  1. The problem is that I don't live in that area anymore, meaning it's the other end of Bangkok. Tried to find one in the area where I'm living now, but saw only closed shops and/or lady salons... And not many foreigners live here, not to mention no prices on display. Maybe I will check for recommendations online, or, alternatively, wait till my next trip to Pattaya... LOL
  2. Yeah, via Google Maps I found the opening hours online. It's supposed to be open, but it's not.
  3. I found info online about one I've been going to since 2000. Supposedly open on Fridays, so either that info is wrong, I was unlucky, or they closed for good...
  4. LOL. No, actually, somehow, I found the opening ours of the shop I've been going to online. Usually 7 a.m. But either it is closed today, or closed for good; which would be the second barber shop within a couple of months. What is it with barber shops going out of business in 2022/23?
  5. What time do Bangkok barber shops open on a Friday?
  6. https://aseannow.com/topic/1307547-calls-for-clarification-of-new-tax-regime-which-appears-to-target-expat-foreign-income-sources/
  7. This is becoming quite common. Pay bills, or even into your own bank account - asked for passport...
  8. The prime minister was quoted as saying that 'foreigners in Thailand are the target due to some "inequalities". (A post on this news forum quoted a related newspaper article a few days ago.)
  9. We will only know for sure once a forum member transfers a larger sum to a Thailand bank in 2024...
  10. True. Poorly treated, underpaid, and hired only for the lowest jobs. If one goes to a bank here, where staff has no clue about anything, and also doesn't understand a word of English, but only the security guard from Myanmar does, who is also alert and knowledgeable, one has to ask why they don't swop jobs...
  11. Not likely. According to a recent BP article, there were (only) 156,596 expats in 2022. Exchange rates are mostly influenced by a strong/weak dollar, the crude oil price, or if Thailand's exports slump significantly.
  12. True. This is not about international double tax agreements, or 'already taxed or not', but about the actual implementation... Knowing that everything here (e.g. Immigration offices, visa issuance, different pricing for foreigners, etc., etc.) is in a 'grey area', how do expats know that they will be treated fairly and according to the letter of the law?
  13. When I got the usual interrogation I just lied about everything. Haven't been asked that question for a long time. Used to be one of the first by taxi drivers years ago. But it seems they don't know 'that much' English anymore.
  14. Thai-French, then French-English...
  15. I remember from years ago that there were also lots of Cambodians. But yes, calling Phuket 'overcrowded by tourists' based on the small number of locals is quite a stretch, as there is a large number of Thais from other parts of the country living there, who are not registered in the province. Same applies to Pattaya and, most probably, Krabi. Strange though that the three islands off Surat Thani are not on the list.
  16. Perhaps they saw Kazakhstan's size on a world map and figured, if we can attract 10 million Chinese, then probably we can get millions of tourists and a lot of money from Kazakhstan too... But if it doesn't work out, we can always make it easier for, potentially, millions of people from the DR Congo, Mongolia, or Greenland to come to Thailand...
  17. I think they have in the past 6 to 12 months.
  18. Never mind the corruption. But also the large number of governments (more than 50), constitutions (20), and military coups (22) in the past ninety years, which is notoriously unstable, even in comparison with most other countries in Asia.
  19. My bet is on an 'exit tax'; you want to leave the country - pay 20% of your declared funds in Thailand first...
  20. Still not clear, whether: 1. They intend to tax a second time already (in other countries) taxed income, and 2. What they define as 'income' (e.g. will they just slap a tax on all incoming funds, or not)? 3. If 2.) how to claim back such a tax if one doesn't have income in Thailand.
  21. They probably just copied one of the first pics on Google Search... Lower national park fees are the last thing I worry about residing in Thailand. Visa issues, immigration matters, scams, overcharging in daily life, etc., are way more important issues.
  22. Not to worry, Thailand is aiming for some of what's left of your, already taxed, income...
