Latest carmaker to scale back its EV ambitions amid slowing sales
vinny41 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Its not my claim its stated here in this article from "Surot Saengsanit", the new president of the Thai Electric Vehicle Association including calling on the government to take measures to promote EV investment plans in Thailand for export. For example, it is stipulated that new investors who will invest in Thailand must come in the form of joint investment, with Thai companies and Thai supply chains as joint investors of no less than 30% according to the law, including the requirement to use domestic parts as much as possible, because currently only 20% is used https://www.prachachat.net/economy/news-1646266 -

Possibility of acquiring the highly anticipated title of "Thailand origin" For Chinese EV companies to extend their exports beyond the Thai domestic market, leveraging FTAs is crucial, which necessitates meeting a "40% local content" requirement. This is likely to depend on the degree of localisation of battery production, which is estimated to account for one-third of a vehicle's price, and the extent to which Thailand's industrial clusters are utilised. However, in the early stages of production, most of the parts will be imported from China, and it will be difficult to meet these requirements. If the "40% local content" requirement cannot be met, the majority of BEVs produced in Thailand will remain in the domestic market. If there is an oversupply, the entire market will be affected if discount sales become rampant, similar to what happened in China. If a Chinese car meets the 40% local content requirement and is certified as originating from Thailand, it will be exported within and outside the ASEAN region through the ASEAN FTA network. This will lead to direct competition between automobile companies in destination countries and Chinese cars originating in Thailand. In any case, the Asian automotive industry is undergoing a major transition. https://www.thinkchina.sg/economy/made-thailand-chinese-evs-could-fill-auto-market -

Chinese EV manufacturers are facing trade protection measures from European countries, who have erected a tariff wall as high as 38% for imports from China, and Thai automakers should take advantage of the situation, SAIC Motor-CP executive vice president Suroj Sangsnit said on Friday. He said the high tariff wall, as well as the requirement to reveal all technology used in the products in import documents, have forced Chinese automakers to establish manufacturing bases overseas instead. Thailand can use this chance to become a manufacturing base for Chinese EVs to export to Europe, he said, adding that to circumvent the EU trade protection measures, Chinese EVs manufactured in Thailand must contain over 40% locally made parts, so they can be considered as “originated from Thailand”. “Thailand never exports automobiles to Europe, as there has been no trade agreement between the two regions,” he said. “It is estimated that Thailand will face import duties of 10-20% if it starts exporting EVs to Europe.” https://www.nationthailand.com/business/automobile/40040855 The 40% local content is only one of the EU requirments others are has there been forced or slave labour used in the manufacture or any parts have any subsidy been applied as part of the vehicle manufacture or any parts Starting from 18th February 2025 as part of the Battery Regulation Provide a carbon footprint declaration which must be verified by a third party notified body https://www.eura-ag.com/en/blog/eu-battery-regulation-guide-to-calculating-the-co2-footprint not straight forward exporting cars to Europe -

No need to mention ICE vehicles as the topic is EV The only EV brand that does sell used EV's is GWM Certified Pre-Owned It would appear that the EV brands in Thailand are more concerned about lack of EV sales numbers in Thailand than % share they are also hampered that EV's built in Thailand can't be exported due to low domestic content 20% Most FTA require at least 40% or higher local content https://www.prachachat.net/economy/news-1646266 -

Yes they buy them from auctions at rock bottom prices and some of them are listing them at prices higher that what you can get a brand new one for recent article in the media 8 Chinese carmakers aim to propose EV3.0 terms adjustments, the cause of the “EV price war” However, there is an idea to propose to the government to adjust the conditions for compensatory production, where companies participating in the EV 3.0 measure must produce 1.5 times the amount previously imported for sale, because the current market situation is in a severe slowdown. When production in Thailand began, it could not be sold and could not be exported anywhere, resulting in a lot of stock remaining, so prices had to be reduced to clear the products. “Now that the market situation is bad, operators have no choice but to reduce prices because if they join the measure and do not produce, they will be fined, which is more than 500,000-600,000 baht per vehicle. Therefore, it is better to reduce prices rather than being fined. https://autolifethailand.tv/chinese-embassy-ev-price-war/ -

Not anymore there are used car dealerships that have had to close and some have resorted to selling cars at a loss Majority of tents wouldn't touch EV's as they could buy in an EV and then the brand reduces the new car price by upto 50% and almost impossible to obtain finance on used EV's for the same reason -

There is an article on khaosod they have blurred out the logo on the steering wheel but didn't blur out the air vents design so everyone knows what the brand is

No in this case it was an accident lady was driving it start raining hard unable to see what was on the road due to flood water car hit something that pierce a hole in the battery pack driver got home next day started car drove less than a kilometer. A turtle symbol came up about a system failure. The moisture barrier had a problem. The battery icon came up again. Then the steering wheel locked and the car went into a coma.”. https://www.matichon.co.th/local/news_4777754 Case does highlight that if you battery issues and you need to call a tow truck while both the customer and the call centre may opt for the nearest service centre being the cheapest in distance the call centre should advise that the nearest doesn't have the necessary equipment to handle battery removal and should advise customer tow truck should go the nearest service centre that supports battery removal

A hopeless girl's EV car has water damage and the battery is broken. The insurance company has not paid the claim and suggested putting it in the sun. The insurance company said that they will expedite the process. The insurance is the responsibility of the insurance company. Neta Company could not answer much. The company already informed that the battery should be replaced by informing the insurance company, but the insurance company disappeared. They contacted again on August 29. It is also not advisable to expose the battery to sunlight. The battery was damaged by water and short-circuited. There is a high risk of malfunction and danger to customers who will be harmed. https://www.matichon.co.th/local/news_4777754

I don't have an issue with that method majority of pickup sales are already included in R.Y,1 It should be noted just reporting on R.Y.1 will be undereporting of EV sales figures Byd,MG and Aion do have registrations in other dlt vehicle categories Cars in Thailand are divided into 17 types according to the Motor Vehicle Act of 1979 and the Wheel Act of 1930, each with different characteristics and usage patterns. As a result, the annual tax, transfer fees, and documents for the Department of Land Transport are different. Let's get to know the different types of registered cars. Example if a national taxi association placed an order for 50,000 EV's they would go unreported as they would come under R.Y.6 Type 6: Passenger cars for hire carrying no more than 7 people And you need to decide what is the purpose of these reports if it is yearly sales then it should be from 1st February to 31st January If RY6 and RY10 were include in August 2024 figures EV numbers would increase from 6,211 to 6,376

article is incorrect regarding number of ev's sold in 2023 autolife published number of registrations for 2023 as 76,314 and this number doesn't include December sales under EV 3.0 subsidy which ended 31st December 23;59 Data from the Department of Land Transport indicate that the EV market has not been particularly strong since the beginning of the year. January recorded the highest number of registrations for the year at 13,321 units, driven partly by a rush to register before the January 31 deadline to qualify for benefits under the EV promotion plan, EV 3.0, which offers a 2% excise tax and a subsidy of up to 150,000 baht. https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/business/automobile/40039276 totall number of ev sales for 2023 is in the region of 89,000

In the same speech Yu Jingmin mentioned about the S5 model launching in November. This car is a relatively small electric SUV that uses lithium iron phosphate batteries. It will not be possible to fit a solid-state battery in such a model for a long time until 2030 at the earliest. Initially, such batteries will be exclusive to more high-end models and competing against NCM chemistry batteries. Xu Yanhua, Secretary-General of the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, has stated that before 2030 the battery market in China will still be dominated by liquid batteries. https://carnewschina.com/2024/09/04/mg-will-launch-an-ev-with-a-solid-state-battery-in-the-first-half-of-2025-claims-saic/ MG Cyber GTS might be 1st vehicle using solid state battery

As previosly explained before EV's ICE had 100% market share so you only need to sell one EV and the statement that ICE is losing market share would be correct
-
look forward to you providing backup evidence of serious price reductions across all ICE brands trying to reduce their oversupply of stock I haven't seen any evidence to support such a claim as for ICE brands closing their factories that happens all the time when the Brand feels the factory is surplus to requirements it happen to Honda Swindon factory when the EU and Japan agreed a FTA deal

However, the picture regarding sales for the year so far was significantly different. Despite its strong showing in July, BYD only managed to clinch eighth place from January to July, based on sales of 1,714,100. Sales for Geely were significantly lower, at 577,700, with the brand managing eighteenth place overall. Once again, Toyota and Volkswagen were in first and second place, respectively, but Honda came in third for the year so far. https://carnewschina.com/2024/09/04/byd-was-third-best-selling-brand-in-the-world-in-july-this-year/
-
If that is correct we would be seeing serious price reductions across all ICE brands trying to reduce their oversupply of stock but the only serious price reductions are from EV brands Its all down to supply and demand Little demand either reduce production or reduce price if demand exceeds production no need to reduce price
-
You are correct number of Hybrid's registered in August 2024 were 10,915
-
@ExpatOilWorker I get the same numbers as you RY1 41,433 for August 2024 and 6,211 for EV's Market share is 14.99% Looking at autolife figures for 2023 year on year August 2023 EV figures were 6,611 So the industry predictions seem to be correct that 2024 number of EV sold will be less than 2023

Ora canceled White Car and Black Cat small EVs due to losses, despite strong sales For most producers, selling 20,000 cars of a model a month would be seen as a success, but in the case of Ora an EV brand from Great Wall Motor, such sales meant a loss. This was the explanation Dong Yudong, CEO of Ora, gave for the discontinuation of the Black Cat and White Cat small electric hatchbacks over the last couple of years. In an interview, Dong explained the decision and outlined the economics. Although the Ora brand has had monthly sales in the region of 20,000 for the Black Cat and White Cat models, according to Dong, the brand lost 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) with each sale. He says that the monthly loss was more than 200 million yuan (28 million USD) which was unsustainable for the brand. https://carnewschina.com/2024/09/02/ora-canceled-white-car-and-black-cat-small-evs-due-to-losses-despite-strong-sales/

The Article clearly states "BYD, Volkswagen, Toyota and their peers sold 396,000 hybrid cars to mainland buyers in July, or 45.1 per cent of total EV deliveries, according to data published by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Their share increased from 34.3 per cent in the same month last year." https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3276389/cheap-and-efficient-hybrid-cars-gain-favour-china-evs-stoke-range-anxiety

I don't think he provided a breakdown of number of EV vs Hybrid Stronger demand for hybrid vehicles over pure EVs is not peculiar to China. They made up 60 per cent of new EV sales globally in May, according to data by research firm Autovista. Sales of hybrid and fully-electric cars in China make up about 65 per cent of sales globally. https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3276389/cheap-and-efficient-hybrid-cars-gain-favour-china-evs-stoke-range-anxiety

Cheap and efficient: hybrid cars gain favour in China as EVs stoke range anxiety Hybrid cars made up 45.1 per cent of total EV deliveries in mainland China in July, versus 34.3 per cent a year ago, according to industry data Dealers said many buyers turned to hybrid cars on heightened concerns about rapid battery depletion in winter. Video clips showing dozens of EVs stuck in a snowstorm in central Hubei province during the Lunar New Year went viral in February, after their batteries ran out of juice. The incident reinforced fears among car buyers that fully-electric cars are still not reliable for long-haul travel. https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3276389/cheap-and-efficient-hybrid-cars-gain-favour-china-evs-stoke-range-anxiety
