  1. Might not go down very well, but just curious...

Although this worn out topic seems to come up all the time, I just want to know without going into the rights and wrongs etc, if anyone else finds reading about this practice as sickening as me.

Nothing personal to those who have posted previously on the topic.

I hope you get sick from being sickened by farangs or any man giving money to his girlfriend. :-)

Why would it bother you? Should they give to you instead? Are you a teacher?

There are so many variables determining whether or not giving money is the right thing do. Each to his own. Intolerance is bad enough already in this world. Grow up!

    :o

  2. What a dumb poll :o

What does it matter to you?

    Worthy post there mate.

Well, as it happens, I am simply curious.

For example, nobody I know here in Thailand would ever dream of giving girls money the way I read about here sometimes (I am not talking about just paying for odd and ends here and there, come on). Maybe as they are mainly young and good looking? Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I was wondering what most of the TV users views are about the posts they read, that's all.

I don't see how most the stories you find here relate to, for example, a UK FAMILY IN THE 1950's, with a bread winning father who supports HIS OWN FAMILY, though someone found that heartwarming story somehow relevant. Not even in the same ballpark if you ask me. Maybe I'm mental, excuse me.

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I don't mind the practice at all, we have had loads of great nights out with lovely girls who are only to happy to pay for big nights out through these means. Keep it up as far as I am concerned.

  3. So we'll tell the story one more time:

When I was a lad some fifty years ago my Dad used to give my Mum money each week to pay for groceries and the like, it was a practice that was repeated throughout the UK where the man was the bread winner and the female looked after the home and perhaps even took care of children. That process of the man giving the woman money didn't sicken me so why should a similar process sicken me today, you f***ing idiot!

Bit strong that, isn't it mate?

I wasn't talking about the process of handing over cash to a loved one. If you actually read the poll question, I wasn't referring to the practice/idea itself, rather the posts concerned with it.

  4. It don't sicken me at all, why would it ?

You've probably got guys spending 300 Pounds per month on cigarettes having a coughing fit cos some guy send his GF in Thailand 300 Pounds per month.

You probably have Teachers in Thailand struggling to pay their rent who are jealous of the Thai women who get people sending them money,

Then you have the poor Farangs in Thailand who have pissed all their money up the wall and are now really struggling who are also jealous of Thai women recieving money, secretly wishing someone would find them desirable enough to send money, knowing deep down that just ain't gonna happen.

I like that many Farangs send money to Thai women, shows that not all are self centered misers who only think of themselves.

Good points there Maigo6. Wasn't meant to be a discussion as its been done before, but cheers anyway.

By the way, no i'm not skint.....for the time being at least!

  5. Hello all!

I just got a conditionnal offer from Media Kids. They place teachers in public schools throughout Thailand, in primary or secondary school, from urban settings to rural villages. I consider the pay to be decent, plus the accomodation is provided, as well as the visa and the WP.

I would be teaching 22-24 hours a week but would stay at school 8am - 4.30pm. No evening or week-end classes, one 1-day english camp per semester.

I've read some bad and good short comments on forums but nothing detailed. I got a "they exhaust the teachers" without further explanation, but don't see how it could be so, as they place the teacher but are not the one supervising them.

So here are my questions :

    - Have you ever dealt with MediaKids and what would be your insights and feelings about them ? (remember the "naming and shaming" rule of this forum >> pm me if you have a really negative comment plz)

    - Do you think a "22-24 hours a week" workload would be enough to exhaust a teacher ? Tire, ok, but exhaust ?

Just for information, I'm French, with a BA (and the TEFL is due in March) with a part-time one-year experience. So I'm pretty happy nonetheless with their offer. Would just love some more information before pulling the trigger :o Thanks a lot !

I worked for MK years ago.

I am sure I never did more than 16 hours teaching a week. It depends where they place you. Some people I know did barely 6 hours a week.

At the time, they were very good about getting documentation sorted.

Accommodation will probably be very basic but livable (again all depends on your placement).

From what I have heard, all the Thai workers that worked there and knew and cared what they were doing have left and been replaced by muppets.

If you are teaching 24 hours a week in classrooms with no AC, along with all the planning and other stuff, you will probably be pretty tired.

Plus, MK expect you to do gate duty and things like that, which is OK at first, but gets old real quick.

Having done a lot since then, I look back on the school they placed me at as the best I have worked in in Thailand, the most easy going and low stress job I have had too. A lot depends on where you end up!

    Good luck!

  6. Big Echo, Japanese private room style, one on Asoke, one on Wireless.

    Thank you for your response.

What is the price-level per hour, between the finger and thumb, and is the song collection decent?

ummm, last time I went a room for 4 people was 400B an hour, not sure of the other pricing options, I think there are many.

the song collection is the best I have seen in Thailand, quite a good range.

  7. Have a friends birthday coming up and he has expressed a wish to go to a karaoke place. I have been to a few here (including Karaoke City) and most of them suffer, in various degrees of a weak selection of songs in English and a very-very broad selection of songs in Chinese and Thai.

So, looking for a karaoke place, with private rooms (not Chinese-style with a big scene) with several mic's for group-singing if wanted. Song-selections in English for guys that doesn't have boyband voices (we cannot reach any high C's). Decent prices on food and drinks is a bonus.

    Any suggestions?

  8. I am going through the same thing at the moment.

I have made copies of my Thai bank account, 2 UK accounts, and my fathers bank account as well as copies of everything else I thought might be useful (must be over 30 pages by now!)

I still am not sure about this issue:

Does my girlfriend need to show a sizeable sum in her bank account? If for example, she has 20K in there now, would it be wise to copy the book at that point or transfer 150K (a figure i have heard suggested) into her account and then show her book? That seems a bit suss to me...

    Cheers.

  9. Do you exercise in the morning?

    Try switching to the evening.

I've found that I suffer much less stress than I used to and also sleep much better and most importantly drink much less. I must admit I now work out first thing and again about 6pm.

Alcohol will actually increase your stress levels when you are not pissed.

    Cheers

    Just as an update...

Well, I work out in the gym when I can (usually mid-day), but never any time for much before work or after (12 hour work days, not a job that can be done by telecommuting).

I would love to find the term to learn meditation techniques or Tai Chi, maybe next year...

I started taking high dosage vitamins, stopped drinking booze, and have reformatted my work system/got a helper in.

This has helped a lot...things are working out at the moment.

    Cheers.

  10. I just got a reply from a message i sent my friend....

    1. "Her room is opposite of Au bon pan . You know the cafe and bakery "Au bon pan" right? You can see a yellow building and her room is 3rd floor. I've heard she collects sheets, towels, shoes, magazines, papers which the other side is white, means recycle paper, bags and paper bags with handles. I'll ask her if she collects books. Tomorrow, the charity is holding at the grand villa 1st floor on the opposite side Ariston Hotel on Sukunvit Soi 24. The time is from 9.00 to 12.30. Your friend can go and give things to them only tomorrow. When he / she can't go, can bring things into her room. I'm going to her room this friday around 10.30"

That tomorrow means today, sorry i didnt check my mail last night.

2 "Hi, Tom. Well I called and asked her about collecting, but she doesn't collect books, only magazines. And I felt she wants your friend to bring them to the charity place tomorrow if he / she can. About a kind of papers, means magazines, recycle papers, and paper bags, she can get them, she said."

doesnt make a lot of sense, but there u go.

  11. i do like all the assumptions about this guy!

    555

    a. he speaks excellent Thai and all the dialogue was all in Thai

    b. of course he is not that concerned over a few baht, but he is not a rich well paid farang

    c. he has been here a long time and sticks to his principles in those kind of matters

    d. i was asking what would you do, not what would/should you have done.

the first thing i said was maybe he should buy the guy a beer and say no hard feelings, but his opinion is then the guy would get all he could out of him and do him over with his mates anyway.

    thanks for the posts!

  12. I have a bunch of old clothes and a whole box of other random stuff I don't want (books, bags, shoes, a farang karaoke machine etc.) that I was just going to throw out, but if anyone knows of a charity who could come get them instead that would be great.

A friend of a friend :o works for some kind of charity organization near Villa Supermarket on Thong Lo, will ask her now and get back to you with details (I know they take clothes for sure).

  13. i just ran into a friend of mine who told me the following story:

he got a bike from down the road from his apartment to not far away, knowing it would be a 30B ride. the guy asked for 50 and my mate refused. the guy got aggressive, so my mate just walked off, the guy came after him of course, and my mate gave him 40b and said that was it. the guy got really agro and asked him if he lived int that apartment, and told him to watch his back, and that he should be scared, and yada yada yada. my mate isnt too concerned, but we have both heard stories as u do.

well, i had very little advice to give...anyone else?

<he didnt get the number of the guys shirt, or the bike reg., though this could be arranged>

sorry if this is incoherent, im writing in a hurry...

maybe the correct fare was 50baht,hence the reason the taxi guy got mad.

nah, if i ever take a bike, its from further away than this friends place, to the same location and costs 40b.
