When you tally up the Americans, Australians, and British, alone that is a lot of expats living in Thailand. The Canadians are a bright group of people. I find it hard to believe they won't be looking for greener pastures as well.
The ring leaders introducing these new hurdles for expats living in Thailand, will go down in Thai history as the people who killed the goose that laid the golden egg. By the end of the year, Thai's will clearly see the expat numbers dwindling, as well as their bottom line.
Get real. The Thais don't give a rats arse about us Farang. Our main chance is the incoming Thai Govt will be more reasonable on Visas.

Not known for their movement, I wonder what the Thai idea of "high speed" is? And why does it go to Nakhon Nowhere?... Not the most desirable of destinations
I recall being on a station platform in Holland when the TGV came through. I soon found out why that yellow line is 20 foot back from the platform edge. Damn thing came through at full speed and nearly blew me over before the vacuum behind it nearly sucked me off the platform. I can think of better ways of being sucked off and have been in Thailand ever since.

Marry a western woman and come the divorce she'll almost certainly take you to the cleaners for at least half of everything you've got plus child support plus alimony payments. Unless you have a Pre Nup.
By comparison, due to total lack of responsibility, the average Thai male often simply does a runner. He probably did not register the marriage at the Amphur anyway.
When divorcing, a Thai girl seldom gets anything from her Thai ex husband and is often left bringing up a child alone. Can't see her expecting to get much from a Farang husband either (unless she married him in HIS country).
Bottom line though is get yourself some legal advice.

Welcome to Phi Phi. That's what often happens when one confronts a Thai, he goes to get his friends to help. Our American is lucky to be alive. If they do anything at all, Thai Police will finger some Burmese for the job.
Imagine what would happen if some Farangs beat the crap out of a Thai..... Ah that's different isn't it.

Gentlemen, shall we have some respect for the dead in this case. Poor bloke was already having a difficult life relying on a wheel chair. Takes big balls to ride a bike and get around in a wheelchair when incapacitated.

That has not been correct for almost 2 decades now. My wife owns land.
A friend of mine had to divorce his Thai wife so she could buy property. Though I suspect, this being Thailand, the rule varies from one Amphur to the next.

The can of Sing, as the Thais call it, that I am drinking as I type this is 5% so pretty much the same as other beers. The old Chang was 6.5 % if memory serves me right.
Read my original post... it's not only the alcohol content that causes the mind numbing paralysis displayed by Thais.

The reason Beer Lao is hard to find is that Singha tried to kill it off by telling their distributors they would not get Singha if they also handled Beer Lao.
Thais buy Singha cuz it's strong, so they get drunk for less cost. Then there is their slogan, "my beer my country," which no doubt hits the heart with nationalistic Thais. (They're not nationalistic are they?)
Singha is a chemical beer, (as are many here), contains, among other things, Formaldehyde (no I can't be arsed to check the spelling!). Formaldehyde is the stuff ants have in their bite which paralyses their prey..... which I postulate explains the behaviour of many a Thai! Formaldehyde is also used by morticians to preserve a corpse.... you make your own comments on that one!

I would just leave it for the girl to arrange, (they like arranging marriages), then all you have to do is show up for the ceremony at the temple. You can then register the marriage at the local Amphur office. Then again, there are the Thai men who often don't sign the registry.... easier to do a runner later.
Remember, if she marries a Farang and signs the registry she loses some of her rights as a Thai citizen.... such as, she can no longer buy property.

Amazing Thailand.... where anything can happen. One often sees things flying off poorly laden trucks but this.... Somchai has excelled himself.

Not quite clear what you want here?
Either try the account confirmation doc or try a different branch (they vary).
Failing which, switch bank.

You don't need a lawyer. A foreigner can't buy land in Thailand.
Correct, according to Thai law, but that's exactly why he needs a Thai lawyer... to evade (er... circumvent) the law!
There are many that do buy in a variety of ways as no doubt this thread will lead to. Common way is to register a company. As a Thai juristic entity the company can legally buy land or house. The foreigner can own only 49% of the company. There have to be a minimum of seven shareholders but only one has a voting share.... You know who!
Another way is to buy it in a Thai name and lease it from said Thai with a clause in the lease which states the Thai may not sell the property whilst you hold the lease. One has to trust the Thai not to have your head blown off!
Better not put it into a Thai name as one cannot control the outcome. Golden rule, whatever you do, control the ownership.
There will now follow a slew of replies.
P.S. Does anyone know if the same applies in Da Phil's?

he/she must be honest
The words 'lawyer' and 'must be honest' are usually mutually exclusive. Have heard too many stories of folk buying property and having problems. I need a good one in the Phuket area for similar reasons.... Can anyone recommend?
Definition of lawyer.... One skilled in evasion of the law.

If you have BP problems Viagra can affect this, so I would suggest asking a doctor before taking it. And if you must use it try a quarter tablet first.
I knew of another guy, grossly overweight and having heart problems. The doc' said he might not live too much longer. One Viagra + one girl = heart attack. He came and he went!

Yet another post full of self important <deleted> !! Expats really need to get it into their heads you are nowhere near as important as you think you are,
leaving is always an option if it gets too much ....
Like I said, I speak as I find. I'll give you an example of Thai responsibility. When they stole my motorcycle, I was told it was MY responsibility to ensure they did not take it. So I feel inclined to respond in kind and don't feel sorry for the Thai when, for once, they got shafted by a Farang.
As for expats thinking they are important, I never inferred this, however, we deserve at least equal fair treatment and are not getting it.

Farangs are already paying double, so how is it they think we have not paid enough already? And how long before they link health and insurance with visa? There comes a point where the pleasure isn’t worth the pain and one leaves.
Money and medicine are a bad mix, which is why the UK NHS is so wonderful. By comparison, listed on the stock exchange, Bumrungrad is a business first and a hospital last. The only part of a Thai hospital you can guarantee to be efficient and capable is the cashier. And no, I’m not bashing the Thais, I merely speak as I find.
I would not mind if we got quality care and were not charged double what the Thais pay. If they want money then they must provide quality care and be responsible for their malpractice (which is common here). Must the man who received inept / poor care pay for it?
I can’t wait to see this so called “cheap” insurance policy. If they are going to instate compulsory insurance it’s probably a good thing, but is the insurance company expected to cover Farang double price hospital fees? In which case you can bet Farang insurance will cost double. And what about those who are too old, or have pre existing medical conditions that bar them from getting insurance?
I think medical insurance is a good thing but it needs handling right, and as we all know, this lot couldn’t organize a piss up in a pub.
As for leaving without paying…. Why did they let him out without paying? It is the hospital’s responsibility to ensure their patient has paid.
The noose is tightening. I foresee the point coming where old or sick Farang cannot get insurance or hospital care or visa. So how are we expected to invest or retire here in such circumstances?
We can post all we like here… all to no effect. Time we Farang had a means of petitioning the Thai Govt / Ministry of Health / Immigration etc for fair treatment. Can anyone on Thai Visa arrange?

After being ripped off by a hospital in Khon Kaen over a long period for 3 operations for the same thing and finally going home and getting the problem fixed in 2 weeks and no operation was needed. I have had enough and I am going home for good where medical care is soo much better and soo much cheaper.!!!
Are we supposed to pay for their malpractice? It is just a matter of time before they turn the screw too far and we all leave.

It's people who skip out without fulfilling their obligations that make life increasingly difficult for those of us who live responsibly.
True, but there have been too many cases of malpractice where the Thai hospital made a mess of the job and expected the Farang to pay double Thai prices. And of course, this being Thailand, no responsibility!

It has also discussed with various organisations about offering foreign visitors cheap travel insurance.
What do they call cheap? And what about two tier pricing? Tired of being ripped off, this thread is going to run and run!

Well, we knew it was coming, but not what it is going to cost us? And will everyone be able to get it, even if old and sick already? How long before they link this as a mandatory Visa requirement? I don't mind if we get the same prices as Thais (some chance!)

How many times have we seen this before? Farang looks for diamond in bucket of Asian shit and wonders why he is not finding? He expects to find a good girl in a bar and not pay for it.
Get with it. Whether she's good or bad, woman will always cost you money. All men are slaves to their dicks. Girls know it and it has cost man ever since.
Usually when the money runs out the girl runs out, so you can test em this way. However, there are notable exceptions to the rule so explain you really like her and give her a chance.
See it from her point of view. What would you do if you were a poor Thai girl from Issarn?

European alternatives to Thailand
in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Posted
Thailand certainly isn't what it used to be and we have seen the best of it. However, wherever you go there is the serious possibility of reverse culture shock after this looney place.
I am staying in Thailand for now, but studying alternatives as a back up if the Visa / health insurance problem kicks in.
Europe does not appeal to anyone suffering from Cockitis who likes Oriental girls. Nuff said.
