What California in got to do is get rid of the greenies that run the place and start doing controlled burns in the canyons and mountains and get the residents to move large trees and shrubs and long grass that is too close to their houses. I watched videos of the fires and the fire raced up the mountain and the row of houses backing on to it had dry grass and trees right up to their back patio The firies had no hope of saving those houses.they could only move away and watch them burn.Then there was the dry fire hydrants. !!! Thats another story.

Good point about timber and other flammable materials in these houses but the fire was ferocious and and was pushed by a 100 mph wind and would have had a temperature in the thousand of degrees and I doubt even a steel frame and roofed house would have fared any better. In such a fire the steel in a building melts and buckles from the heat. I also I heard the reporters say that a lot of the mansions were many years old when timber was the main material.The whole reason this was so bad is that people had large trees and high dry grass in there back yard and all around which backed onto a hill. Also there was a lot of huge trees on the footpaths that caught fire and the wind blew the embers across the road and set that house on fire....but California is too green to clear any high grass and make fire breaks.

Work for the dole was applied in several small country towns in Australia in 1998. In small towns where the was little employment and the council couldn't afford to employ all of the these workers they were put to work building footpaths,reparing roads, gardening ,cleaning up the streets etc,etc. It was very successful but I think it was curtailed because of pressure from the do - gooders who said that they shouldn't have to work and it's not fair as they can't sleep in until lunchtime every day.

I can't believe that there were enough life jackets for all passengers. the last Thai boat I was on to Phi Phi there were about 100 on board and I could only see 6. When I asked a crew member where are all the life jackets he replied "don't need this good boat not sink.".

To say that if staff don.t get their share of the 10% surcharge is a ridiculous statement.The would decides who gets what and he may even keep the lot for his retirement.The only way to ensure that a staff member who has given good service is to screw up the Baht note in your hand and put it in their hand as you leave.

The attitude of these idiot foreigners bring with them wnen they travel to an overseas country is because of a breakdown in society in western countries of respect for the law and order. In Australia crime is out of control in most states particularly juveniles but not limited to them.These kids as young as 10 are running rampant breaking into houses, stealing cars and ramming police cars and other cars on the road and committing armed robberies and carjackings .Their parents cannot control them and they don't attend school and just do whatever they want because the judical system is so weak. So when they go overses they think that that is normal accepted behaviour but come unstuck when thry go to a country with a stricter policy on law and order.
