I agree his behavior is abhorrent. There may or may not have been these clauses you refer to in his contract, we neither of us know. We do know that dismissing people on the basis of unproven allegations ones with legal risks. The court is the arbiter of guilt, not the BBC.

We now know Edwards is not ‘of the highest character’. I expect the BBC took legal counsel on the matter. Had the BBC dismissed him before the verdict and he had been found innocent, I expect the same perpetual BBC critics would be complaining about the cost of the ensuing legal settlement.
