  1. It's also a fact that in the rankings Thailand is pretty corrupt compared to most other countries, particularly the not very corrupt ones.
  2. Nah, there's way more corruption in Thailand. Just check out the world corruption index. https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2021?gclid=CjwKCAjw3qGYBhBSEiwAcnTRLrQRTHv-UcUv2dSFZ06CjTn_pPPQNKF2vf7CzGqa2R9K6ROhzg53nxoCmOkQAvD_BwE
  3. Too many people ignore this and pretend that corruption happens only in Police and other government agencies, while the rest of the population are honest and hard working victims of corruption. The truth is, you aren't going to end corruption if you cannot admit that it permeates all levels of Thai society and all of Thailand needs to work to change it.
  4. So if a tree smiles in a wood, but no one is there to perceive that smile as meaning the tree is hot for them, does it make a sound?
  5. Thais smile for many reasons. They even have different names for the different types of smile. If you think that a "real" smile is defined as involuntary and a sign of being happy or pleased to see someone, then yes, a lot of Thai smiles will be fake.
  6. So if someone smiles a genuine smile of being pleased to see someone, but that someone believes that the smile means the smiler is hot for them, it renders the smile fake, but only in the mind of the smile beholder? The smile would still objectively be a genuine smile though, right?
  7. One way the government could help would be to have decent education to help Thai people manage their finances and be less vulnerable to predatory lenders.
  8. I thought the same thing. Maybe the old Thai "don't get involved in anyone else's business" meant that a woman's screams coming from a house were quite normal and generally ignored. It might be more likely that the bathroom didn't have a window, as they explained that she was deep inside the house. A bit weird but it does happen.
  9. it must surely have been a bathroom without a window also, which seems a little silly.
  10. It's called "negging". You look into her mouth with an expression of "What the <deleted> is that thing? Ew!" Then you maybe waft the air a little like her breath smells. This makes her feel insecure, so when she stops talking you say "It's really clever of you to figure that out all by yourself." Because of the negging, this complement will make her want you.
  11. No projection, just cold hard accurate observation. I know how this user responds and what I have said is in no way speculation. I've clearly pointed out and explained what I am talking about. If you don't understand, I'm not sure I can make it much clearer.
  12. That guys a complete fruit cake. Clearly racists against non-Thais, particularly Whites. I think he's British but non-White. Anything negative about Thailand or Thai people and the toys go straight out of the pram. "This happens in Western countries as well!" "You're racist, that's why you're saying this!" "Why is this news being shared?!!" You name it, he'll try and use it to defend Thailand from any criticism or negativity, no matter how true or mundane. He even defended and justified a foreigner being attacked for not buying a Thai a beer. I'm genuinely surprised that he can effectively say "I don't like racists" while clearly being extremely racist.
  13. When is it going to be after covid though? When are they due back?
  14. They killed the golden goose and now they're just standing over the corpse wondering why the golden eggs have stopped appearing. Thailand got way too used to the extra tourist money; allowing skimming off the top and keeping people happy through subsidisation. Once covid hit, they really needed to realise what is happening and change their tactics. Seemingly overnight, the money they skimmed was suddenly most of the money and the subsidies dried up. If tourism got back to pre-covid levels overnight, then maybe things would be OK. But that isn't happening.
  15. A million baht and hopefully more to come. I just hope she has enough people around her looking out for her that it doesn't get stolen. Should be enough to get through uni, get herself a decent job, and change her and her Grandfather's life in the short-term as well.
  16. Are there any real monks in Thailand? Fags, booze, drugs, smartphones, none of this is compatible with Monkhood.
  17. Thai people definitely have an issue around expressing emotions. They appear completely fearless when it comes to things like singing or dancing, but other things, that would seem everyday for us, terrify them. Also, there's the "relationships are more like a business agreement than about love and feelings" angle. They're probably griping about exes because they made them lose face or they are resentful, therefore no real shame in complaining.
  18. Why do you need to change the circumstances so drastically? Surely "Would people donate as much if everything was the same except for the gender?" would be a more honest question?
  19. What a great bunch of foreigners, doing something so incredibly kind and helpful for this needy Thai person. ????????
  20. You like to ignore any reality where you are wrong? At least your consistent in your cognitive dissonance.
  21. I'll echo what another user said, I think the most likely explanation is that they wanted to encourage others to donate. Possibly they want to feel like they are "part of something". I'm aware that there are no real selfless acts, as everything people do is motivated by "feeling good", but even if it was the case that the users posted their donations to show off, who really cares if it means a load of free money to a worthy cause? Do you think she would return the money if she found out that some foreigners on an online forum were "boasting" about their donations?
  22. Was that observation correct? No. It was quite different from what was actually "said". It's interesting to think about why your observation was so far from the truth, isn't it?
