A very sad story IMO. For all of you who question the drastic action taken by the father to support his son, please remember the 1,000 baht fine would be a drastic sum to pay for many poor families throughout Thailand. My condolences go to the elderly gentleman's family and shame on the local police station. May his ghost haunt the local police for their callous behaviour. No further comment from me other than to say I would willingly have paid the son's fine if I had known.

Very much so and thanks. I read this rescue by an elephant and its mahout in yesterday's The Nation. It was an amazing story and, no doubt traumatic for the tourists, was so interesting compared to the usual rubbish about Thai politics, the failing economy, tourist schemes (or should I say "scams"), defamation cases, drug laws and immigration etc. etc. Congratulations must go to the monk, who organised the rescue bid using 1 of 3 elephants he cares for in a nearby sanctuary, and the brave mahout who took his elephant into a torrential river to reach the tourists clinging to bushes near their capsized raft. They all managed to climb onto the elephant's back then taken to safety. Well done rescuers - I will raise a "Chang" to all of you!

Tourists warned after box jellyfish stings near Bamboo Island

Please note, the sea is the natural habit for all jellyfish, not for humans, so expect to be stung!! -
AirAsia operates flights betweeen Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Rai
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Very much so, as I can vouch for when I was a Tourist Police Volunteer based in the city. In complete contrast, it is the "hub" for punters going to Chiang Saen to cross the Mekong to gamble at the extensive Kings Romans casino complex. -
I prefer to do it myself - thanks
Burma Bill replied to Querentino_Spaghettino's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Yes indeed. Here in Siem Reap, Cambodia, draught beers are widely available - none of the "drinking from a bottle" lark! They are inexpensive costing around 50 US cents (17 Thai baht) for a 330ml glass at many bars, especially during "happy hours". I always drink draught Cambodian beers except when I visit Thailand where I have to resort to large bottles of Chang at the cost of 80 baht per large bottle at my usual hotel in Chiang Mai. (Please note, this hotel does not stock small bottles) -

I also have to control blood pressure, being an insulin depedent Type 2 diabetic. For several years now, I take 2 tablets per day - AMLODIPINE 5mg and ANGILOCK 50mg. I have never experienced any adverse effects. Yes, I do get tired of an afternoon especially during the very hot and humid weather, but after a siesta no problems.

When I lived in Thailand as a Tourist Police Volunteer in Khon Kaen, my Captain had a farm and Mulberries were one of his products, not only for the fruit, but also for Mulberry Wine. He used to protect his trees as below: Depending upon the size of your tree, the obvious suggestion would be to cover the tree in bird netting. This can ether be draped over the tree and tied around the trunk, or you could surround the tree in poles and drape the netting over them. (google)

Thailand Prepares for Casino Boom Amid Economic Hopes
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes indeed, BUT as I have said previously, if gambling in casinos becomes legal within Thailand, the Government should ban Thais from participating, allowing only foreigners. For many years now, Thais (as foreigners) have regularly gambled, and still do, at casinos across the border in Burma, Cambodia and Laos, countries which have banned their nationals from gambling in casinos. Thais have always found money somehow to gamble across the border. -
Thailand Prepares for Casino Boom Amid Economic Hopes
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
With respect, not if the casinos are forbiden for entry by Thai people, only foreign punters. Here in Cambodia, all the casinos are barred to Khmer citizens. Only foreigners, whether residents or visitors, can gamble at a legal casino, of which there are many. -
