OP, if you can extend your budget a little bit, you might want to look at something like this. Gets rid of the genuine W10 problem as well. Specs look very good as well. Link is:

The above being said, I have noticed recently that Lazada have a lot (and I mean a lot) of older 2nd hand machines going cheap. If you have an understanding of laptops, it may be an option to get one of these, change out HDD for SSD, increase RAM and do a clean install following Stouricks's advice in the above post. Obviously, this can be a bit of a gamble, even if the seller gives a reduced warranty.

If you are planning to stay legit with the OS I assume you will be staying legit with the additional software you will need to install? Unless you are using free open source software (like office suites, pdf software, graphics programs, etc) you should also factor that in as well.

    Relatively old and poor CPU.

It being on par with this low cost laptop: https://www.invadeit.co.th/product/notebooks-laptops/acer/a314-22-a8st-nx-hvwst-003-pure-silver-p051541/

    For 13k, expect a better CPU: https://www.invadeit.co.th/product/notebooks-laptops/asus/laptop-15-m509da-ej443t-slate-gray-p050793/

Though both of them are lacking. Relatively poor screens.

I have quite a few credit cards for domestic UK use but my main credit card for international travels is the Halifax Clarity credit card [MasterCard].  I carry the rest of the cards for back up, just in case.

I don't draw funds from the ATM on the Halifax card as I have a Bangkok Bank account.  But both are useful in their own ways.

I regularly send money over to my Bangkok Bank account from UK and draw cash, when required, with no charges.  But for larger purchases in LOS then I pay on the Halifax Clarity.

It's actually cheaper to take a cash advance over the counter with the Clarity, to then put the cash into the Bangkok Bank account, than it is to send it over from the U.K.

Wow--You gotta love the internet. Lots of information and nonsense all in a big pile. If you never had a course in critical thinking you may be in trouble.

Windows 10 can be downloaded from Microsoft for free at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

It will yield a clean (reasonably up to date) copy of Windows 10. It will NOT give you a legal license key.

If Windows 10 has ever been legally activated on the computer it (the computer) has a lifetime entitlement to be re-installed and activated.

Please note the word LEGAL in the previous two sentences--keys that are purchased from eBay, Lazada, Craigslist, or anyone other than Microsoft are probably ILLEGAL and you are participating in copyright infringement also sometimes refereed to as theft.

Of course if you purchase a new computer from a reputable company--like directly from the manufacturer--with Windows pre-installed it is probably fine. Although there has been software found on some machines that was "calling home" even on those machines.

The best you can do to be sure that your Windows installation is clean is to use the Media Creation Tool to install on a new hard drive.

Considering that there have been more than 400 security patches to Win-10 in 2020 I don't know why anyone would want to run an unpatched  version.

The real question is why are you using Windows? There are metter choices and you don't have to spend Apple money.

Why not just get a Chromebook/box or load some version of Linux and be legal? Linux, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and almost all the software you might want is available for FREE!

I think this post belongs in the second category. Copyright infringement? Utterly ridiculous.

Buy a ChromeBook to be legal?

    Very poor and misleading advice.

Finn Mobile via DTAC does pretty well in my Central BKK/Sukhumvit location, certainly a lot better than 10 Mbps.

That's good. But not every experiences the same. So it depends on what you can get at your location.

Even full speed AIS in my apartment fails to exceed 20 Mbps.

There is a way to prevent having to restore the KMS file every 180 days. Once KMS is installed do the following:  Windows Settings>Security>Firewall & Network Protection>Allow an app through firewall>Scroll through the list of apps and then (if it is KMS that you have downloaded and installed ) select Key Management Service. Save this. Once done this prevents your firewall and Windows Defender from quarantining your KMS files.

Or you can just purchase a key for next to nothing and stop the nonsense of having to deal with a hack, for the sake of 100 baht(or less) spent.

My Thai wife has the same on her comp, not activated but running. DOnt know about updates, never saw it do so.

SHe got problems as not starting after a long time. It turned out that in her bios firmware firmware changed from "legacy"to "UEFI".

ANd then it didnt work anymore. SHe didnt know anything about bios, so never changed her self.

So from who comes the change then? Microsoft? as not being an activated OS?

To make a minor problem, so you go back to shop for legal OS?

When that is changed, it doesnt start and it is very hard to get in the bios to change back again to "legacy".

Time was really short for getting into bios.

Taking out the battery of the laptop improved time to get into bios and change back.

DOnt know about your OS, but it could be the same? You could await this problem?

I wrote it down for her to change herself if she has the problem again and up to now she can and comp still works, not activated.

Seriously, buy a Windows 10 Pro key via eBay for less than 100 baht. Switch it back to UEFI and Secure Boot and run a clean install for her.

Why suffer all of that nonsense for the sake of 100 baht or less?

It will stay like this forever.

There are a few functions disabled as long as windows is not activated like installing new fonts or changing the apearance.

If your pc works fine, install a firewall and antivirus and disable it in windows.

Also disable updates, no need for it. Some more services can be disabled. Worx perfect.

    Terrible advice.

    The worst.

It costs either nothing or less than 100 baht to fix the issue.

    4mbps is trash..

Finn Mobile has 699 baht/month unlimited data at FULL speed plus UNLIMITED regular calls.

Have had Finn Mobile for the last two years (I'm not on unlimited plan but I save 50% compared to my old AIS SIM) and cannot complain at all.

Full speed means nothing if they don't offer high speeds in your particular location. Both DTAC and Truemove H offer dismal speeds in my apartment. So their "full speed" would still be less than the 10 Mbps AIS package I run. 200 baht per month for unlimited usage.

Had a weird but typical experience with AIS lately...

The wife and I have been on the same AIS postpaid plan for the past year, 99 baht per month for 180 any network calling minutes, and then any data and SMS charged extra... Which was perfect for us, because we both have other main use SIMs and were just holding onto our original AIS numbers as backups/placeholders...

Now the weird part was, last week, AIS sent us both SMS messages saying our one-year plans were expiring and the best they could offer for the coming year was a 149b per month plan with the same 180 minutes and then unlimited 64 Kbps internet (the latter being pretty useless for almost anything).

I didn't really want to pay more for SIMs we really don't use much, so asked my wife to call AIS and see what could be done. She did, and they ended up offering her over the phone a different plan, supposedly something special because of the CV, that would keep our 99b per month / 180 minutes rate for at least the coming 3 months -- after sending us SMSs saying said plan wasn't available anymore.

So in the process, I was looking at the AIS website and AIS mobile app. Both the original plan we had and the newer 149b plan they originally offered both had Thai names. And neither of those could I find anywhere in the website or app. Nor could I find any calling minutes postpaid plan costing 99b or even 149b per month. I think the lowest postpaid plan with calling minutes I could find with them was something like 249b per month.

So, we're sticking with the 99b / 180 calling minutes plan for at least the coming 3 months. But it strikes me as reflecting an exceptional lack of transparency on AIS's part -- plans they claim are canceled that then are really not, low priced plans they offer, but don't seem to publicly list anywhere... Typical Thai stuff.

Move your Postpaid SIM to Prepaid. Then you can keep the numbers alive by simply topping up 20 baht x 12 for it to maintain validity a year in advance. 480 baht per annum, which stays as credit on the SIM account.

Otherwise you are paying 2376 baht per annum for precisely nothing.

So apart from the provided data, they have the ability to make calls for some specified X baht per minute rate that's charged against a top-up balance?

Dependent on the promo at the time, you could add unlimited calls for an extra 50 baht per month or 20 baht per week or simply pay the standard rate of around 1 baht per minute.

Thanks Lucky. will try and see if i can get a code, but if not, maybe live with the banners if necessary. Just surprised that a supposedky reputable shop would not install an original one. Would go back and give them a piece of my mind, but would be wasting my time here i think

If they did not install an original one, it is likely because you did not pay for an original one.

Some devices are sold without Windows preinstalled in order to keep the price down for people who may choose to install their own OS.

So about what exactly would you complain? That they sold you a hooky copy for 300 baht?

Report back as requested and someone will provide a fix.

But my choice would always be to run my own OS install, rather than entering a key into someone else's possibly 'hooky' install.

    Thanks Chris

I bought the computer around 3 years ago, so not sure how this ties in with the 180 day ?

    Will look at the rest

If a new computer bought here, can i insist on the actual sealed disc of Microsoft Windows  and install it myself ? Do they do that here ?

Always used to get discs when buying in Uk, and kept these safe if required later, but never gave it a thought here

Did you identify the edition and report back, as requested?

Just curious.. for these kinds of prepaid data packages, do they include the ability to make regular mobile phone calls for some extra added X baht-per-minute fee... OR.... are they strictly data only package, no calling available via the package?

    Totally normal SIM.

Not according to this vendor. He even sent me this step-by-step self registration for unlimited sim.

And really there is no point spending 1400 baht for a random number simcard, only to find out your free unlimited 12-cycle Internet plan has been reverted back to 1-month subscription Internet.

Thai customer service are not exactly helpful when foreigners ask for advices. They tend to throw their best-most expensive deal rather than ongoing value-for-money deal.

    Screenshot_2020-06-23-09-00-16-87.png

    Seriously, stop this .....

How many threads and posts will you make about the same thing?

Once you have the SIM and registered it, you can get the call centre to tell you what package is attached. If they confirm the annual pack, you can begin to relax. If there is a problem, approach Lazada for a full refund.

But making post after post on thread after thread will not reassure you.

People, here alone, have been using these annual SIMs from Lazada for years without issue.

So please, just buy it if you want it, from a seller with a good rep who offers a method of registration most pleasing to you. The registration has nothing to do with the package on the SIM nor the vendor. It's just a regulation they have to follow to ensure they know who owns the SIM card.

What do you mean 80GB/month for 12 cycles at full speed? Wasnt the full speed of 4G is 10Mbps in Thailand?

I read your recommendation on other post about huawei mifi. Do you think any pocket mifi is compatible with these unlimited 1xxx baht simcards? I dont have old 4G phone to use as tethering device and some vendors stated not all unlimited simcards in Thailand are compatible with pocket mifi.

10 Mbps is the speed limit of that particular SIM card offer. Unlimited data, limited speed.

The other SIM offer doesn't limit the speed, but limits the amount of data.

You have simply ignored the description and mixed and matched yourself a totally made up product.

1400 is for 80 GB of no speed limit data(up to what is available at your location) per month

1890 is for unlimited 10 Mbps(speed limited) data.

They will work in any MiFi. Though you'll need to check the radio frequencies match.

  17. 1 hour ago, arfandy said:

50 baht simcard but i have to subscribe for "unlimited" internet per month will cost me at least 350 baht per cycle. Wouldnt be better to buy 1400 baht simcard with unlimited 10Mbps for 12 cycles without the need to topup anything?

But yes, there is no way to find out if my place is blanketed by 4G signal of certain provider unless i test 'em all out.

No. SIM 50 baht. 100 MB volume of data pack, 10 baht. Go to your room and run a speed test. If Truemove H gives you a good speed, say 10 -20 Mbps, Then you can buy one of the long term SIMs.

If it gives only 2 to 4 Mbps and that isn't enough for you, then you might want to look at another option.

It appears your humour was just much to subtle for our readers.
