We aren't discussing Monsoons...........Nothing wrong with my directions......seems you have a comprehension problem

"Because winds are named for the direction from which the wind is blowing, these winds are called the northeasterly trade winds in the Northern Hemisphere and the southeasterly trade winds in the Southern Hemisphere. The trade winds of both hemispheres meet at the doldrums."

Nice try and no need for the ad hominem attack!  In the geographical area you mention, these are not trade winds at all ...but monsoon generated winds (southwest for roughly 9 months and Northeast for roughly two.)  To paraphrase your link, "Because winds are named for the direction from which the wind is blowing,"...therefore the winds from the southwest are called southwest winds........If these were southeast winds as you say, they would be blowing offshore! I hope this wasn't too complicated for you. A bit of homework for you before you come back and post again, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsoon

Well.....the winds generally come from the South and go in an easterly direction....but sometimes we get south west winds ....and then there is even the Northerly winds.

come from the south and go in and easterly direction????so you mean southwest winds....see the other post on Northeast/southwest monsoons.....I would not want to ask you for directions....

The Beach......with the south east winds blowing any pollution that Map Ta Phut has to offer inland. Study done by Bangkok Hospital confirms this!

southeast or southwest?...sorry I am a bit of a stickler for detail

It because of Thailand's location in relation to the earths gravity. Water does no move well here and often wanders off in random directions. Its worse on full moons.

Never heard such an explanation before....could it be the kids jumping up and down on Phangan during the full moon party causing a kind of rippling tsunami amplitude butterfly effect in the gulf, or am I missing something

  5. Thoroughly disappointing movie from start to finish......right from the fuzzy illegible script setting up the story on the first screen(not to mention various other fuzzy captions which were obviously created for 3D).

Movie seemed to only be about special effects.  Whatever happened to a great story and great acting...where are Bogart and McCall when you need them?

The topic really isn't about who does the best burger, chips, or foie gras really. It's a more general thing about the potential of Pattaya to be a food destination.

LOL...first time I have seen foie gras thrown in with fries and burgers....a bit like comparing Chateaux Margaux and Coke......

Re. Queens, Copenhagen, etc.  I would put Singapore, Penang, Tokyo and a few places way ahead of those esp for non-western cuisine.

The big flaw in the film The Beach was that the island was meant to be almost impossible to reach: DiCaprio and friends had to swim there from the mainland and then jump off waterfalls à la Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to reach it. However once there, when the islanders had to go and get supplies, suddenly they were miraculously able to leave and return by boat.
One film which does quite well in capturing a first visit to Thailand from a Western point of view is, IMO, Butterfly Man (2002).

Not correct.  Leo and pals were dropped off on an adjacent island and swam from there.  They ended up on opposite side of the island to the Beach and hence had to do waterfall jump to get there.  As it is fiction, this is totally plausible.  The biggest weakness was the script as the beginning half was good, but like so many films the writers/producers ran out of ideas...

I don't see why not if they are exceptionally good ones.

    Maybe you've never experienced that.

    On fries, also why not?

Also, I would love to get my hands on some sweet potato fries.

Well if fast food like cheeseboigas is on the list, so should all chain style fast food offerings and convenience stores.....who does the best potato chip these days?

One thing I've noticed although it's probably biased is the recent influx of quality cheeseburgers.  Yes I like cheeseburgers.

My short list is Jim's Burgers, RMPM, OMG Burgers, Barbeque Prime Time on the 9.

After years of eating chow hall food from Indian cooks in Iraq and Afghanistan curry based meals aren't really relished anymore, probably a shame.

I do like the Chinese food though and find it to be mostly different here than the offerings stateside in the USA.

Another influx of improvement seems to be the smoked pork ribs, many great choices abound now, street wise not so much.

    Just my 2 cents.

Cheeseburgers on a foodie thread?  Why not throw in fries as well?

In your opinion. Mine is that he was rubbish, and he destroyed the essence of the book by insisting on getting the girl.

The shame of Boyle is that agreed.

However, Di Caprio has been good in other movies.

Weak script..Dicaprio saved the day ( and maybe Boyle's career) with a brilliant Oscar level performance.  The nutty guy from Trainspotting and lovely French gal also added a bit of spice.

Great reads are more than the words on the page. One needs to have an imagination as well.

However, the film falls in the category of "could have been great" and De Caprio was a disaster. Ewan McGregor as Richard and a director that stuck to the book could have made a classic. Unfortunately, there was a great deal of miscasting in the film, along with a stupid screenplay.

Related information that not many people know- the big Buddha in the opening scene was made of polystyrene and remained in Krabi Town for some years after. Sadly replaced by a shop now.

The On On hotel in Phuket town substituted for the guest house in Khao San. Still there.

The bus scene in the movie with the vehicle engine hood removed is BS. Phuket buses of that era had engine covers.

Dicaprio was great in this movie.....and in many others

    Nice!

Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia is probably the nicest I have ever tried. I was in a great Tequilla Bar in Mexico city and asked the Owner to line up what he considered to be, six shots of his best Tequilla. After 'Blind-tasting' them all, I chose the Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia. Haven't been able to find it in Pattaya as yet.

My favourite accessible Tequila is probably KAH.

where did you find Kah in Pattaya?

In over 6 years, I've never left my BKK apartment complex without long pants, a collared shirt and socks.  And within the complex, the only time I'm missing one of those items is to swim in the pool.

Still, I object to characterizing any human being as "quality" or not, based on what they wear in the tropics on holiday.  While I'm appalled at the appearance of some of the nicest, most generous people I know, it's easy to separate the person from their quirks.

They may have different standards of dress than I do, but that doesn't make them less than me, or anyone else walking the planet.

Socks in the tropics?  Don Johnson would not be impressed!

I guess this TV advertiser will need to update the travel guide.

I wonder if it would be fun to go help them rebuild.   I imagine unlike Thailand a farang could actually be allowed to work and contribute.

Do you mean Puerto Rico......best check to make sure you show up in the right place!

Drinking it now.  It's been at Tops, Rim Ping and 7/11 in Chiang Mai for several months at this price.  Heck, even the little mini mart in our condo stocks it, but at a higher price.  Just waiting for the tax increase to hit the price.

I rather like the taste.  It has more flavor than Dewers or even Teachers.  I switched to Scotch (the drink of my forefathers) after wine started to bother my tummy.  Hubby got tired of my Johnny Walker Double Black habit and started to bring home bottles of other stuff (most of which I rejected after a couple drinks) and I had to admit this Bell's wasn't all that bad.  And much better on the budget.

I could have sworn I read one bottle that said it was bottled in Vietnam, but the bottle in front of my right now says "distilled, blended & bottled in Scotland".

And the only thing I mix with Scotch is a little bottled water and ice or maybe for a nightcap Scotch and milk.  That settles the tummy nicely.

Scotch and milk....good lord, now I have heard it all!  Robbie Burns is rolling in his wee grave!

You don't quit. You keep piling on the lies. I get it, you've got some kind of "Goldbuggy" up your you know what over this issue, but it is not OK to fabricate lies about other people.

    To wit --

I am not making a "big commotion" over this restaurant's smoking policy.

If I wanted to hurt them, I would have mentioned the name of the restaurant. I don't intend to ever mention it.

I've been eating there frequently. Not once a month. More like twice a week. I like it that much. I might even be their best customer as they're a new restaurant. You just made up a fiction of  how frequently you imagine I eat there. I never said. Your tactics are SLEAZY.

Yes, since the smoke out, it's likely I will brave even trying to eat there less often. But nothing has happened yet to convince me never to try it again.

I did fail to mention that when I left the restaurant (basically forced out because of the smoke, having the second half of my meal ruined) I did quickly mention to a waitress that I was bothered about the smoke. That was reasonable to say given the spectacle of my coughing and rushing out from there as I did. I didn't demand they change their policy or even ask them to change their policy. I've never said I intend to demand they change their policy or even ask them to change their policy. Telling them why I'm running out or telling them (as a regular that they know) why I'm walking in then walking out (will do if the place is already very smoked) is not demanding anything. If I go there and see a crowd of the nationality that is their base eating and not even smoking yet, I won't even walk in the door or say anything, because I will know there is a fair chance they would ruin my meal with smoking.

I've gone out of my way to emphasize multiple times that I fully understand it's their business and their customer base which seems to be OK with the extreme smoking situation. I've mentioned my tolerance for CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. Yet you FAIL to hear any of that and instead go on multiple obnoxious rants attacking me for trying to boss them around. Accusing me of being like that ugly American actor (turns out it was probably an act) at the big C.

As far as knowing food. You don't believe me. That's fine. I believe me. I know the local food scene and know what they are doing is distinctive. Many of their dishes are done elsewhere but the chef's style is DISTINCTIVE, I am very confident of that, and some, as far as I know, are unique to the place.

I understand many people don't care about food like I do. To them a dish called x is a dish called x. Not me. Not everyone is the same.

Time to think outside the box if you want to beat this thang.......but you may have to suffer a bit first.  Go in with a box of cheapo cigars and chain smoke them, or try a couple of packs of gauloises/gitanes.....see if you can personally enact change through reverse psy-ops.  You will be a hero on this forum if it works!
