Thanks!  I still don't quite understand it's purpose.  You plug it into a device that already has an internet connection and it creates a wifi hotspot?

Good luck fixing the numerous footbridge 'solutions', this one on Withayu junction with Pleonchit.

I often think about everyone responsible for that, especially the designer of that buildings landscape architecture. They've actually created something that forces pedestrians into one of the busiest intersections in the city and will eventually kill someone if it hasn't already.

It is more and more enforced. Because residents like me, who live in a condominium, don't want tourists which should stay in hotels.

Our condominium management and security doesn't enforce the rules all the time, but they get better at it, because more and more of the people who actually live there complain.

And that is a trend all over the world.

The condo management not allowing short term rentals is a civil law issue not a criminal law issue.  I am saying that the regulation/law against short term rentals is not being enforced.  Nobody (with a couple high profile exceptions) is getting arrested for short term rentals, although they may face fines or other contractual remedies from the condo management.

As far as I know staying in condominiums for less than 30 days is illegal - it doesn't matter how it is booked.

It is not illegal to stay in a condo under 30 days although it may be illegal but is almost completely unenforced to own and rent out a condominium for under 30 days.

So using Airbnb to find a place to stay for any period of time is completely and absolutely legal.

Using Airbnb to find people to stay in your property may be illegal, but it is not enforced.

I actually think the easiest solution would be to have your new faculty added to the existing work permit. Talk to the local Labour Office to see if this is possible (Immigration is not involved in this process).

If the Labour office nixes the idea of adding the new faculty to the existing work permit, the recommended process is:

    1. Get a termination letter from the faculty giving a final date of work at least two weeks in the future.
    2. Apply for the new work permit with the termination letter and the necessary documents from the new faculty.
    3. Visit Immigration to cancel the existing permission to stay to take effect on the date specified in the termination letter.
    4. With the new work permit, (and other necessary documents) visit Immigration to get the new extension of your permission to stay.

It would be prudent to visit both the Labour Office and your local Immigration Office in advance to explain your plans and ensure there are no unexpected wrinkles that you need to deal with.

If the two faculties use different campuses in different provinces, this may become more complicated.

Adding the faculty to the existing work permit is a great idea!  Hope it can be done. And thanks for the other information.  They are competent and will surely work out how to do it, but maybe my convenience would not be at the top of the list of considerations.  ????

  6. I work at Thammasat and I am switching faculties within Thammasat and signing a new contract.  This will mean canceling my work permit from the old faculty and doing a new one with the new faculty.  I am not sure if they understand the process.  I am assuming this means cancelling my visa extension and doing a visa extension new also?  My current extension expires in June and the new contract with the new faculty will run until October.

    Is this correct?

    1. Cancel work permit with old faculty at the labor office and on the same day  go to immigration, cancel visa extension and get new visa extension until the end of the new contract.

    2.  Then go to immigration to apply for a new work permit.

They will prepare all documents for me, but previously told me I should cancel the old work permit first and then apply for the new one within 21 days, which sounded seriously wrong to me.

    Thanks.

  7. A few years ago I lived in the center of Bangkok on the 6th floor of a condo surrounded by other high rise condos.  The security guards at the condo next door started keeping roosters (I don't know why...).  They woke me up every morning starting at around 4 am.  I complained to the management of their building.  Ignored.  I complained to the management of my building.  They patiently and condescendingly explained to me that Thai people like to hear roosters in the morning because it reminds them of living in the country.

  9. The reason woke has become political is because one political party in the USA does not want you talking about things like military spending or income inequality, or subsidizing corporate employees with food stamps because they are not paid a living wage or tax policy that benefits the wealthiest in the country.  Etc. Etc. Etc.  It's a problem created as a distraction. Yeah there are some people that are extreme. Just let it be.

Apartment buildings, and other landlords with at least five units, have been required to charge no more than the government rate (plus a maximum 25% service fee) for several years now. While some of them may still be trying to gouge tenants, it's hard for them to stay under the radar if people start complaining.

It's not being enforced.  At all.  Never.  Nowhere.  Sadly.

  11. http://langhub.com/en-th/thai-expat-news/483-thai-rock-star-convicted-of-statutory-rape#:~:text=Bangkok's Criminal Court on Wednesday, pleaded guilty of the charge.

I had to Google Big Ass Rape to find this old story.  I can't unsee it....

Anyway, the compound offense is not exactly statutory rape, as the article says.  I'm sure the law has been used a few times to force the guy to marry the girl he got pregnant.  It's an old law and by the way, it doesn't go both ways.  Only men can prosecuted.  A compoundable offense means that the decision to prosecute is up to the
    victim, not the public prosecutor.

  12. Grab really annoys me with their pretense of marketing to English speakers.  A little bit is in English and now most menu items are Google translated but most information and help is in Thai.  (I know I live in Thailand, but thanks for the pointing that out!)

It's hard to understand why they don't hire a couple of translators to make the experience farang friendlier, but they have clearly done a cost/benefit analysis and decided it just ain't worth it.
