It is encouraging that the usual suspects on TV have managed to broaden their horizons - although unfortunately not their knowledge.
I haven't had time to check, but I suspect that many of the same FBI/CSI/NCIS/Flying Squad/SAS/Navy Seal et al types here have now become aviation incident experts.
Hopefully they will quickly get their focus back on the main game, otherwise how will a single crime in Thailand be solved in the next few months.

. Isn't Uzbekistan where the "Boston Bombers" were from?
No.

Let's get some things straight:
- The suspect said that the victim was his girlfriend, Lyla Nilufar.
- This woman has a different name and age and has not claimed to even know the suspect
- The only known problem at the point is the alleged photo of the victim
- Police in Bangkok said they believed the photo was correct (obviously it wasn't), but no-one has said where the photo came from
None of the above alters the possibility/fact that it was Lyla Nilufar's body in the suitcase and that she was murdered by her boyfriend (the latter still to be proven in court). We simply have the wrong 'passport photo' associated with the case as presented in the media. No need for questions like "so who was in the case?" etc etc. This doesn't affect the victim's identity.
Perhaps the victim was using fake/stolen id, perhaps the police seized the photo from the suspect's residence and assumed it was the girlfriend ... all sorts of possibilities. And when you dump a body in water, you can bet that it messes up the features a bit, so a comparison to a photo will not always give you 100% confirmation (aside from the fact that farangs all look alike, even to me ... and I'm one myself ).
32 posts later, someone has actually read and comprehended the OP, and gets it right.
Well done that man.

A classic TV thread - giving the (overrepresented) bigots and xenophobes another opportunity to display both their ignorance, and their prejudices.
In this case, Chinese in the firing line, rather than Thais.
God give us strength.
ps not to forget the sexists of course.
Thanks to the OP.

...that these guys got outsmarted - by a FOREIGNER - and caught! Horrified that this story is being repeated far & wide. Horrified that their own little rice bowls may now be in jeopardy. Horrified that some populist politician may be able to exploit this debacle by throwing THEM under the bus. Oh, yes - a 99% horror factor sounds just about right. But 99% honest? I can see why even you're laughing. It is pretty funny.
I am having a slow day - can you help me by pointing out where anyone , besides your good self, has used the term "99% honest"?
Sure. See #182 and then #188. Hope things pick up for you.
Thanks.
As suspected, you have a reading comprehension problem.
Hope that improves for you.

Is kidnapping a capital offense in Thailand ? I really hope it is, and that this doesnt get brushed under the carpet. Still, I dont recall any more news on the rich kid who ran over that cop ....
You need to expand your reading:

Not the exact term but it's implied hereI am having a slow day - can you help me by pointing out where anyone , besides your good self, has used the term "99% honest"?
I think what skyaslimit is trying to say is, that 99% of commissioned officers in the RTP are just as horrified as we all are, that fellow police have done something of this nature and calibre.
No it isn't.
What badbanker (who is clearly literate, and not unintelligent) said is quite clear - without any need to resort to implication.
Despite a couple of taps on the shoulder, hawker9000 has chosen to assume the same implication as you - or, alternatively, he just has very poor reading comprehension "skills".

.Think you'll find it very difficult attempting to 'educate' the morons who rent these loud, noxious, environmentally unfriendly, ILLEGAL (allegedly) machines anyway. They're here on holiday Godammit! And They WILL do whatever they please, whomsoever they piss off/which soever marine life they disturb.
Selfishness and imbecility are not the sole preserve of the Thais.
Clearly not.

So would that be the same for the Hon Consul in Chiangmai, a Thai woman Jinda Charoen?
The Australian consul in Chiang Mai is an Australian businessman, Mr Michael Walther.
My understanding is that the name of his business, or the address of his business, is Jinda Charoen Konsong. The consulate operates from his business premises.

if this were a thai company their would be no recall, warnings, refund or anything else , they would just take the money and run, no resposability at all , so stop whingeing about a resposible european company showing thais how an honest business should be run !
If this were a Thai company, instead of 2, there would have been 199, whingeing and bashing posts before yours.
And yours would make up to the even 200.

I really feel sorry for the little girl, that probably will not receive a proper education and that will be brought up in a country that has no moral compass and no wisdom.
I guess you meant to say "a different moral compass, and different wisdom".
That would make sense.

I have no opinion on the rights or wrongs of this guy's situation, as like everyone else on this forum, I have very little knowledge of what has occurred, and believe that ill or uninformed speculation adds very little to the discussion.
As far as Oz Embassies are concerned, I have never received less than prompt, courteous and efficient service - generally dealing with those apparently non-existent Australian officials. Likewise when dealing with local officers, both at the Bangkok and Vientiane Embassies, and in earlier times, Beijing.
For the (only to be expected) whingers, I am reminded of this excellent piece from 2009 by the former Oz Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander "Fishnets" Downer:
....................After about 10 minutes as foreign minister I was a little surprised to learn I was "responsible" for miscreant Australians who got into trouble in foreign countries.
No, no, no, don't get it wrong - drug traffickers, drunks, kleptomaniacs and fraudsters weren't responsible for their own stupidity - I was.
It's about time that great nanny in Canberra, the Federal Government, turned around and told people they are responsible for their own decisions.............

Right, I'm new to the topic after 4 years away from LOS.
Here is what I read this morning, there's an explanation about the low quality rice in it.
I hope it hasn't been posted before.
I was surprised that the Economist would not do more research on it. They opened up with
"This week an opinion poll carried out by Bangkok University"
In other words about 1,500 people in about 27 provinces were talked to. Some poll. Has the Economist standards of reporting sunk to the level of The Nation?
The whole article was just rehash of commonly known facts.
Common sense would tell me that what is written in The Economist has far more credibility than most of the sh1t written on the TVF - and yes, that includes you.

I said it before once, I'll say it again, if any country needs the Chinese form of justice, it's Thailand.
No thanks.
At least the judges here are legally qualified, and have some degree of independence from the State - whether or not they choose to exercise it.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Some children are just plain nasty no matter what their parents are like, just as many adults are.
Kids have traits and its parents responsibility to spot those and address it.
My neighbor, thai(ex bar) married to a french, Kid from small age was taken through every single brothel i can think of, either by the father or the mother.
5 dogs have been killed by the little
XXX, few cats, he steals from other people and damages cars- all just for fun.The retarded mother just laughs and the more retarded father does the same.
Kid is about 5 years old now
I wonder where he would end up.
Probably better for all concerned if the next doors move.

Humans reflect their mother's value system. Men cannot dictate emotional values to children; much as they'd like to imagine otherwise. Society and Culture is almost exclusively the domain of the matriarchy.
Must be tough for those "humans" whose mothers died or skipped off when they were very young.

My three year old daughter will start school this year. Prior to her attendance, I will have a conversation with the head master, telling him if ANYTHING happens to my daughter, I will hold him personally responsible. And furthermore, I would most likely take news of injury to my daugher very very poorly....
Dear Mr Headmaster
Be afraid ....... be very afraid!

put the 10 year old girl and her parent down
psycho killer behaviour
Best case for the death penalty I've seen lately.
Oh dear ...... can TVF sink any lower?
If there is to be any "putting down" to be done in Thailand, I would suggest it starts with loonies who make posts such as above.

I had a big house on a mountain in Samui, I also have two big German Shepherds....never had a problem, but after I moved away the new owner was burgled four times in three months. I still have the dogs and still dont have problems.
Someone is bound to say that dogs get poisoned and I dont doubt that but that sort of thing is few and far between.
HL
Samui ............ in what part of Issan is that?

6 years - no.

Why do guys shoot the guys who are shagging their wives? The wife is the one in the wrong.
If she has not said "yes" then it's rape Surely his anger should be directed at her..
The wife is the one at fault here, just like all the married men cavorting around red-light areas when they are married.
He didn't shoot him for shagging his misses, he shot the guy for disrespecting him.
Ah! ...... that's OK then.
I guess that is what happens when the ego is infinitely larger than the intellect.

I have trouble understanding how there can be so many comments bounding, advice, speculations, "this is what he should have done," throw aways when a vital piece of information is missing.
A photo of the wife, please...... until then I reserve all judgement.
edit for typo
How about you put up a photo of yourself - then everyone can make their own judgement.
