must be those naughty ads. :o

  18. Reimar, can you please link to the page offering the download instead of a direct link to the file itself? I think most users feel more comfortable if they can read the accompanying information.

    Thanks for the update!

EDIT: This appears to be the release notes: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...77c953a761.aspx

Like Tywais said, you're linking to a japanese version. There does seem to be a file "windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe" floating around as well.
