If there is a negotiated settlement maybe the western portion of Ukraine including Kyiv and Lviv can become a part of NATO and gain protection. Even if some miracle happens and Ukraine somehow regain all of their territory back they have inherited a house that his a tear down. So cut the cancer off and put resources in the healthy part. Otherwise many people are going to freeze and starve this winter fighting for land they don't have the resources to fix.
