1 hour ago, NanLaew said:So you don't figure that many are "genuinely stuck"? When was it "obvious that the borders were going to be closed at some point"?
In Q1, I was working offshore Africa and then took a short UK vacation upon my demobilization. In early March, there was no evidence of any countries completely closing their borders, only limitations on, or scrutiny of flights and pax originating from China. I made it back into Thailand on 6 March but within 9 days (5 consular working days), Vietnam stopped issuing visas UNANNOUNCED and then closed their borders. Around 19 March, Thai embassies and consulates stopped issuing visas unless one had a Covid-19 health certificate UNANNOUNCED. They started closing borders around 23 March UNANNOUNCED and then zipped it all up when they called the SoE on 25 March UNANNOUNCED. In layman's terms, the stuff hit the fan in March and not a whole lot of warnings were issued by anyone.
The guys that took over offshore Africa included some guys from Thailand and they have become "genuinely stuck" on the vessel after it transited to work in the North Sea. Of course they were worried but they had work to do and food needed putting on the table. BTW, you can't just say "I want to go home now" and flag down a passing helicopter.
Right now, there's an estimated 450,000 mariners who are "genuinely stuck" on boats and ships all around the world because of border closures, quarantine regulations and lack of flights. In my particular industry, there's probably several hundred guys that have completed their assignments, have disembarked and are now holed up in a hotel in a country that may not have consular services for their home or chosen destination and have no easy flight options either.
Yes, stuck on a rig and have been for 116 days
No word yet on the borders opening for flights either way in or out at the moment
Hopefully a repatriation to the UK and then get back to Thailand under my marriage, pretty f%$#ing bleak
As you say some of us had no option to just get on a plane and go home to our families......

Any updates or news about married persons being able to return to Thailand in the near future? did read that there is a possibility that this particular group may be up for some kind of travel sooner than tourists.......

Leave them to it, they seem to thrive on inefficiency here.....

You sound like a wild man....!!We call them paprika's and thailand sure has them, we bought them this week....so i don't understand why pizzacompany can't buy them.
I think i'm also going to find another pizza dealer, although i like pizzacompany...when i called their serviceline for complaints the first guy just hang up on me, the second stopped speaking at all (both were bad in english) and i'm done with it unless they give me free pizza''s to make it good. Also that 400 baht membership i don't need it anymore.

Wow... catch up will ya...AGAIN?
I'm just sat here pondering the accuracy of your internal alcohol gauge that justifies saying that the police unit was in fact so out of whack
Of course you may have had a fully calibrated unit of your own unbeknown to us that you took a reference from at the time, you however did not mention this so we will discount it for now
Or, and this is plausible, you were in fact over the limit as they said (did you see the readout display?)
If you in fact saw the display and it was under the legal limit then I stand to be corrected and hope the vile creatures that caused you to forego said money and cause you such terrible angst are swiftly dealt with and learn the error of their ways by a higher power
Did you see the display? Surely you did as it is the first thing most would want to see to corrorobate the penalty about to be dished out
What was the display? If indeed it was a 7 and you are sure that the unit was incorrect there should be a full inquiry to be held in my opinion (I could knock up some placards for a walkby of the said station, if you can lend me a few quid)
We should back this fully and show a united front that as foreigners we are more than cash cows and should be treated equally as human beings, regardless of creed and colour
Or just take a <deleted> taxi......

Zero drinks, shakedown
I think the "shake down" is he disputes the amount of alcohol in his system being as high as the Police claim.
Drinks, up to you
We all know the risks and not just here so why bother and then try to argue the fact
It is a non news stupid thread.....

Yes enough money for the visa, they do not ask for any other financial recordsBy 'enough money' do you mean the lump sum of 500k Thai Baht for the 5year Elite visa?
As another member quoted you can't really expect immigration to let somebody that spends so much time in place to be repetitively admitted as a tourist
Paperwork is being scrutinised more now, all immigration is requesting is that you get the correct application of visa for your stay
Or the closest to it.......

Application to acceptance was 5 weeks if I remember correctly, possibly 6 (British passport)Thanks for the input, how long did it take in your instance, from application to the actual visa in your passport?Got the visa on re-entry back from abroad which took less than 15 minutes
On the whole very happy so far. If I was eligible for retirement then possibly a different option but I'm not so this covers my needs
Had two marriage visas and with the timing, headaches and paperwork just knocked them on the head
To be fair when this expires I may consider the 1M 20 year but thats a ways away yet.....

Good service
Now running at about 7000 members so they say, they want more but need to expand their staff to keep up with daily service demands
No complaints from me so far.....

As you said earlier, it is until it isn't
Get a freaking job, is my advice. Or if you have money, chose one of the various Investment routes or marry your gf.
What advice would you give a guy from Nigera that wants to life in the USA???
Go there and work as an illegal non-tax paying teacher?
The entitlement is strong here.
Much the same way of thinking.......

No, I don't understand your post because it's 100% wrong. If you don't understand how the TM30 report works, don't complain about it.
If you don't understand something then how do you know if it is wrong
My understanding of the TM30 is crystal clear, my point being that many "ordinary tourists" read and hear about such regulations and then.... ohhh whats the point
Have a pleasant day....

I asked you about a common tourist visiting Thailand. A tourist never ever have to worry about the TM30 report. NEVER EVER. They don't have to submit a TM30 anywhere in Thailand. They are not responsible, and never will be. Expats/long stayers, yes.
So before you're complaining next time, check the facts first.
You clearly understood my posts a clearly as I understand where my complaints were......

I'll use the TM30 as one example due to the complications arising from it's applicationWhat hurdles do they place in the way of common tourists visiting Thailand? Please, mention one.
The complete lack of understanding of how it works, who is to apply it, where it is to be done and when it needs to be done
There is information available but a lot of "common tourists" will not be too interested in spending time researching the finer points and details for what should be an enjoyable holiday experience
Rightly or wrongly people read and hear about these rules and regulations and move onto the next page of the web. There they can go to another offer without hindrance before they spend any more time trying to get the full facts, mainly in part because the information out there is so innacurate and confusing people cannot be bothered to waste their time.....

Back on topic, I agree with another poster that the tourism has a major impact on the retirees anyhow
Would you retire to a country that you had never spent a substantial amount of time in to get to know?
The more hurdles they place in the way of tourists the less tourists will come
The more unwelcome you make tourists feel they will not return
The stronger the baht becomes the less tourists will come
Without tourists you have no future retirees......

Whats the difference between a tourist visa and a retirement visa in Thailand as far as regulations that could be changed at any future point?Until it isn't anymore and too many people come, aka the chinese.
I don't get it into my head how someone can expatriate on a touri visa, it's just waiting for trouble to happen, might be ok as young backpacker but not for someone with a serious life.
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
The only difference in a practical aspect is the terminology surely. They can all be revoked, altered or modified in any number of ways that may not suit the future applicant or current holder
Probably the only way to avoid all the challenges would be to become a resident.....

SemanticsIt's not misleading. My visa is officially based on retirement, and the financial requirements have been the same for many years, with a few changes this year. You and other "tourists" can go on with your border hopping and continuously whining about Immigration and changes.
You and everybody else who is here on a visa of any kind is not settled in the sense that you have any rights to stay here
I think the other poster is trying to establish that you are not a resident, so not exactly a fixture of Thailand
In that sense everybody on any visa is purely a guest (tourist) as it can be revoked
Maybe I have misinterpreted the gist of it......

Free for you if you're not the one payingThere are no free health care. Somebody is still paying for it unless you're a poor person unable to earn a decent western income (then you pay tax) even after wining the lottery of being born in a Western country.
There are many thousands in the UK for example that have never had a job or paid any of their own money into the system but still get access to "free" healthcare, housing and benefits
So everything is free to them......

SURVEY: High end tourists—good idea or a flop?
in Thailand News
Posted
Thailand seems to be trying to run as fast as it can into being taken over by the Chinese in may sectors, who will gladly oblige
As commented, they dont have the infrastructure/service/culture to be a high end destination. They could earmark a particular location and revamp it for lesser numbers and control the market and growth
That in my mind is the only way they could achieve this dream of theirs, as a whole country wide it is not an attractive option for the better heeled of society IMO.....
