The survey, which took place from 1st to 20th July, measured the opinions of users of the Line app. Srettha Thavisin garnered an impressive 40.13% of the votes, amounting to 8,742. The poll results reflect a significant public endorsement of his leadership. Pita Limjaroenrat, the chief advisor of the Move Forward Party, came a close second with 7,427 votes, accounting for 34.09% of the total. In terms of other notable figures, Chalermchai Sri-on, the leader of the Democrat Party, received 9.02% of the votes with 1,966 people showing their support. Meanwhile, Move Forward's MP Sirikanya Tansakul earned 2.59% with 565 votes, and Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin captured 2.2% with 479 votes. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga snagged 471 votes, making up 2.16% of the poll. Pheu Thai MP Jiraporn Sindhuprai, former Thai Civilized Party leader Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, and Democrat chief advisor Chuan Leekpai received 0.94%, 0.88%, and 0.87% of the votes, respectively. Four Colombian men have been apprehended in Nonthaburi and Chon Buri for a series of home burglaries targeting housing estates in Bangkok and nearby provinces. Immigration officers and police arrested three suspects at a condominium in Mueang district, Nonthaburi, and the fourth at a hotel in South Pattaya, Chon Buri, according to Police Major General Panthana Nuchanart, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau. The arrests took place on Thursday, July 18. Charged with colluding in theft, the suspects were found in possession of screwdrivers and other tools used for break-ins, rented motorcycles, and 125 stolen valuables worth around 3 million baht. The seized items included cash, gold necklaces, gold rings, and watches. Recent reports of home burglaries prompted a joint investigation by the Immigration Bureau and police officers from Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan. The investigation identified four foreign suspects, leading to the arrests, Pol. Maj. Gen. Panthana confirmed yesterday, July 19. The gang’s activities were traced to several incidents: a break-in in Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao, on July 7 an intrusion in Mae Nang subdistrict, Bang Yai district, Nonthaburi, on July 8 a burglary in Bang Kaeo district, Samut Prakan, on July 9 a theft in Bang Pa-in district, Ayutthaya, on July 16 break-ins in Bang Khen and Khannayao districts, Bangkok, on July 17 The stolen items were valued in the millions of baht. The suspects reportedly used rented motorcycles to approach the targeted houses and carried out the burglaries before the homeowners returned. Police Lieutenant General Jirasant Kaewsaeng-ek, commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, stated that although the suspects denied involvement in the burglaries, evidence found by the arresting team implicated them. The suspects have been identified as 52 year old Fredy Alexander Velasquez Fruiz, 47 year old Jhon Edwin Suarez Calderon, 29 year old Andres Felipe Velasquez Pira, and 51 year old Marco Tulio Pinzon Torneros, reported Bangkok Post. “Three of the four arrested Colombian suspects are shown with the motorcycles that police say were used for the home break-ins. Viput Srivaurai, representing Bang Rak district, has called on the BMA to leverage technology and innovation to enhance motorcycle taxi services. He emphasised the need for a data management system that details drivers and their vehicles, ensuring a safe and reasonably priced ride-hailing service for Bangkok's residents and tourists. “This service would allow motorcycle taxi drivers to pay lower fees compared to those charged by platforms like Grab,” Viput commented. Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt mentioned the BMA already maintains a database of motorcycle taxi services. This database includes service point locations, the number of drivers, their ID numbers, licence plate numbers, and fare structures. However, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) currently bars this information from being publicly shared. With around 5,300 service points and 80,000 registered drivers, Bangkok's motorcycle taxi system is widely used. Geoffrey Fisher, a Brit who recently paid 900,000 baht (about 20,000 UK pounds) for the five year Elite visa said he had wasted his money as more or less anyone can now stay in Thailand almost indefinitely for a paltry sum. The disenchanted argue that the 60 days visa-exempt can evidently be extended at local immigration for 30 days more followed by a border run to start the whole process again. Some immigration officers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport have allegedly told new arrivals they can now do as many border runs as they like. Separately, the five years and multi-entry Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) offers 180 days on entry for 10,000 baht (around 200 UK pounds) plus the chance to extend for a further 180 days. The process can then be repeated by briefly leaving the country. American expat Dan Silverman, who holds a yearly extension based on retirement, said, “It’s just ridiculous. I have to keep 800,000 baht in a Thai bank, obtain medical insurance, face ever-changing regulations and regularly report my Thai address throughout the year, or be fined.” He added, “And for what, when you can come and go as you please with the new visas?” Views such as this are currently being voiced widely on social media as expats digest the latest visa announcement. Police officers believed that the Chinese men, who broke into the house of a Chinese man in Pattaya and unsuccessfully forced him to give them 10 million baht, had been hired by the Chinese man’s own cousin, originally reported as his sister, who was supposedly abducted. On July 18th, 2024, a key witness, Mr. Aun (full name withheld upon request), a 30-year-old van driver, came forward to the Nongprue Police Station to report that he had been hired by four Chinese nationals to transport them from a Pattaya hotel to Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Mr. Aun was contacted by police after he was believed to have unknowingly helped transport Chinese people who broke into the house of Mr. Qian Peng Yi, 34, in Pattaya on July 17th. The men threatened Mr. Yi to give them 10 million baht in cash, stole his valuables, and also allegedly took his cousin. Mr. Yi, however, did not give them money because he managed to escape and seek help from the police. Mr. Aun denied any involvement in the robbery and stated that he took a picture of the group while they were smoking cigarettes at the airport entrance. A young boy has drawn widespread attention after sleeping alone in a laundromat in the Chiang Mai province late at night. Concerned netizens expressed their desire to help the child, sparking a conversation about his welfare. Footage shared by TikTok user @suwatchareek captured the boy entering the laundromat around 3am and staying until 5am. “A little boy came to sleep in the shop until 5am. I don’t know what he’s been through, but I’m glad he felt safe here.” The incident occurred around 3.42am on July 16, when a boy in a yellow shirt was seen lying on the floor of a laundromat near Wat Si Ping Mueang in Chiang Mai. The shop owner, Botan, revealed that the boy left by 5am without tampering with anything in the shop. The next day at approximately 2am, the same boy returned with another, older child. They both slept on the floor until 5am again. Botan and her daughter, who reviewed the CCTV footage, were puzzled by the boy’s nocturnal visits and wondered why his parents were not looking for him. This move aims to enhance security and reduce fraud related to unregistered mobile numbers. The affected numbers are primarily linked to individuals possessing between six and 100 unregistered SIM cards. The suspension affects their ability to make calls, send SMS, and access the internet. NBTC Commissioner Police General Nathathorn Prousoontorn emphasised the importance of this action, stating that if the SIM cards are not registered within the next 30 to 45 days, the numbers will be permanently revoked and redistributed. The Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) recently tasked the NBTC with reviewing approximately 80 million mobile phone numbers associated with over 113 million mobile banking accounts. This measure is to ensure that the ownership of SIM cards matches the account holders, a process that is expected to be completed by the end of next month. “This initiative is crucial for national security and in combating fraudulent activities. We urge all mobile users to register their SIM cards promptly to avoid service disruption.” The NBTC’s suspension affects 2.14 million mobile numbers, a significant step in the ongoing effort to secure mobile communications and financial transactions. ORIGINAL STORY: NBTC suspends SIM cards to tackle call centre scams The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand, in partnership with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), launched a significant operation aimed at regulating mobile banking and combating call centre scams. The initiative led to the suspension of 1,096,000 phone numbers registered to users holding more than 101 SIM cards. A member of the NBTC board, Police General Nathathorn Prousoontorn, alongside other high-ranking officials, convened a meeting to assess the progress in addressing call centre gang activities. During the meeting, they unveiled several key measures being implemented. One of the primary actions involves suspending unverified SIM cards. Users who have not verified their identities in accordance with NBTC regulations will have their services suspended. So far, NBTC has suspended 2,141,317 unverified SIM cards. Among these, 1,096,000 SIM cards were held by users possessing 101 or more SIM cards. The partnership also scrutinised fraudulent mobile banking SIM cards. NBTC received data from 21 banks through AMLO, covering 79 million bank accounts and 113,568,836 mobile banking phone numbers. This data is being analysed to ensure that SIM card owners match the bank account holders. The verification process is ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of July 2024. In addition, NBTC, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Police, is cracking down on illegal telecom signal towers installed along the border in five provinces: Tak, Chiang Rai, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Ranong. As part of a strategic shift, Thai AirAsia X will relocate all operations back to Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) from October 1, moving away from Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK). To minimise disruption, Thai AirAsia X will reroute impacted Sydney-Bangkok flights via Kuala Lumpur, operated by AirAsia X Malaysia. Affected passengers can alter travel plans with free flight changes, flight credits worth the value of the flight plus 10%, or opt for full refunds. Notifications will be sent via email or SMS to direct bookers, while others should check their booking channels. Thai AirAsia X previously ceased flights to Melbourne and Brisbane in May 2023 and April 2020 respectively, leaving Sydney as its only Australian operation since December 2022. The move to Don Mueang is aimed at leveraging the extensive AirAsia network for better connectivity and easier access to central Bangkok. Police have detained members of a scammer gang at Tha Phae Gate, Chiang Mai, who were scamming tourists by selling bird food and charging them for photos, deemed to be damaging the area’s reputation as a tourist destination. Today, July 19, officers from the Tourist Police Division 2, led by Makara Srisakulpisut and Nithipat Bunmak, conducted a thorough inspection of the Tha Phae Gate area. They discovered individuals secretly selling bird food to tourists and then taking photos without consent before demanding payment. The two police officers consider this scam to have negatively impacted the tourism image of the area. Makara stated that this crackdown is part of Operation 10 Prohibited Groups, aimed at maintaining the safety and confidence of both Thai and international tourists in key economic and tourist areas. The operation is a response to directives from the Tourist Police Bureau to enhance the order and security of tourist destinations. Previously, local and Tourist Police had arrested similar scammers but the problem persisted. During the recent operation, three individuals were apprehended. The suspects included 55 year old Buyae from Chiang Rai, 35 year old Phetai from Nan, and 41 year old Rohani, a Chiang Mai native. They were charged with causing a public nuisance. A harrowing incident in Nonthaburi, Thailand, has left a motorcycle taxi rider hospitalised after being stabbed by a drunken passenger. The altercation occurred on July 17th when 56-year-old Akkaraphon attacked the rider, identified as 44-year-old Thunya, to avoid paying the fare. Thunya had driven Akkaraphon from Bang Bua Thong Market to a village near Bangkok. Upon arrival, Thunya requested the fare of 150 baht. Unexpectedly, Akkaraphon, reportedly intoxicated after consuming four bottles of beer, refused to pay. Instead, he suggested that Thunya collect the money at the end of the month. The situation quickly escalated as Akkaraphon suddenly stabbed Thunya in the neck with a pair of scissors. Police officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station were promptly notified and hurried to the scene along with Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescue workers. Thunya was rushed to Bang Bua Thong Hospital, suffering from a serious neck wound on the left side. Despite the severe injury, he managed to leap from his motorcycle to avoid further attacks, causing Akkaraphon to fall. Locals and witnesses intervened, restraining Akkaraphon until law enforcement arrived. The assailant was subsequently taken to the police station for questioning. During his interrogation, Akkaraphon admitted to the stabbing, attributing his actions to his inebriated state. CERTAIN PARTIES HAVE BEEN covertly attempting to mastermind the control of some newly-elected senators whilst others may already have been submissive to them now that the naming of a Senate speaker is approaching, according to Senator Premsak Piayura. The senator from Khon Kaen today (July 19) alleged the unidentified parties of clandestinely attempting to manipulate the naming of a Senate speaker and deputy Senate speakers among some senators who could probably be more or less influenced whilst others may already have been swayed by those political camps, albeit in very discreet fashion. Without naming names, Premsak said all 200 senators are legally obliged to be practically, invariably free of partisan influence when it comes to the deliberation of legislations being passed from the House of Representatives and particularly the naming of a Senate speaker and deputy Senate speakers scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday.
