Purdey replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox

Banking Stocks Poised to Surge Amid Global Rate Cuts
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Lower interest will encourage more debt. This isn't going to help the people up to their ears in debt. -
Currently, those with a few million can go abroad to gamble. At home, the poorest Thais bet on football and insect races. Casinos in Thailand will lead to (more) corruption and create more families thrown into poverty because gambling for them means wealth with no hard work.

Bangkok Governor Supports Congestion Charge to Curb Traffic
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
If the 20 baht flat fare is successful, and people leave their cars at home, how will the governor make cash to pay for the flat fare in the future? Bangkok GDP 252.128 (2022) Billion USD Pop. 19,900,000 (2022) London GDP 692.765 (2022) Billion USD Pop. 8,866,198 (2022) Singapore GDP 525.228 (2024) Billion USD Pop. 5,938,000 (2024) (all on Wikipedia) Perhaps it will anger people who struggle to get to work. Certainly, mass transit doesn't go everywhere. -
Why are most movies released post-2000 unwatchable?
Purdey replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in Entertainment
I don't think it has to do with political correctness ("wokeness") and more to do with making money. The number of movie directors who complain about producers mangling their work suggests trying to satisfy everyone and make money is getting in the way of making a good film. -

Thailand Probes Thaksin's Alleged Political Manipulation
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
How would they know this if they weren't there? Unless there is a blabbermouth in the camp. But he will have to be revealed if he becomes a witness. -
Thailand Gears Up for Tourist Boom: 12.2 Million Expected by Year-End
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Reliance on a seasonal industry relying on low-educated people bodes poorly for the country's development. Tourists can turn on a whim and go somewhere else more beautiful. Invest in a good education and build high tech industries is more long-term. -
Cabinet Set to Review Casino-Entertainment Complex Feedback
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If the majority of the feedback is negative, how will the government push it through anyhow? -

If only she had killed a policeman, she would have gotten off scot free. -
Italy's Offshore Migration Scheme in Albania Has Begun
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Countries are willing to spend millions to take these stopgap measures, knowing that the same refugees will return when sent back to their home countries. Why isn't more attention paid to developing the economies and stopping wars in their countries of origin so that the people don't want to move? -
Nevertheless, I still believe that guests in the country should not argue for exceptions to laws. If you know the fifth precept of Buddhism, you will know that whether or not people break a precept or commandment (remember Thou shalt not kill?) the religion advises against alcohol. Many people in rural areas do give up alcohol for Buddhist Lent, whatever you have seen in cities.

7 Types of Used Cars to Avoid in Thailand
Purdey replied to CharlieH's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Been driving a Mazda MX-5 for 5 years and no real trouble. If the maintenance with the dealer is duly recorded it should say something. -
Pink I.D Card & Yellow Book
Purdey replied to Bangkok Black's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Got my pink card from the local district office. Pretty smooth except for a ridiculous request for my parents' names and address. I told them my parents had passed away at least ten years previously so they didn't have a house now. Anyhow, I gave their names and the last address before they passed away. Then they asked for the telephone number. I gave it to them and said, if you call them please give them my regards. The officer nearly fell of his chair. P.S. the blue book helped speed up the driving license renewal. Don't ask me why. -
Arrest Near Trump Rally Uncovers Weapons, Fake Passports
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
It is unlikely the police can do anything about a man with guns. He has a right to have them, after all. -
Steven Seagal’s Loyalty to Putin 'Ready To Die for Russia'
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I find the wording interesting. Dying with Putin, not dying for Putin.
