  1. Hi,

I want to buy a new laptop next month for about 35,000B and have been looking at Acers in Bangkok.

Don't need anything amazing, just the best I can get for my money, will be using it for the usual stuff (net, office, photo editing, multi media, etc), nothing too heavy. I haven't really heard any good or bad comments about Acers, anybody here got any experience?

Also, if I act fast I have the option of having a friend pick one up in Tokyo and bring it over, but from the little I have seen online (www.kakaku.com) they don't seem to be much cheaper, and I figure it would be easier just to get one here.

Any advice appreciated. Also any particularly good or bad shops in Panthip, Fortune or Central?

    Cheers.

  2. There is a gym that is hardly ever used as all the guys just go there to use the steam room and the dark rooms at a Gay Sauna at Phrakanong Soi 42. Entrance fee including lockers and towels is only 90 baht ! :o

Couldn't find it, does it exist or was that just a ploy to get a laugh at the expense of a straight farang wondering round bangkok looking for a gay sauna? LOL

Do you have a name or directions? I found the Bangkok Sports Club on 42, but no gym there.

  3. Soi Klang Racquet Club on Sukhumvit Soi 49 is excellent value. They have two lap pools, a decent weight room, tennis courts, badminton courts, racquet ball courts, etc, etc, and are just about to open a rock climbing area. The yearly fee is 15 thousand, but it has to be paid in full.

I find it to be a comfortable place to work out, and comparatively speaking, a good price.

Thanks for the tip,I will take a look there also.

The Muay Thai gym I referred to in earlier is called Taniguchi Gym and also has a branch called Sakura gym on Soi 33. It seems they only do 'real' Muay Thai training at these gyms on the weekend though with aerobic boxing during the week. I have a bit more info on them if anyone is interested. Will post after I have tried it out.

    Please supply details!

    Taniguchi Gym -

Tues, Wed, Fri 9.30-11.00 Aerobic Muay Thai

Sat, Sun 9.00-10.30 and 10.30-12.00 Muay Thai

Aerobic Muay Thai 200B / Muay Thai 300B for adults, 200B for kids.

    Suk. Soi 49/6

    Sakura Gym

    Wed 5-6.30 , Fri 6-7.30 Sat 1.00-2.30

2000B a month, 5500 for 3 months, 500B one time membership fee, 1500B for equipment, shorts, t shirts, glove, ankle guards) 350/time (whatever that means)

suk soi 33/1 opposite blockbuster video 4th floor

That could be just the piece of info that might save me 31K! (1 year membership for ChiroGym on Thong Lo)

Thanks heaps! I will check it out.

  6. A meditation retreat is a great opportunity to learn a technique which will improve every area of your life. I have never attended any in BKK, but know there are many.

Thanks all, for so many responses.

I have had a few big changes in life recently, changed my job, now working 12 hour days M-F, so that has completely ruled out weekday drinking, not that I ever did much anyway.

I am also moving apartment to an unfamiliar area this week, where I don't now anybody and there are no bars around.

Once I have settle in, I hope to take up yoga and get back in the gym, if I ever find the time...I would also like to return to karate or try Muay Thai, but I have to get back in shape first.

I like the idea of meditation courses a lot too.

Weekends away, I do a lot but usually end up making more of a mess of myself than i would if I stayed in the city. Not passing the buck, but the company I choose to keep doesn't help a lot.

My g/f is teetotal and I sometimes think by spending time with her I wouldn't feel any need to drink, but she lives 9 hours away and works weekends.

Having said that, I like the idea of hanging out with other women to keep myself in check, however, figuring out where to meet likely candidates for that is probably something best saved for another thread!

After an experience I had recently in Laos, I decided to try AA meetings when I got back here. Again, something I will do when I can fit it in...yes, I do kind of feel like I'm making excuses...

  7. My mates a session drummer, he got us into a gig where he supported the Fun Lovin' Criminals at the Brighton Centre. After the gig we went to the party at a club down the street, there was a huge queue and some even huger bouncers at the front. As we had passes on we just strolled past the crowd to get in, but the bouncers weren't having any of it. After about 20 minutes of standing in place, Huey, the legend, rocked up and said to the bouncers, "Hey, if these guys ain't comin' in, I ain't comin' in." So, then we just walked in, passed the people at the front of the queue which hadn't moved, and the confused security guys.

We hung out with the 3 guys from the fun lovin criminals all night, I think fatboy slim (Norman Cook) was probably there too. Clearest memory is Huey not removing his sunglasses all night, but some girl removing his baseball cap and doing a runner with it.

Have also met Hexstatic, DJ Krush, DJ FOOD, oh, and David Prowes <SP> (Darth Vader) was my god-parents next-door neighbour when I was a kid. Yeah, I bugged the hel_l out of him.

  8. Been reading some great advice on this forum, thanks.

When I try and think of something else to do on weekend nights, other than go out boozing at the bars, I get a vaguely panicky sensation. I think it's just cos that's all I have done for so long, I don't know how to fill the void that I feel will be left by not drinking.

Going out with friends (who, to the last man, drink) and staying sober doesn't seem like a fun option, though it may be a learning experience, but I just can't think of anything else to do....

    Anybody have any suggestions?

<central Bangkok, no family, no friends who don't drink>

  9. A company I am working with asked me to ask around for an artist to paint murals on 2 walls of a small study room for young learners of English.

Theme ideas they had were for a beach/mountain scene, with all things labeled in English, etc. But I think they are looking for design input from the artist.

Looking for big, bold, colourful and fun.

I am not sure, but think they would like the work done in early April.

Can provide more details upon request. Please PM if interested.

    Office is in Thong Lo.

    Thanks,

    TD

  10. Hi Guys,

Not sure if this the right forum but I thought you might have some local knowldge.

I am moving lock, stock and barrel from my house in Pin klao/Bang Yai borders to Ubon Ratchatani on the 20th March. I don't need a massive truck just something a bit bigger than a standard pick up truck - big enough for TV, Fridge freezer, sofa beds and Table and chairs plus assorted junk - (perhaps I do need a slightly larger than average truck!)

I have asked around locally and they either act like they're doing me a favour or quote some ridiculous price - never thought it would be this hard.

Does anyone know of a reliable firm who could fulfill this relatively straightforward task? I'm not expecting anyone to do it for nothing but 15,000 - 18,000 bht for a trip to Ubon seems a bit steep even for farang who have money too much, i could almost buy a truck for that or at least hire one.

Any replies, tel no's much appreciated.

    cheers

    Richie

This is a number i jotted down from an ad by my condo, dont know where the guy is based or any other info, but may be worth a try...

  11. hi,

i have been searching the net for a fix to the following problem, but not having much joy, thought i would try here.

have a dell notebook running win xp pro. i wanted to install kaspersky AV the other day, so i removed avast, but then couldnt install k/av from the cd due to a security error. i tired unsuccessfully to d/l it, at this point with no a/v running. also d/l'ed some windows updates.

i then went to turn it on the following day and just as it looks like windows is about to start (but before desktop is visible) it gets a popup error, "sytem process c:windows system 32 lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with code 1073741819" then it shuts down automatically.

this happens everytime, also happens in safe mode. have tried everything i can think of, which is not a lot.

tried running mcaffee a/v from a bootable cd, but the database was 10 months old and didnt find anything.

as i cant get into windows, i cant install or run any other virus or spyware programs.

i have downloaded a few patches etc i have found online, but wont be able to apply them if i cant get into windows.

the online help i have found doenst help much and is a bit too techy for me to deal with, also seems others with a similar problem can still get into windows in safe mode.

does anyone have any clue what i can do???

    panthip or fortune city?

    any help much appreciated, cheers

You can try to do and Repair-Installation of XP! But for that you need the same CD you was using to install the system.

If you have that CD do the following

    1. Boot from CD

    2. Just hit the ENTER Key until you reach the EULA Screen where you need to press F8 to accept the License.

    3. After the EULA Screen ther should be the option of Repair by hit the R key

    4. Hit the R key and let windows start the Repair.

This Repair will keep ALL data, settings and Drivers so you don't need to be worry.

If that Screen didn't appears, some of your systemfiles in the MBR is damaged and you need a new and clean install.

    Check it out.

    Cheers.

thanks, but unfortunately i no longer have the cd :o

If you've a legit CD-Key, there shouldn't be any problem! May you need to contact DELL service if the CD-Key is a DELL Key. But DELL should have the required CD if that is the case.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Raimon,

Took a while but managed to locate the CD and get it fixed!

    Cheers, I was worried there.

p.s. typo in thread title, should read lsass.exe

  14. There are places to be found in the Huay Khwang and Sutthisan areas that might fulfill your friends needs.

For that kind of price, he should go out looking around 10-15 minutes walk from the MRT stations in those areas.

Those kind of places do exist. i think the best way is just to go 'door to door' asking at each condo/apartment complex. There are big clusters of them in both of those areas.

Never tried looking anywhere else though. good luck to him.

  15. i think some kind of allergy must be the answer.

it's weird that it just started in asia, never even had it when i have been back home, that i remember, and working in a bar, i drank a lot before i came out here.

looked at some pics online, sure its none of the above mentioned conditions (f/b herpes etc!)

drank quite a lot at the weekend, slowly, only beer, and didnt get it at all.

yep, the last time i had a long island iced tea, the burn wasnt far behind it!

agree that moderation and hydration will probably sort it out.

the longest it's ever lasted is maybe 2 hours, sorry if my first post wasnt clear, if it lasted 2/3 days, i would be a bit more worried!

    thanks for the responses everyone

  16. Dehydration.....when you have the shower the skin absorbs the water and rehydrates...I would worry that it went on its own accord in that situation. Probably find that you sweat more when drinking in the hot climate....surprised you dont get it around the groin area. Try drinking some water during the drinking sessions to keep your fluid levels up.

Cheers, well, I'll experiment with more water and see if that helps.

I don't sweat a lot and have never had the rash above my navel, so I dont think sweat is the cause, could be to do with the heat though, for sure.

    Ta

  17. Sometimes I get a bright red rash (not itchy or raised, but feels hot) after drinking a lot, usually for 2 or 3 days on the trot.

Starts on neck or face and covers chest, back and shoulders.

Doesn't seem to make much difference when or what I drink, but spirits cause it most often.

Has only started since I came to Asia, a little over 4 years ago. I'm 28 now.

Having a long ice cold shower nearly always gets rid of it but is not very convenient. I drank through it once without going for a shower at new year, and it went of its own accord after a few hours, I think...

Im guessing it could be due to dehydration/heat, but anyone else get it?

I have never seen anyone, outside of a Japanese izakaya, that look like they get it, and I don't know why it would just start so suddenly...

...abstinence is not an option !

  18. Always a question that's shot down when i see it posted by newbs coming to Thailand, but, I gotta ask it...will be changing my Baht to dollars tomorrow, but have no idea how much will be adequate (will have baht in reserve of course)...

male, young-ish, going from 29th-1st by plane (have passport photos and cash for visa, anything else i should know?), expect (hope) to spend 10-15$ a night on a room (not really fussy about quality), probably triple that on drinking, and whatever the going rate is on additional recreation - no travel/tours, maybe guns, no gambling, food i suppose, and other foolish pursuits of happiness, perhaps. Expect to blow out a bit cos of the season, if I were in Bangkok, would probably get through around 10K I would imagine.

figured there would be some people on here who have some rough answers, please dont bother wasting your own time replying with further questions just to make me look like a twot unless i have blatantly left something out from the details above, I tried not to.

Oh, and any specific guesthouse recommendations would be more than welcome.

Cheers, any help appreciated, and happy new year to all!
