Well ask them to shut the door properly.   LOL

Last month I was near the front of an Emirates 380 and saw one of the stewards bring up a screen which showed the temperatures of the various zones in the passenger cabins. And he knocked one of them up a couple of degrees. So it can be done.

Try travelling Laos Air, you get a shower in the front rows from the condensation.

some air con machine in buildings or cinemas can't be turned down precisely, they might have a 2-3 air con unit for the space, and they could turn multiple of them off, or all off, if the cinema is quite empty of people it could be quite cold even with just one compressor running, but turning the air con off completely would be too hot and humid

Have you never heard of thermostats?

I love the a/c here. I think more frail people tend to be cold a lot. Even in airplanes you see it. Some people wear thick jackets sometimes, it’s ridiculous! Swampy is NEVER cold. The arrival hall always has people in shorts sweating.

You need to get outdoors more and acclimatise.

There's certainly nothing frail about me, 5' 11" and 105kgs.

A/c is fine at sensible temperatures in suitable situations, but 30* outside to 12* inside is what's ridiculous..... Fans are far more healthy where appropriate.

I never mentioned Swampy, it was Don Muangs airside gates, and it was positively bl..dy freezing!

Your swampy anecdote proves my point, they have not got the first idea about how to set or control temperatures at sensible / comfortable operating levels.

Sounds like his lawyer just found another way to scam more money in lawyer fees out of poor ol' Vern.

I doubt very much that poor Vern will be paying any lawyer fees. I imagine it will be a no win no fee basis, hence the stupidly high damages sum claimed, and the pursuit of a new hearing.

That is unless Vern has more money than sense.....

great bike but seems to have many problems with a sensor ( many stories in France, recall but take longtime to import from japan and you can t start the bike)

also i find this in english https://advrider.com/f/threads/2017-honda-x-adv.1174189/page-72

i like the bike, price is a bit expensive because the exchange rate is not great.... but similar to Europe 12.000 euros

i think the better choice is a CB500X in thailand, today i ride a 250 RALLY and i will go to the BKK motorshow for to see new models ?

in Europe i love the new T7 yamaha

When I see the next motorcycle show in Bangkok?

The major three downsides I see:

    1. Overpriced

    2. Overweight

    3. Steering feels wrong to me, not properly balanced. Slow speed it falls into the corner and you have to fight it. Faster speeds and it doesn't want to lean and you have to fight it... A forze is a bit similar in this regard.

Power is fine (especially low down torque), comfort regarding seat very good but I don't like the forward feet position. Also found the suspension could be better.

Personally the bike didn't convince me. But then again there's not many alternatives. Probably the T-Max or what it's called from Yamaha. IIRC that one was even more expensive at 530k Oo

I didn't find the Forza too bad, a vast improvement on my PCX, but then I'm not a hugely experienced MC rider, mostly scooters around urban spots and a period of a year in 1989 on a Yamaha 175 trails bike for fun around Phuket before they got proper roads. Those were the days....

I've only got the YouTube reviews to go on, as you may know a test ride here is a 2 minute spin around the car park in Big Bike. I will, of course, be hiring one for a similar trip I did on the Forza, 4-5 days on country / mountain roads, before I ever consider forking out that sum for an X ADV.

The armchair position is fine for me, and I really like the absence of any foot controls.

I can well imagine if you are used to traditional mc's it will feel odd.

    Thanks for your input.

I was surprised it didn't feel as heavy as it looks, and no heavier, impression wise, than the Forza. I understands that's because of the low centre of gravity, having watched all the YouTube reviews.

  7. I'm quite interested in the Honda X ADV, as a result of my recent 4 day trip / test drive of the new Honda Forza 300, having found that to be a bit underpowered for coping with the mountain inclines. Does anyone have one of these, and how have they found it? Also did you change from another scooter or a traditional MC?

Before all you purist MC riders stick the boot in, I prefer the automatic / scooter concept to save my ageing ankles from all that stress of gear changing and perching above the foot brake all day long. After all where is the pleasure in it??

The X ADV has a manual option and automatic override, so you have the choice with it.

Having read the previous post in 2017, I would also like to point out that appearance is very much subjective and I, for one, find it far more interesting and attractive than all of the maxi scooters available on the market today.

Yes it's a bit pricey, as are the hire charges to get an opportunity to really test drive one, but what other choice is there in this type of bike.

no need to use indicator I never do...

it bugs me that when wanting to enter a road....where one can only turn left....why INDICATE as that is the only way one can drive so it is obvious one is going to turn left!!!!

    Not in Thailand!!

I frequently see drivers turning the wrong way out of a junction to drive down the wrong side of the road / in the wrong direction.

Also I commend anybody who uses their indicators - full stop.... A rare event on Thai roads, even if strictly speaking unnecessary.

If the owner was a foreigner then you'll (probably) need  signed copies of his passport photo page, old visa and exit from Thailand stamp

Well if they do change your details in the green book at the DLT..then its yours, as far as I know there is nothing else you can do to check before hand  like you can in say the UK...you can check for  accidents/write offs, finance still owed reported stolen etc...here the finance/leasing company may keep the book till its paid off and/or they will be registered as the owner.1993386484_page5.thumb.jpg.8d8550a6b477b26f54901dcc68cc8c51.jpg

You obviously have paid no money up front at all..but I guess the reason its cheap is because the owner went overseas and they can't get the needed paperwork.

Many thanks for your detailed comments and advice.

I was already very sceptical when they offered to deliver to Krabi from Chonburi, having already suggested I travel up to Chonburi and meet them at the DLT with a bank cashiers cheque (BCC) in the owners name. But as you said there have been such occasions when somebody is leaving the country. Although this guy had already left, so what's the panick.

At this point I'm thinking it surely is a scam, especially considering the heavily discounted price of 80,000 THB on a nearly new motorbike (7 weeks old and 140kms) in perfect condition, costing 165,000 THB new. I would think he could have walked into any Honda shop and easily got over 100,000THB on the spot.

I asked the questions though as I was seriously interested to know the mechanics of such a situation.

However, I decided to play along to see where it led.

When delivery date was agreed, I then received a lengthy email explaining how he wanted a "secure" bank transfer / money gram in the morning of the day he was going to deliver the bike at 5.00pm(?), to show my serious intent to buy. He attached a link to TMB to show how this type of transfer could only be released to him if / when I advised him of a password (?)

I replied asking how he planned to get to Krabi from Chonburi with the bike in 8hrs? The bank opens at 8.30- 9.00am and he arrives at 5.00pm - magic! No answer...

I also told him his representative would need to stay overnight to accompany me to DLT to complete the checks and transfer, and then I would hand over a BCC. Reply - no transfer, buy another bike....

I wanted to post this scenario hopefully to help others avoid such a scam. I've also contacted Bahtsold to have them take down the add and, if possible trace him for the police to act. Wishful thinking, I know!

There are however, deals to be had if you're careful. I bought a car 1 year old with approx 6200kms for 900,000, in perfect condition from a guy leaving the country, which cost him over 1.43m THB new.

The message is, follow the recommended procedures, don't send / pay anything in advance, and enjoy a happy outcome.

Absolutely no reason not to place the vehicle in your own name.

The process is a simple as transferring the vehicle into your Wife's name, you just need a little more documentation.

    - Passport Copy's

    - Visa Copys (any type of visa is ok including Visa Exempt stamp)

    - Poof of Residence (Affirmation of Residence document from your Embassy or Immigration, House book (with you in it) or Yellow ID card).

The transfer can either take place your local DLT, or with the signed power of attorney document to permit you to process the transfer in the absence of the original owner.

Regarding another comment that Thai's get better deals on insurance etc absolute rubbish, you'll get the same rates on insurance as a Thai - use a broker and shop around with 1st Class insurance of a well known company.

Hope I'm not hijacking the OP, but could you advise if it's possible to conduct an ownership transfer registration at a different DLT than the one on the existing registration?

I'm assured the guy will provide his green book and his ID and a power of attorney for his friend or me to transfer the ownership into my name. The owner has already moved overseas.

The bike is being delivered to us in our area to complete the sale.

Also, does the DLT check the documents for fraud / evidence of theft, or is that down to me to check. I know they cross check the vehicle engine and chassis numbers with the green book, but will a new registration preclude any risk of the bike being stolen and repercussions on me at a later date?

I'm a bit unsure, as it's one of those "too good to be true" scenarios. However, as we are not being put to any inconvenience I thought it was worth considering.

I bought my car on a similar very good deal, but on that occasion I flew to Bangkok, met the seller and viewed the car at their house. It all turned out fine and a very good deal.

The post you are quoting outlines the new, current, requirements for a retirement visa extension. In force from 1 July 2019 I believe. Previously you could remove the 800k from your bank as soon as the extension was granted, but had to seed it for 3 months before the next one.

Marriage extensions have different rules for lump sums and seeding, which you apparently didn't meet anyway, and luckily was granted an extension until you did.

Thank you for the clarification, I must confess I was not aware of the new regulations. However my Marriage extension was eventually issued in June.

Yes I was lucky they didn't send me away to start over again with a new Non-O visa application, but they also lined their coffers with another 1,900 Baht for it, when I would have happily paid 500B for a one day overstay solution.

How do the new regulations affect the seed money for a Marriage Ext?

  13. 4 minutes ago, Jingthing said:

Not really. For retirement extensions you can't go under 800k for 3 months after and after that never under 400k until the beginning of the next 800k baht 3 months seasoning period. So basically at least 400k locked up indefinitely as long as you want to keep getting extensions.

Sent from my Lenovo A7020a48 using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

That doesn't accord with my experience.

In fact on my last extension I was forced to take a 2 month extension as my seasoning money arrived one day late to satisfy the 400k requirement for a marriage extension, previously a retirement extension, as they didn't want any glitches on the paperwork being sent to Bangkok.

My bank account showed around 100k prior to the deposit of my seasoning money, and there were no repercussions.... In all 4 of my extensions (3 x retirement) my account has shown far less than the 400k you state has to be maintained prior to the seasoning period.

Thailand's become a joke of a country. Not only does farang get charged more than thais for virtually everything. They get stupid fines for address reporting mistakes (thats the reason the make it so complicated), ridiculous rules from immigration (you need money in the bank to prove you can support yourself, but you're not allowed to use it!!!!!) and now required to make mandatory donations to thai insurance companies.

It's not even a good place to invest anymore. Even at the worst, it was still way better under Thaksin's government.

Long live Thaksin, may he return to claim his rightful title that was stolen from him by criminals

The money you show for visa extensions CAN be used once the extension has been awarded!

    Who told you different?

    Bt40,000 outpatient coverage???
This would be the worse. This means you need to buy a much more expansive coverage plan than you might need just for this visa. I am not interested in outpatient coverage and still forced to buy it?
This will shake out a lot of foreigners living here. As if the outpatient medical services would be the ones which have outstanding bills. No doctor treats you "outpatient" if you don't show your credit card or health insurance. It's all about emergencies (in terms of "open bills")

I have visited 7 different hospitals and a few clinics all over the country for outpatient treatment, on more than one occasion, one resulting in a 3 day stay, others included expensive tests and dental treatment,  and never been asked for advance proof of funds to pay, nor have I been escorted to the cashiers counter with the bill. Also in many cases I have given an hotel as my address.

Agree that customs duty is calculated on CIF. However, here's a little something that nobody has picked up on.  As Singapore is an ASEAN country there should be NO customs duty on items purchased in and shipped from Singapore to Thailand.

I regularly purchase items online, and ensure that the item is being shipped from an ASEAN country or China and in doing so I've never been charged customs duty.

    Nice one, thanks.

Does it make any difference to the rules if the item originated in a different country. The seller to me is a Singaporean trading company, but the product originated in USA?

So a company in Singapore quoted you FOB Bangkok ?

If so one would expect the goods to be loaded on a ship or truck for further shipment ?

Fob does not include duty - normally fob would be used for in same country _ fob Singapore

Although I'm no expert, I agree with your interpretation of FOB, i.e. it can only be applied at the port of dispatch, Singapore in this case.

  18. I'm not questioning the wisdom of the contributors who confirm that duty is paid on the CIF value. I asked and I got the answer, thank you.

BUT, playing devils advocate, how would a new / unused item, subject to duty, be charged in amongst a container full of personal effects being shipped into Thailand which are exempt from duty on a settlement basis? Would the entire cost of the shipping and insurance be charged against that one item?

It just doesn't appear to make sense to me, but more to the point the regulations I was sent by the lady from customs specifically noted valued against FOB, i.e. the cost of the item only.

I have today had a reply from Thai Customs, and the condition is in writing from the lady that the value is against the CIF cost. However she has not deemed to include any link to their regulations clearly stipulating this claim, and is still contradictory to that noted above.
