Wow. I can't believe how much incorrect information there is in this thread. I was going to quote a few of the worst examples but there are way too many.

So the best advice I can give is to‘ "Move Along. Nothing to see here."

Hopefully you will heed your own advice and just move along. ????

In terms of noticeable speed improvement s for day to day use.

    1. Disk drive. nvme is faster than ssd and both are faster than hdd.

    2. RAM

    3. CPU. The cpu really only matters in very highly intensive cpu operations like rendering and gaming. In the case of gaming, much of the load is offloaded to a separate GPU such as nvidea produce. If you are regularly gaming without one then it may make a difference.

I disagree, slightly. What you meant is NVMe(PCIe) SSD is faster than SATA SSD. Though in day to day usage the OP would not notice a difference.

I would put CPU in second place and RAM last. Reason being that 4GB of RAM is still adequate. Having 8GB will only bring a small increase in performance. Be more importantly, the RAM can easily be upgraded. Chances are the CPU cannot. So don't skimp there.

I look at CPU first and then things such as screen quality. I can customise Storage and RAM, so that has little or no impact.

Thanks. I am currently in Vietnam and Lazada Vietnam has the 3405 on sale. Will check out the 3400.

Don't buy anything with an HDD unless it is super cheap. If it is then you can get the manufacturer's service centre to fit an SSD for you in order to protect any warranty.

In other words, don't buy anything not fitted with an SSD if you care about the warranty.

Will you be living in Vietnam? If not, check where the warranty will be honoured.

Thanks for letting me know that this model is nothing special. 14 inch would be ideal size but a little bigger or smaller would be okay. How about the Huawei Mate book D 14 or 15? Specs look good too me. Have been using the same Huawei smartphone for 4 years and very happy with it. Do they make good computers too? Open to suggestions, just has to be under 20 K.

    Which Huawei device?

    Some bulk standard alternatives:

Though check if the warranty is the same as it is here: https://itrinitydell.com/product/notebook-dell/vostro/vostro-3510-15-6/

If you don't mind installing Windows 10/11 yourself then the ACER Travelmate P214 is within budget and is portable. Doesn't cost much and isn't difficult to install the OS.

Search these model numbers individually via Google.

The link below is to the Tri Band Amplifier that I purchased on Lazada during their 12/12 sale:

    https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i338454620-s655746340.html?urlFlag=true&mp=1

There was a good discount I bought it for 2100 baht including delivery.

It has passed customs in China and is currently on its way to Thailand.

I should have it in the next few days as the delivery at this end is by Kerry and I have had good experience with that company.

I will initially try the antenna mounted the top of my roof on the aluminium shaft from and old lawn trimmer (hopefully wont act like a lighting rod)

If I need to go higher I will source another mast solution (maybe a nice piece of bamboo).

I will report back on the results.

The tri band will support all of the bands of the big 3....Dtac, True and AIS.

Seems you went with AIS in the end, according to your post on another thread. Is this yet another abandoned thread or will you update it?

*if it runs Windows 10, because Windows 10 is simply unusable on HDD.

I do confirm that SSDs are generally faster, but there are nuances too: some cheap SSDs are actually slower than HDDs! you must look for SSDs that

    1) have DRAM

    2) made with MLC (recommended) or TLC (less recommended, sometimes marketed as "3-bit MLC") technology, not QLC.

QLC SSD without DRAM will be slower than HDD.

Of course you can use Windows 10 with an HDD. But I agree that you should use an SSD as a Boot drive whenever possible.

    1) As a general rule it is better to buy SSD with DRAM, but SSD without DRAM will still be considerably more efficient than HDD.

    2) You are getting somewhat carried away with MLC. That will be for Pro drives ???? TLC is normal. If TLC is 3- bit MLC; then QLC is 4-bit MLC. QLC really not of interest unless you are looking for a cheap, very large capacity drive.

QLC without DRAM will still be faster than HDD; since responsiveness is not just about sequential writes. Even without DRAM they will utilise a SLC cache. When the fast cache is full, sequential writes become relatively slow.

For example, the Samsung 870 QVO 1 TB has a SLC cache of 42GB, so you'll need to be transferring huge files to see a slowdown.

But currently, I see no reason to buy a QLC SSD at all; unless you need an 8TB drive and it's very cheap.

In conclusion, the average good standard consumer 2.5" SSD will have a DRAM cache and TLC NAND flash memory. Samsung EVO 870 and Crucial MX500 being two notable examples. 2- bit MLC would be nice, but that will be in the more expensive Pro drives. 1- bit SLC we don't see at all ????

I have just one SSD with MLC NAND flash memory, bought many years ago when MLC NAND was the norm.

I am about to purchase a new computer. Of all the computers in my price range (up to 20000 Baht), the Dell Vostro 3405 seems to check all the boxes (decent CPU, FHD, RAM 8,Rom 1 TB) except for that it has the outdated HDD, most computers nowadays run on SSD. How much of a difference does it make?

Nothing special about that laptop. It's actually marketed as a Business laptop; a step down from their Latitude range.

    Look for something else.

Are you looking at a 14" screen specifically?

I have been buying data sims on Shopee and Lazada now for 3-4 years.

The sim will be shipped to you.  It will have an expiry date before which it has to be registered.  It should be way in the future 6-8 months (and date is usually including in the listing from the seller).

When it arrives you can register it in your name via online chat with the seller.  They will require that you upload a photo of you holding up the sim so they can see the barcode on the sim packet and a photo of your passport.  This will then register in a just a minute or so.  Then you put it in you phone and you are good to go.

I have used True, AIS and DTAC data sims.

True is good in that you can get 12 months UNLIMITED data at speed of 10mbps.  But you need to check first that your area has a good signal from them.

I have been using the above mentioned sim for years but recently bought a house in another area.  I was still using the True sim but the signal was not very good because I am out of town.

AIS has better cover here but their marathon sim (6 or 12 month) are not unlimited and have data capped at 100GB which is not nearly enough.

Fortunately just last week I found the AIS SIM promotion (link below) I bought it and it was delivered in 2 days.  It has unlimited data for just 200baht per month valid for 6 months.  It states that speed is limited to 10mbps but I have been getting up to 20mbps.  The sim is already registered by the shop (in their name) so you just take it out of the packet and put it in your phone and it is good to go. It costs 200baht but includes first month of data free. The shop I have linked to below has good service with quick reply to chat enquiries and they understand and reply in English. 5 stars from me:

Nice that you thanked me for pushing you towards AIS. You were totally hung up on that Truemove H SIM and abjectly refused to publish any kind of speed test results for AIS. Instead insisting that it's performance was similar to Truemove H.

Now here you are admitting that AIS was the right choice all along. Behaviour a little bit too disgusting for me. You are welcome anyway.

The AIS unlimited promo changed from 20 Mbps, 10 Mbps & 4 Mbps to 20 Mbps, 15 Mbps & 4 Mbps this month.

No need to order from anywhere, as you can apply it for yourself. Though useful they register them for you.

What speeds are you actually getting down and up? Use this test to find out: https://testmy.net

Yet again I ask the very same question. Its no good remotely claiming what you do when the reality is different

Now I've just gone to Truemove unlimited for 30 days and certainly not a quick speed per se I might add. The cost is clear and even shows the short code to obtain it....over 900 Baht

What is the connection between my post, that you have quoted, and what you have posted?

I see no connection at all. Perhaps you can clarify.

Read my post again and then try explain to me why you have quoted my post with something that appears totally unrelated.

It's like I say go upstairs to collect an item...instead you go downstairs and then complain to me that you could not find it.

Did you follow my suggestion exactly or did you do something completely different but expect the same result?

I checked my phone for hotspots - different providers inside my Condo and ALL the providers listed (AIS , Dtac , True etc ) only have 3G  service !!  I am going to research / see if any providers have fibre either in my soi or nearby my Condo .

What about the speeds available with the network? SPEEDS. It's painful having to ask the same things over and over again ????

Speeds...what speeds are you getting with AIS? ???? What speeds with Truemove H? What speeds with DTAC?

3G is not the point. You can still get high speeds via 3G.

Check for signal strength whilst you are at it: Go to the Settings app > About phone > Status > SIM status > Signal Strength.

We need actual figures. Please pay attention. The details are important ????

Are both of your SIM slots 4G/LTE capable?

Your phone supports 3CA(which would be useful if you had 4G/LTE coverage: https://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/content/en-us00423534/

  12. The positive thing is that the OP already has a phone and an AIS SIM. But I'm not sure why the speed test has not already been done. As if AIS can give you 10 to 20 Mbps right now, then there would be no need to test any other networks unless you were looking at trying to save money.

Still trying to get which phone ????

*777*70# then to hit the dial key:100MB of data volume for 10 baht, is enough to run the speed test.

Do the Combined Test here: https://testmy.net

If you want to be sure then yes, you have test it. And more than once. I think to do that in a meaningful way it would be a lot of work (different days, times, sites, etc.).

Probably it is easier to ask other people in that building what they use and how they like it.

Sorry but this is really not right. You can have a different experience from one side of the building to the other; word of mouth recommendation is next to useless.

What works is checking the signal strength available in their apartment; not in the building in general. This is why I have asked about their phone so many times.

If you think tracking down neighbours and quizzing them is quicker than simply wandering around the apartment ONE time looking at signal strength for a SIM, then you should think again.

Different days, times etc is just hyperbole to push them towards your inefficient suggestion..

Apart from anything else, it assumes that any of their immediate neighbours even know that they are using the best possible SIM for their location. Neighbour might be perfectly happy with 4 Mbps.

One signal strength test and one speed test  for each SIM is enough. No need for different days, times, sites...

    Once

  14. I think you need to forget any idea of getting around Google and Xiaomi. Google is behind Android and Xiaomi are getting in on the act with their MIUI interface.

So even when you root the phone, the interface might still feed you ads or whatever.

Though getting back to who can do it for you; I haven't needed such a task done and so haven't any personal recommendation. Good luck in your endeavour.

Well slightly off topic I cannot make a tel call from my condo on 25th floor on Jomtien Beach Road

and have to go to the ground floor  for proper reception. !

Less off-topic and more not particularly unhelpful. It doesn't address the network, exact location, position in the building.

I know someone getting the full whack of the AIS 10 Mbps pack above the 20th floor on Jomtien's Second Road.

So it's not about Jomtien or the height of the building. Same person tried DTAC and whilst it worked, it was slower and less reliable. I had the opposite experience in a low rise building on Jomtien's beach road.

So one really needs to test with all networks if another network proves poor.

That actually sounds practical..... but I thought the test kits were somewhat more expensive. And if this silly requirement remains it won't be long before there are non to be found..... there's a bloody queue at immigration as far as Beach Rd when they take a single day off here!

The UK is suffering test kit shortages now.

    Are they?

Maybe that's because I have them
