  1. I can't log in to msn messenger on my acer aspire one which runs linux lite.

It runs google talk ok though.

I have clicked the live update button and downloaded all the patched already

    What else can I do?

Also is there a site where I can download Thai fonts for linux lite?

  2. I've just bought the acer aspire one. 8Gb version with linux linpus lite pre-installed. The keyboard has Thai script as well as English on the surface of the keys. On the language settings there are many languages but No Thai and No Korean. How do I install them?

  3. I am interested in the Acer A-One microcomputer running linux on the 8GB model. I want to experiment with Linux instead of XP. I have heard it runs really slow running XP but ok on linux lite.

Where can I get an Eng-Thai , Thai-Eng dictionary for it. It can be paid or free. I don't mind.

Also what antivirus program do you recommend for the 8GB model? I don't want to slow it down too much as I know the processor is designed to do pnly basic tasls. Also can U use 4Gb sd card to make it 12GB instead of 8? I want to put some songs on it

    Thanks

  4. I am using Nod32 on my laptop (running XP) and it has detected a 'SymbOS/CommWarrior.C. ' virus. After a google search it says that it affects mainly symbian phones. I am not sure if that means it will do any damage to my laptop.

My Nod32 software detects it but does not come up with the option of deleting of quarantining it! It just has the option 'leave'

What can I do to delete it?

  5. I am going to leave Thailand soon. I have a lot of printed materials which I do not wish to carry as they are too heavy.

Is there any software out there (free or paid) which I can use to scan documents and then save them as a single pdf file?

I have approximately 500 worksheets which I want to make into 1 pdf book instead of 500 individual pdf files.

  6. I have a dopod c720 smartphone (aka T-mobile dash).

I will be moving to Korea soon and have been told that my smartphone won't work there as they use CDMA (not sure what that even is!)

Anyway, can I buy CDMA phones in LOS? I want something with a qwerty keyboard for easy typing.

  7. Where can I buy a keyboard with Korean fonts? Are the expensive? I could do with a keyboard for both my pc and my laptop.

Failing that I can always settle for korean stickers which I can stick on my keyboard once I have installed the fonts onto my PC.

I will be in bangkok for the next 3 days

    Thanks

  8. Download the Java browser offered at http://mini.opera.com - best browser for Blackberries at the moment.

As for e-mail, you can configure any POP3 e-mail account, I reckon...Gmail, for example, should work just fine.

    Thanks

I installed opera mini and configured it to work with my sim by setting up the APN and username for AIS etc.

I can now check email (manually) The internet works fine

    Thanks

  9. I got myself a blackberry 8700v from ebay. I got it fairly cheap as it did not come with the software disks but came with the chager and sync cable. I also got it unlocked so I can make calls on it in Thailand. The only thing that worries me is that it didnt come with a browser. Do I need to get connected to blackberry ny going to a blackberry shop in order to get the browser? I am in Chiang Rai by the way. Also If I dont connect to blackberry and decide to use it as just a phone with my AIS sim card, can I just use it to check email manually ie without having mail pushed to my phone?

I guess the first logical step is to get a browser on it . Any ideas on how to do that?

  10. Hi

I am an English teacher working in Northern Thailand. I have am 32 and have 10 years esl teaching experience in Thailand. I am looking for a change and am interested in working in Seoul, Korea. I was wondering if agents ever come to Bangkok to conduct interviews. I would very much like to see someone face to face without having to fly back to my country to have an interview.

    Thanks

  11. I have noticed that bluetooth receivers are getting cheaper. I saw the holux M-1000B selling for 2790 baht in chiang mai. I was interested in getting one for my dopod c720w windows mobile smartphone (aka T-mobile dash) but the seller told me that the software (Smart2go) does not support smartphones.

Where can I get software for my dopod c720w smartphone which has Thai maps?

  12. sorry for being cynical, the locals probably washed the poor dog down with copious amounts of chang and lao kao, and went to bed on a full stomach.

i think you answered your own question, but i would love to be proved wrong.

Ouch! I Hope that never happens to anyone's dog.

I agree that posters around the town would be the best solution to locating the dog. Good luck finding him/her

  13. Just a dumb question, where do you get laptop insurance from? What does it cost (roughly)?

The shop which sold me the laptop told me that I could extend it to 3 years (by adding 2 years to the existing 1 year) if I paid them 4000 baht.

After talking to several people, they told me I'd be better off taking it to Panthip for repairs if it broke. Said it would be cheaper than sending it to Compaq. My laptop costed me only 21,300 baht so adding 4000 baht would mean adding 20% to the cost. My friend said that laptops generally last 1-3 years anyway and if that is the case, just buy another one as they are not that expensive these days.

  14. Could you please give us more infos?

Are all drivers installed? Special the Network Drivers if you connect the Modem/Router with Network cable.

What settings you use in the Modem/Router and NIC?

    Which ISP?

    Cheers.

Sorry! turns out I could connect to the internet for all sites except for hotmail! Works ok now

    Thanks

  15. I bought a compaq laptop 7 months ago. The laptop came with a 1 yr warranty. Does that warrantee also cover the battery?

I find my battery diminishing in storage capacity rapidly. It used to hold a charge for 1.5 hours. Now for less than an hour.

What criteria would be used to decide if I would be entitled to a new batt anyway?

  16. Bit defender shows that I my PC has been infected with Backdoor.sdbot.AAD. I am using XP with SP2

the message which comes up is as follows:

    identified viruses 1

    infected objects 1

    C\:Windows\Config.exe disinfection failed

    C\:Windows\Config.exe moved

I dont know why it wont disinfect or even delete. There is no option to delete

How can I get rid of it?

is it detrimental to my PC?

  17. First off, I am not a teacher. My wife is. I read much about the problems of teaching english to Thai students. I hear how bad the teachers and or their methods are here in Thailand. My wife is doing research on the problems of students, teachers, methods, etc. She ask me tonight, what do the farang teachers here think? What do they recommend should be done to help the students learn better? To be more motivated, etc. She ask me many other questions. Since I don't know, I am posting here asking for any and all information, recommendations, opinions, suggestions, etc.

Thai students need teachers who care about their education. A caring attitude all the way from the administrator level, down to the regular school teacher. Administrators often give priority to meetings, camps, trips and cancel classes as a result, with students losing valuable class time. A caring administrator will ensure that quality teachers are hired who have the same vision i.e to improve education in the local community. It's a shame when I see quality Thai & farang teachers not using their potential to help the students. I think when the people in a position to help the students care, everything else falls into place. Even a highly motivated caring teacher with a limited command of English would try to improve their own English skills so that they could help their students.
