  1. Where is the 3D cinema in BKK, have been there couple of years ago, very impressed and did like it.

    Area and street please.

    Thanks!

    Gerd

Saw one in Siam Square last week, pretty certain it was at the Paragon shopping centre, right by BTS Siam Square. If not, it might have been Central World, which can be reached from the same station.

  2. Thanks JxP,

    Loads of useful information there.

Didn't find the one answer I was looking for though. How to get to Vientianne from Chiang Mai by bus or train?

    Should I re-word it to -

Can you get to V from CM by bus or train?

seeing as the only mention was plane travel, which I would prefer to avoid.

Anyway, thanks again for the response,

    TD

  3. Need to go get a new visa. Figured I would stay in Vientianne a few days.

    Figured someone here would know...

Are their busses or trains from Chiang Mai? Is it easier to go on an organised run?

Also, any tips on guesthouses/bars/etc in Vientianne would be well appreciated, its my first time.

    Thanks,

    TD

  4. Thinking about spending a week or so working my way from Phitsanulok through into Isaan, then coming back to Bangkok.

Just after any tips of where and how to spend time.

Mainly interested in having a laugh, so areas with fun restaurants/bars etc are welcome suggestions.

Actually I dont know much about Issan at all, so any suggestions are welcome.

    Cheers.

  5. I am currently learning Japanese in bkk.

however, I'd like to find a group or place to practice conversation/speaking outside my classroom.

    any ideas?

    thanks!!

    Hi,

I know a group of Japanese and other Japanese speakers who meet a couple of times a month in Bangkok.

Not sure when the next one is, PM me if you are interested.

  6. A friend of mine quoted these prices for living in Bangkok. Are these ballpark figures or are they not realistic at all?

    5500 rent

    2000 utilities

    10,000 food

    1500 internet

    5000 nightlife

    3000 transportation

    totaling 27,000 baht/mo

    Joe

If you take the time to look around you can get a decent place for less than 5500.

I stay 5 minutes from the MRT line (15 mins to Sukhumvit for example) in a clean, safe, spacious (huge balcony), fully furnished (all new) apartment with a lovely well maintained pool, where there is 1 other farang that i know of, and it costs 4500B a month. It is not a slum or a dive. All the people I have met there are Thai professionals and families.

I find I can live exactly the way I want while working legally (probably average farang teacher wages) and still have a few baht left at the end of the month if i'm lucky. I pay less per month for all the things you listed except... nightlife...probably more in the region of 15,000 a month!

  7. For the purposes of the poll, the police checks are NOT the ones which many of the upper-tier schools require simply for the benefit of their own records (though the two may be the same actual piece of paperwork)but checks required by the THAI GOVERNMENT for the purpose of acquiring a non-immigrant "B" class visa for the purpose of applying for a teacher's license and work permit to be employed as a teacher in Thailand.

I finished one term (as a legit / qualified teacher) went back home, got a new NIB visa no problem, and upon returning was requested to get the police clearance for the WP, no mention from the employers yet of the teachers license, or what is required for it. It didn't seem that the doc was needed for the actual visa.

(cost of police doc. was 10GBP and took about 40 days to process)

  8. In the case of a native Japanese speaker (qualified teacher of English, though not Japanese) in Bkk, what would be considered a fair price to pay for individual, tailored tuition in Japanese, in your own house, at times specified by you?

Would 800 Baht (including travel expenses, around 150B for return journey) for 2 hours seem too much to ask? (It doesn't to me, but I'm biased :o )

    Just curious. Any thoughts?

  9. good timing for me as Ive been asking where I can buy a drum set ( kit ) in BKK. No one I talk to here knows. Anyone have suggestion?

    Thanks!

Sure I saw a kit in a music shop (shops 79-81 on the store guide) on the basement floor of the complex that hosts Tesco Lotus and that I.T. labyrinth right outside Thai Cultural Centre MRT.

  10. A few days ago, in a very quiet town up north, I entered for the first time my local Chinese medicine store. Armed with very rudimentary Thai and a note written in Thai by a friend, I attempted to convey that after a heavy 4 week trip back to England and coming back just in time for Songkran, I was a physical wreck, off the sauce and needed something to cleanse my liver and bits and help me sleep.

Before I could finish my garbled effort, a kind lady beside me started speaking to me in English and helping me out. A bag of pills was produced to 'help me drink' and to be taken 'after drunk'. I explained this won't be happening for a while and showed her my trembling hands. Anyway, we laughed and she then told the store guy that I needed some help sleeping. So he produced another bottle of pills. Happy to come away with quite an unusual purchase that required such little effort, I felt pretty pleased with myself.

Before returning it to me, the lady read my note again, laughing, and asked if it was about me. Obviously it was (that'll teach me to trust my Thai mates to write notes of this kind for me! ;o) ). I didn't know exactly what it said, but could take a good guess, so, pretty embarassed and feeling like a skanky drunken miscreant, I tried to slide out of there with a few words of thanks, but she grabbed me and...this is why I love Thailand...shoved a bussiness card in my hand and offered me a teaching job in her school! hah hah hah!

It just seemed like such a preposterous situation (even more so as it's probably not even uncommon here) that I thought I would share it.

  11. Hey,

Wasn't sure wether to put this in the airport forum or not, but figured TVusers here would know for sure, sorry if it's in the wrong one...

Just wondering if it's possible, and how to get a bus from BKK SVB airport to Pattaya (about 5pm Wed), or if not, what would people who have done the journey before think might be a *typical* :o fare to pay in a taxi (SVB airport>soi bukhao)? Yeah, the latter part of that question pretty much seems ridonkulous to me too!

Also, I heard that Songkran is celebrated on the 19th in Pattaya, is that right?

    Have a good one.

    Cheers,

    TD

  12. Hi!

I would like to learn japanese (or korean) as a beginner. in a private school or private teacher.

Any advice about where to find that?

    thank you !

    Hey there,

Can't help with the Korean, but as for learing Japanese, my GF is moving over to BKK in about 4 weeks and I'm sure she would be willing to give private tuition. Or if you aren't fussed about learning from a native speaker, I could help you out myself.

    Drop me a PM!

  13. I have known her for over 5 years, lived with her (in Japan) for 3 of those, been to her school on a number of occassions, I think I can say I know her pretty well. She is not lying to me.
You say she is currently an English teacher at a private language school, i presume then she is not living in Japan as you also stated she does not have a degree? If she is in Japan and telling you she is working as a teacher without a degree then she is lying to you.

In that case, if you realy love her, i can only suggest you tell her to stay in her job in Japan as she will never get another one like it without a university degree.

P.S. Are you sure she is not a teachers assistant rather than a teacher?

The job is stifling her. She's been wanting to leave for ages but until now, hasn't been able to. She's not looking for a better job, just a change, a break, and a getaway from the Japanese work ethic.

Yeah she is the head teacher in her ken.

  15. Hi all,

My Japanese partner will be joining me in BKK in a couple of months, just wondered if there are any Japanese users on ThaiVisa (or anyone else) who may know anything about Japanese working in BKK (opportunities/visa issues/etc)? No specific questions really, just after any general tips.

She is currently an English teacher at a private language school and has been the head of her prefecture for over a year. She is fluent in English, fabulous with people, especially children and was a model for some time back in the UK and Japan. Although she has many skills and talents, she doesn't have a degree.

I'm also hoping she will have opportunities for making friends and contacts, especially with some fellow Japanese. So if anyone out there is in a similiar boat, please drop me a line!

(I haven't moved down to BKK yet myself, otherwise I might already have some answers to these questions... :o )

    Cheers.

  16. Can hear the laughter already, but looking for an apartment to rent anywhere near the Metro for no more than 5000B a month (obviously not looking for anything fancy!), I know there are some out there as I've seen a few on the net (www.mmroomfinder.com good for anyone else looking for a place), but wondered if anyone has any advice/resources to share? I'm not in BKK right now, so I can't look around in person.

I believe I'm getting 'stationed' in the Huaykwang area.

In case you're about to write a sarcastic/mocking reply, please don't bother, cheers.
