I am glad I listened to some of you guys and purchased an onward ticket.

I just had to use it 30 minutes ago for my Asiana Air flight from Seoul to Bangkok. Self check-in flagged me and I had to see an airline rep. Showed them my temporary ticket and no problem. 16 USD well spent me thinks. Thank you gents.

Do you have any type of visa or extension or are you arriving Visa Exempt or Visa on Arrival?

When has wise not worked? Still the cheapest option around!

There are numerous threads on here crying "where's my money" or "Wise taking forever" or words to that effect.  I've never experienced any serious issues but others seem to.

As regarding them being the cheapest, it all depends on how much you send and in what currency.  Currently the comparison tool on Wise' website shows them behind Revolut and Western Union for a transfer of £1,000 GBP to Thailand.  Other services may have disadvantages even if you are getting more baht in your pocket, so I'd be wary of changing without looking at the big picture.

So lets get it straight. A UK passport does not have retinal scan details. It merely has facial measurements which the Thai camera image compares and if they match, you're in.

If your phone has NFC capability you can read your passport chip and see exactly what it contains. As already mentioned, that's the info from the data page and a digital image of the photo.

The specification allows for additional biometric data like fingerprints and eye scan but these do not appear to be widely used (yet).  There is no reference to previous passport numbers stored on the chip, or any other data that you can't see by looking at the passport itself.

Once a year, account balances on accounts at end of year, now this is the important bit this will happen where you have told them that you're a Thai tax resident.

If you have a bank account sitting in England with an English address on it like many of us do then they're not sending anything to anyone, ever.

It's more detail than an end of year balance and it applies to anyone deemed a "Reportable Person".  If (and I think it's unlikely) Thailand decide you need a TIN, then you become a "Reportable Person".

  5. New player for anyone looking for an alternative or just as backup.  Only seen one report so far that it was more expensive then Wise but it's early days.  App available for Apple and Android phones but doesn't appear to have web access for transfers.  I can't sign up fully as I'm not in the UK and it couldn't verify my address using means other than my phones location.  Will try again when I get back next.

Does anyone know what the position is if you reduce your “income-looking” bank transfers to Thailand by paying for Thai goods and services with a card/ account from your foreign bank?

The information from your UK bank will be available to the Thai authorities but whether they have the resource or inclination to do anything with it is another matter.

You need to read the full set of rules, not the cut down version for those with short attention spans, just click where it says, "read more":

I'm sure you realised my comment was tongue in cheek, but in response the bit you quoted refers to not using social media sources without a link.

Rule 5 may have been better given the post content:

    5. You will not use ASEAN NOW to post any material which is knowingly or can be reasonably construed as false, inaccurate, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law. Topics or posts deemed to be scaremongering, deliberately misleading or which deliberately distort information will be removed. In factual areas such as news forums and current affairs topics member content that is claimed or portrayed as a fact should be supported by a link to a relevant reputable source.

I submit that this comes under the "In factual areas such as news forums and current affairs topics" banner (my emphasis)?

Except, that thread was discussing short-term rentals.  I believe the OP is planning to do long-term rentals--something different.  I would say a hard no to short-term rentals, from a financial point, especially with just one or two condos.  And, also because they are illegal.  Long-term rentals I find a much more viable proposition, and have done them myself.

I appreciate the distinction but the only difference in most cases is it goes from a lousy idea to a really lousy idea IMO.

Deemoney isnt a bank although works with them. WIse also uses SCB and yes without signing a special authorization the other banks limit the transfers. Swift Wire transfers coming in have a much higher limit than the 50k. A fair bit of the money coming in thru Wise is not ending up at those 3 banks and thats were it can get more cumbersome if your in a province way outside BBK

Agreed Deemoney are not a bank but a transfer partner, although Wise themselves refer to all three as "bank partners".  I have never seen a pdf receipt showing SCB being used as a partner and they are not listed on Wise's website as one.  If you have one I'd be interested to see it and update my knowledge.

The challenge you run into with Wise is they do all there transfers thru only 3 banks, bangkok bank, scb and Kasikorn, I think is the 3rd.

These are the three banks where you can send 50,000 THB or over too, but their partners for transferring are BBL, Kasikorn and Deemoney.  Used to be TMB too but they're no longer in the mix.

Which transfer destination descriptors will make the transfer a “foreign transfer”

Does Wise guarantee these destinations to appear as foreign transfer?

Long stay in Thailand or buying property.  Not guaranteed as they have a disclaimer on their website but I haven't heard many (any?) reports of it going wrong recently.  Always wise to have a backup for any method in case something goes wrong.

ETA:  Only to Kasikorn and Bangkok Bank I think.

A gold card with Star Alliance/Eva Air will allow me to use the express immigration lane on arrival?

No.  It used to be the case that Gold or equivalent status would see you issued with a fast track pass on most airlines.  These were done away with years ago and if you turn up without a Business or First Class boarding pass you'll be turned away by the Immigration Officer unless you meet one of the other criteria for using these lanes (pregnant, over 70, monk etc).
