Been there (East Timor)  a few times when we dropped anchor, never gave a thought about going back on my own dime. It's poor, uses USD currency except for coins. It's poor, kids begging, no kinda depressing.

Single, no kids, PI for sure for awhile or else go back to USA. Kinda missing it.

Not to mention June gloom that lasts most of the summer.  I prefer a beach with sunshine!  And of course, prices.  It's crazy expensive to live there now. 

Plus the damn water is sooo cold. I spent 3-4 mos. a year in San Diego for 17 years waiting for job assignments. Love OB, PB, Point Loma. Traffic is terrible on the 5, 805.

The drop off and pick-up traffic is off the charts bad for both schools. Living within motorbike range transport will make your life much easier for taking kid to school.

The fact that you took the time to reply says loads about your present life. I walked away from 100K-135K USD/yr working 6 mos/yr. to be with my daughter growing up. A few beers at the local every now and again is a way to keep up with goings on.
