  1. I agree with the OP. The interviewer was agressive and rude. Generally when a leader of a country gives you an interview the best you should do is be polite, even if you do ask tough questions!

The Dalai Lama is not the leader of Tibet is he??? He is the spiritual head of the Buddhist machine!!! even in Tibet politics should be left to politicians, not figureheads, he just found himself in a position where he had to comment as there was no one else to do it for them.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the Tibetan government as it was pre-1959? I hope there was some sort of elected government and not just the Potala Palace!! After spending 2 months in Khampa, and Amdo, I have little regard for monks anymore, they really do just behave like medieval monks in Europe, living off the hard work of others and getting fat... not like Thailand where they seem integral to the community.

Actually I could have swore I met him a few weeks back in Ganzi, Sichuan, the Dalai lama, at the blessing of the new super stupa there. Spitting image of the guy, even sounded like him, but I guess there must be lots of Lama's that look and sound like him.

  2. Hi

At Jatujak every week I see this woman wrapping up bits of things..... coconut, caramel paste??? shrimp, shallots etc up in a green leaf. What are they called? And how do you eat them?? Leaf and all right?? Want to try them like so many things, but not sure how to even.... I think they also sell a DIY version, does anyone know how to do it??

    Thanks

  3. hopefully coming down tomorrow, staying at Sun Hill Hotel, Patong Beach I think, as recommended on another thread, so I'll start there and work my way out, all sounds too good to be true after looking at what you can get for 10,000Bt per month in Bangkok, all I need is a good airport link and Air Asia and I'll be happy.

    :o

  4. I'v had my 80-200 f2.8 VR for a few months now, and you just don't realise how good VR is until you try it, and whats worse get used to it. I'm constantly having to remind myself that I can't get away things such as slow shutter speeds on my other lenses. I would love the 105mm VR Macro, but have been told it doesn't use VR at close range... bizarre really.

  5. I've been back here for 3 months now and have lost everything I put on whilst in the UK for a year, about 12lbs or 5Kg? I try to eat thai everyday and have no problems with Thai portions, the heat as has been mentioned, seems to quell my appetite quite a bit. Unfortunately it has the reverse of effect on my beer brain. All i need is for someone to invent no-cal booze....

  6. I am living in Kathu, it's 5 minutes to Central, Tesco, BigC or Makro, but in a very quiet and green area:

    Please have a look:My house

2bedrooms, livingroom, kitchen, air, ADSL line, UBC(1500.-Baht a month), hot water and a nice landlord plus a huge garden: 10000.-Baht a month.

Next to me is another house nearly the same but only 1 bedroom, they just moved out and I don't know if they have someone for this house(same landlord).

Just come down and drive around with a small bike to look in the small sois or ask one of the locals to find a place.

    Good luck!

    Gerd

almost speechless..... that is one hel_l of a place you have there..... cheers!!

  7. My understanding is, as Sabaijai mentioned somewhere along the line, there is no permanent thing called a soul, it exists only from moment to moment , so how can there possibly be any rebirth.

It is all an illusion. If you believe in Rebirth then will you be reborn? you don't really know do you!!

the trick is not to believe in it and let go. IMHO

  8. I think post #2 worries me alot more than the coup did.. Seems I've woken up in China.

Sad that this will have an affect on the usual quality debates.

I think the idea is to quell any possible reprisals from Pro-Thaksin groups gaining momentum, which seems like a very reasonable state of affairs for the meantime. The last thing the country needs is more division.

  9. Tried using search today to no avail, I need a bit of help possible relocation to Phuket from Bangkok, what are the realistic rental costs for 1 bed and or 2 bed apartments, and which areas would you recommend I start with? I like a bit of nightlife, but I also like a bit of greenery.

Is it possible to walk everywhere in Phuket or would I need a bike??? Hate bikes but what are my options? I guess everything else will fall into place.

    Cheers

  10. I cannot seem to do any searches today whatsoever, either in search or at the bottom of individual forums... "error: your search includes words of less than 20 characters" or something like, but it definitely said 20 characters. Personally I can't think of any words with 20 characters... can you??

  11. If he's not single ... then yes she's bad. <He's worse> She should walk away until he's free.

Why do people do this to themselves? Do you really think that someone who is going to cheat on his wife and their 1 year old kid, is the kind of person you would want your friend involved with?? If you get someone that way, you have no reason to believe the very same thing wouldn't happen to you? This guy is a weak dick... he has no morals whatsoever... and your friend is crazy to get involved.

the world is a big place, I'm sure there will be someone somewhere!!!

    I hope she knows that

  12. wow...

just got back from six weeks in Western China and I come back to this...

I've just read everything here and I've got to say I'm no wiser to what the heck is going on.

Why is it better to count days rather than stamps if you are actually wanting to live here ??

What happens to the legality of all those who have signed 6 month or more leases on apartments they now can't stay in for more than 90 days?

    anyone??

  13. Listen to SBK... she knows man!! she knows.....

Seriously if you want to do the whole full moon thing, get there a few days before and enjoy the warm up, but do stay on Phangan, you would have to be stupid to risk one of the nightime speed boats between Samui and Haad Rin.

I would recommend staying a little away from Haad rin itself unless you really like the hustle and bustle 24/7 as full moon comes and goes. The absolute best place to stay is somewhere called "Blue Lily" or something...( ha ha ha! ) it has a great location, great mexican, english and thai food, and a truly great hostess...!!!

She knows who she is.... but soooo modest...

Have a good time!!! and if you stay at there say hi to Tigger and Sheba and the gang!!!

You'll know what I mean later

  14. I'm glad to read all the replies that are not just "name calling", and I am resolute that I will visit Myanmar. It is my choice after all. I do not believe in the kind of boycotts advocated by some here, because I believe forces such as the military junta in Myanmar, are best not left to their own devices and the more tourists there are, then the juntas cannot operate openly in those areas. Is that not progress of a kind? Of course there are those closed off areas where we are not allowed to go and yes for sure the Junta will be operating at full strength there, the same as they were in areas that once closed are now open to tourism. So I believe the more pressure there is to open all areas to tourism, the less likely the junta will be able to cover up their violations. Is this not a reasonable view??

Also I hope that the people here opposed to tourism are appalled more by the treatment of indigenous Shan and Karen peoples than they are about the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi. Her treatment is nothing compared to that given to hundreds of other political activists throughout the world by various regimes, so lets put that into its proper perspective.

As for the possibilty that I might sell images of Myanmar, I'm not the first funnily enough, there are over 8000 images of Myanmar on Alamy alone all being offered for sale to anyone who wants them. I am still committed but.... I will go there first with an open mind, and I will talk to ordinary people, and if the consensus is that they want tourism, then frankly "up yours" to all you armchair activists. If they tell me otherwise and support the ban proposed by Aung San Suu Kyi, the I would reconsider.
