Out of control MONK in NW steals two cars - he's chased all over Mae Sot before he's finally arrested Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on an extraordinary chase in the north west of Thailand yesterday. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on an extraordinary chase in the north west of Thailand yesterday. Even by the standards of "monks behaving badly" in Thailand this was a doozy. A monk called "Phra Boy" had been ordained many years ago in a country temple in Mae Sot district of Tak. But a few days ago he had gone to a Buddhist affairs office in Mahawan sub-district and asked to stay there. Then all of a sudden he stole a Nissan pick-up that belonged to a person who had arrived to make merit and who had left the keys in the ignition. Phra Boy drove off at speed. But other monks and the owner of the pick-up gave chase. They chased him for 20 kilometers to downtown Mae Sot. The speeding monk clearly knew the roads well and was an accomplished driver, noted the media. On the way he had stopped at a second hand vehicle tent. There he switched vehicles stealing a purple Hyundai from a customer who had also left the keys in the ignition. As he reached the area of a school near Mae Sot hospital in the stolen Hyundai there was a lot of traffic. A member of the public spotted the errant monk racer and roadblocks were set up. Phra Boy went through those before he was finally cornered at a T-junction as police sirens roared. Phra Boy was coherent but said little to explain his antics. He was taken away to have his urine tested for drugs and to be defrocked ahead of his prosecution. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Chuwit: They buy elections but can't give the people true happiness - firebrand former MP enters World Cup rights debate Daily News Thai Caption: This time they're doing nothing? Daily News Thai Caption: This time they're doing nothing? Former politician and soapy massage boss Chuwit Kamolwisit - a favorite "go to" guy of the Thai media - has entered the fray regarding the showing of World Cup matches in Thailand. FIFA has been offered 600 million baht by the NBTC but there is still a billion baht shortfall meaning Thais may not get to watch the tournament that begins in Qatar on Sunday. Chuwit posted a picture of the World Cup trophy on his Facebook page along with the slogan "Returning True Happiness". That became a watchword of Prayuth Chan-ocha's regime that seized power in 2014. Chuwit said it would only take 200 million baht a person from "five big investors" to really give the people some happiness. Chump change for people who think nothing of loading up people into the back of pick-ups when it's time to vote in elections, reported Daily News. The intimation was clear - they pay people to vote for their preferred candidates with huge cash inducements, this is just a measly one billion. Referring to the ongoing action against the Chinese he said it looks like the Thais will have to be satisfied with looking at Prawit (Wongsuwon, the DPM) rather than the football. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Trairong Suwankiri: Team Prayut’s secret weapon for the next election By Thai PBS World’s Political Desk Trairong Suwankiri’s recent appointment as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s advisor has been hailed as a potential game-changer for the PM’s political future. By Thai PBS World’s Political Desk Trairong Suwankiri’s recent appointment as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s advisor has been hailed as a potential game-changer for the PM’s political future. The veteran politician’s surprise appointment on November 9 came just days after he quit the coalition Democrat Party, where his 38-year membership saw him rise to deputy leader. Trairong claimed that he only learned of his appointment as Prayut’s advisor after tendering his resignation on October 27. The 78-year-old politician’s transfer to Team Prayut coincided with growing speculation that the prime minister will be nominated by a new political party — Ruam Thai Sang Chart (United Thai Nation) — as its PM candidate to contest the next general election. However, Gen Prayut has kept his cards close to his chest, dodging media questions about his political future. In the previous national vote in 2019, Prayut was the sole PM candidate of the Palang Pracharath Party, which went on to form the current coalition government. However, he has left the public guessing over whether he will bid for the premiership with the ruling party again. He has never been a Palang Pracharath member or held an executive post in the party. The two ministers agreed to focus on 3 aspects of industrial promotion. Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit and Japan’s METI minister Nishimura Yasutoshi discussed the cooperation framework for cooperatively developing the economies of both nations. The two ministers expressed their intention to elevate the capability and robustness of the industries of Thailand and Japan. They agreed to focus on 3 aspects of industrial promotion, the first of which is the joint development of digital technology skills among personnel in industries. The second aspect is the driving of the bio-circular-green (BCG) policy in target industries. The third aspect is the strengthening of the supply chain via joint collaborations between the Thai and Japanese private sectors. Mr. Nishimura indicated that Japan remains committed to investing in Thailand. There are many major Japanese companies planning to expand their production bases to Thailand at present. This is especially true for companies involved with the electric vehicle production industry. 2022 data indicates that Japanese investment projects make up 23% of all foreign investment projects in Thailand. Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who has a key responsibility at the cabinet level for internal security in Thailand, ordered a heightened security alert following several incendiary bomb attacks in Pattani province. by Joseph O' Connor Deputy Prime Minister issued a new order to Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) in the South and other agencies to step up already heightened vigilance as the government fears the APEC Summit may be used by subversive and protest groups to highlight their cause and damage the kingdom’s image during the two-day event which is being viewed as important to the country and a watershed moment in its political development. Thai authorities have moved to a heightened sense of alert just days before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Bangkok with the government fearing that subversive elements both within and without the country may use the high-profile event as a protest platform. Over the last few days, senior officials and government spokespeople have urged the public to assist them in reporting any suspicious activity. The latest development is a series of incendiary bombs in Thailand’s southern provinces which had led Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan to order even stronger measures to counter any potential threat. Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, on Wednesday, ordered all security agencies to tighten security even further after a series of petrol stations were bombed in the southern province of Pattani.
