Well, everybody marching to their own drum and having their own rules is one of the biggest features of THAINESS.
Surprised these fishermen are not overflowing with pride. Or, maybe most of them are indeed not Thai.

Typical Plan:
1. couple of big committees
2. a few speeches by unqualified old guys who know other unqualified old guys
3. some poster boards with "Sharing Economy with Thai Characteristics" written in a cartoonish style
4. maybe a commercial or two on local channels in between soaps.
5. success

I've dated a couple (exactly 2) Thai high society or wannabes with money.
I can say with absolutely certainty that they were some of the WORST experiences of my life.
Status and money generally seem to make Thais into psuedo human, nearly totally intellectually vacant people.
There is NOTHING worse than interactions with these fake people who wear their unearned status on their sleeves!
Sex is also terrible, as you could imagine, dead fish comes to mind. Rather a 7/11 girl! ?

No thanks. I'll take any random 7/11 girl over this grandmother. No she sees that no wealthy Thai man will sponsor her, so she's on tough times with little beauty left to trade on. Sad

The old phrase about 'not putting all your eggs in one basket...' is ringing away in my ears...
Hi - not sure. China is 1) nearby and 2) MASSIVE. Thailand is to China what Spain and Greece are to Europe and what Mexico is to the US. Relatively cheap, tropical destinations. As much as I dislike Chinese groups, it's only natural that Thailand focus on the Chinese (even at the relative ignoring of Western tourist). In 20 years, there may be more middle class Chinese than in the US and Europe combined. Sad to think about, but likely true.

As much as most dislike large Chinese tour groups, they wield their power through the Chinese State well.
They understand that the only way to motivate Thais (their cousins) is through financial threat.
Now the Thais are scrambling to try as many boneheaded ideas to calm the Chinese to get them back here spending money.

They really are crass people and proud of the fact, it would seem. Smiles and well-dressed on the outside, unrefined and primitive on the inside (many, not all).

Rubbish, sugar is fuel for active bodies. Though refined sugar should be avoided. A high carb low fat diet is ideal for active sporty people. If you are a sedentary person, eat a lot less of everything, you don't need it. Fruit, vegetables, grains, pasta, brown and black rice, are all good.
Rubbish. See? I can do that, too.
You are arguing with hundreds of prominent scientists, not with me.
Cheers

Sugar is worse than alcohol. Trans fats are also horrible, but Thailand has a FAR larger issue in all the sugar Thai put in everything.

There is a long history of confusion, and the US is actually this time much to blame. Alot has to do with industry like the corn and other sugar producing industries in the US.
Most competent research now admits that it is likely carbs (SUGAR) not fats in the main that cause issue. Or worse, the consumption of sugar mixed with fat.

why is it that on this forum, when you explain crime stats and such saying thailand is more dangerous or more unsafe, people stop replying when you are right....
in 2016 thailands murder rate was 3.5 per 100,000 people = 2,387 murders according to thailand.
but according to research by the University of Washington.
there were more than 3,000 homicides by a firearm in thailand. rate of 4.45 deaths per 100,000 people. but if you add all kinds of murder the figure is about 4,000 - 4,500 murder = 5.88 - 6.6 per 100,000 people,
but that is up to each one to believe which one is the true. and what comes into my mind is thailand is very careful about tourism they dont want anything to scare away tourists...
This is exactly right. No disrespect intended, but it is hard to understand why educated farang would take Thai statistics seriously and not understand they have to be used as a lower starting point.
Thailand has neither the national organization to properly collect such stats nor the motivation to properly report them as doing so would a) make them loose precious "face" and b) potentially impact the tourism (and sex trade associated monies) the country receives.
If a farang can't figure this out, perhaps he doesn't want to understand. In a nation where it is the national character to lie in most any situation, you need multiple sources of information to formulate a reasonably accurate assessment.

Smart farang know that with Thais you cannot really trust anything at all. It's all a gamble. They are especially untrustworthy where precision would be involved. We all take our chances.

Will it be a scam like the duty free at Suvarnabhumi?

Have come to genuinely love Thailand and the Thai people. But, Thais and Safety? Don't be silly. All the main underpinnings of Thai culture contribute to a complete lack of safety.
The biggest issue for tourists in my opinion is the variance between
1) what Thais pretend to do and pretend to be and say and
2) what they actually do, say and are
Tourists don't get slaughtered in some dangerous countries because they are not deceived into thinking those countries are safe. When people goto Africa, nobody thinks that everything is perfectly safe, for example. Not so with Thailand.
Most Westerners especially would tend to assume that so many people (like nearly almost any Thai they would ever encounter) would not outright lie in instances of safety are concerned, especially because Westerners tend to value life differently.
But, the truth is that Thais find it incredibly easy to lie even when doing so will endanger people. They also focus relentlessly on optics and what things look like to the detriment of substance.
What it all amounts to are tourists who genuinely think Thais are something they are entirely not because Thais play the fictional character so well.
Thais can't possibly change their safety culture unless they fundamentally change their culture. Too bad they, as a national characteristic, generally lack introspection to understand.

Us Farang had predicted this outcome. Completely expected and commonplace for locals. It's ALWAYS the foreigners' faults.
The difference with the Chinese is they have herd mentality. They are now canceling Thailand vacations in droves. Phuket getting hit hard as we speak. The Thais will fold when they see the money drying up. Expect lots of Chinese red themed events at tourist areas nationwide as the locals prostitute themselves.

Exactly, it's obvious from most comments that many people have never manged a large, international, rapid pace issue like this. In such a crisis, multiple options are procured and developed concurrently so as not to be caught out. It's called risk management.

The governor originally said the sub wouldn't work. Musk dissed the governor saying he wasn't the expert when in fact everyone was reporting to him and he made the decisions. When Vern said we need the Brit specialists, the governor was quick to approve. Same with all the other international help. How many ThaiVisa experts said that never happens??? The governor did an outstanding job, so when Elon criticized the governor, I wouldn't be surprised if that had an impact on Vern's choice of words.
Why did Musk have to visit the cave and divert resources to get a personal tour by the Thai divers? He had at least 2 top engineers there at least 2 days before his visit. Massive PR stunt that has since failed miserably.
The Tweeter storm shows shows that people are very disgusted with Musk. Almost 3 hours after his first tweets, he posted in effect that Vern started it first. Dude needs to claim that Valium from all his travels caused this "abnormal" posting. His fanboys will swallow that.
Sorry, what you've described is NOT a justification for how crassly Vern handled it. Both men were wrong in their distasteful statements. Musk's was decidedly more crass and personal in nature.

Why pick a fight with a billionaire? What did Vern gain from that? He should have shown some of the class that the British people keep telling us they have, and just let it lie.
Exactly... Contrary to what everyone keeps saying of the typical Brit/English character, he seemed to have reacted crassly telling Elon publicly to shove the sub "where the sun doesn't shine". No reasonable person would say such a thing, not even a reasonably well raised child.

On a serious note, Vern will not win this spat. The unfortunate truth, that many of us farang delude ourselves into rebutting, is that people (especially foreigners) affiliated with Thailand are given a poor reputation globally. Everyone is suspicious of farangs who end up here. And, without judging Vern, his interview (assuming it's not editorialized) lacked tact and potentially sheds some light on his character and education level. Who would tell Elon Musk to "shove it up his #$$"?
Many of us won't accept that Thailand is not well-regarded by outsiders (for mostly good reasons). I avoid telling anyone that I have been based here as not doing so would open me up to unnecessary attacks.

Correct, the continual Thai - basher's should be sorted out and given long-term if not permanent holidays.
Guess most of us are guilty of a bit of banter and argy-bargy, bagging the BIB, ineffective politicians, the lack of rule of law etc. but personnel uncalled for comments, the generalisation of stupidity, thick, useless Thai's is way over the top and shouldn't be tolerated - ever.
But surely generalizations that are positive should be tolerated, right? Or, is each of us to speak only about individual anecdotes? Will make for a fairly boring forum.
Less Western Expats arriving than ever before and a significant fall in working Western expats now in Thailand
in Thailand News Headlines

Easily predicted. Young and old expats come and live and leave for very different reasons.
Thailand is an absolutely horrible for a young expat to work. It gives them nothing in return for their effort. Locals don't have any interest in learning from outsiders and kowtowing to Thai/Chinese bosses for a handful of Baht is hardly worth the subservience.
Thais are more and more anti-foreigner and nobody feels this more than expats who actually work among elite Thais. They simply don't want them here. Period.
