Did he stick his hand in the bag and steal? No...He found it....sort of... Doesn't the carelessness of losee bear some responsibility.

Finders keepers, loosers weepers...…… There should be a penalty for carelessness.

If I was the police, I'd alert every gold shop in the country of the types of jewels stolen (Robinson will have record) and then give the gold shop owner a reward for alerting the police if a customers bearing such gold tries to sell at their shop. Good plan?
I saw on TV that the jewelry has identifying numbers on them, I would only assume these numbers are shared country wide with gold shops.
-
Many ifs involved here. Any guy ballsey enough to do this alone probably dumped the gun, hid the gold. Now what? He knows he can't sell the gold because of identifying numbers, melt the gold down is an option. Not sure how it would sell but it wouldn't be tracable. I don't see this guy being captured, not after 5 days with limited clues.

There's a lot of real estate between Bangkok and the rice paddies. Let's hear it for beach living.

Change the topic to "farm girl non-drinker" and I might be interested.
My experience of staying in Isaan is that most "farm girls" will drink on special occasions. We had quite a few drinking sessions up there and those girls were right there drinking beer and whiskey.

Im very ambivalent. I spent years in Alaska so it was Mountains and scenery. I had no urban throb.
Now in Bangkok, I have urban throb. Like major throbbing throbbbbbbb.
Next year I may try to do a balance by splitting my time in 3 places to get a bit of everything.
But I might spend all summer in Wyoming/Idaho/Montana so may need throb again next winter.
I wish I could have a car here.
What's stopping you?

Russians did another stupid maneuver last june with the USS Chancellorsville, I was on an auxiliary ship nearby. Crazy stunt.

Looking at the wakes of those vessels it would appear that the Russian ship was on the starboard side of the US ship and the vessels were on converging/crossing courses:
"Crossing situations
When two power-driven vessels are crossing, the vessel which has the other on the starboard side must give way and avoid crossing ahead of her."
And that the US ship was also traveling faster (overtaking):
"Overtaking
... ... an overtaking vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken."
Not immediately apparent why the US ship thought that it could/should have honked its horn (like a yabba crazed Thai driver with a gun under his seat) to demand that Ivan moved over.
On the face of it, it appears that the US ship was doubly at fault.
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea ...
You call that an overtaking.....really..I'd call it a collision course. To come up from behind and get within 60 yards is quite insane.

Ruskies came up from behind within 60 yards before they altered course. Insane best describes it.

I'm not always happy with the high air fares flying my family north for holidays, but reading these news articles puts everything into perspective.

You need only 400000 in the bank, or 40000 as monthly incomes. I also anticipate a sharp rise in the numbers due to the health insurance requirement.
Financially speaking you'd be ahead of the game putting 800K in Thai bank and not having a wife or steady g/f for that matter.

Never gonna happen. Just talk. Never seen a more amateur tourist management then in ????????. They could easily copy other countries achievements, but their cultural and personal attitudes do not allow for this. Pity. USED TO BEexotic and amazing... Check back in 20 years. MS>
We could always implement US laws which prohibits alcohol on the beach. Careful what you wish for.

Besides the Big Bike shops are their any shops that carry quality brands? What to look for in a helmet?

Assume the passenger noticed driver nodding off could have spoken up, sad. I know when to pull off the road for a power nap, wonder if alcohol wasn't perhaps a small factor.

How about we just leave things as they are and have been, pedestrians cross when safe to do so and cars don't stop for pedestrians except to avoid injuries. How about that, can we please stop trying to enforce western standards upon Thailand.
I arrived back in San Diego and jwalk as I would here. Walk out to little concrete divider and wait for other traffic to pass but the cars come to a screeching halt JHC come on people, just drive, I can see you....just drive and when it's safe I'll cross.

We occasionally drive to Jomtein Beach to spend the day at the beach. Try to get there by 9am to secure a parking spot near soi 7 and as I'm driving the length of the beach road I see farang out walking, biking, at the beach socializing and think to myself that this seems like a pretty nice place to retire for a single guy anyways. Me, I love the ocean and couldn't have this lifestyle back in the states.

Probably between 5-10 degrees outside , I,m not the kind of person that needs the sun to keep them warm , I can get some clothes to keep me warm when I go outside .
Wearing trousers and a jacket isnt beyond my capabilities .
A slight inconvenience having to keep warm, bit I can cope with that .
BTW, didnt they have snow or sleet up north in Chiang rai last week ?
Anyway , nice to walk around without having to go to 7/11 to chill out a bit in the 40 C summer heat
Next time in TL rent a place with AC.
