By Thai PBS World It’s been more than a month since a sacked police officer went on a killing spree in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu, yet the families of the victims are still struggling with their grief. “They cry. They still miss their loved ones,” said Chittree Pongsrichai, chief of Nong Bua Lamphu Home for Children and Families. One man moved home to a farm so his surroundings would not remind him of his dead child. In the same neighborhood, a 74-year-old woman bursts into tears every time somebody asks about her family’s empty buffalo pen. Her 53-year-old son, Waranchai Prapaspong, used to raise five buffaloes, but after he was shot dead in the October 6 massacre, the family had no choice but to sell the cattle. Psychological aid After 37 people – mainly young children – were shot or knifed to death in Nong Bua Lamphu’s Uthai Sawan subdistrict by the ex-cop, government agencies and civil networks came forward to offer help to the bereaved. Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board to meet next week to discuss making cannabis an illegal narcotic again, pro-cannabis groups to hold major rally By Adam Judd Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, will meet in Bangkok on Tuesday, November 22nd, to discuss proposals made by cannabis legalization opponents to make the plant an illegal narcotic once again under category 5. By Adam Judd Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, will meet in Bangkok on Tuesday, November 22nd, to discuss proposals made by cannabis legalization opponents to make the plant an illegal narcotic once again under category 5. Cannabis was decriminalized in Thailand in early June of this year but opponents of the decriminalization have been continually stalling final laws for the plant and looking at multiple routes to try to ban the plant once again entirely. Their latest tactic is to meet directly with the Narcotics Control Board to attempt to convince them the plant is a danger to society and make it an illegal narcotic once again. If opponents of the plant’s legalization succeed it could immediately see possession, sales, and cultivation made illegal once again in Thailand and close an estimated thousands of new dispensaries and affect millons of Thais who are now growing and farming the plant at home and engaged in new business opportunities, potentially putting them at risk of prosecution by law enforcement. Opponents of the legalization cite danger to youth, widespread recreational use when the decriminalization was meant for medical only usage, and religious reasons, amongst others, as reasons to re-ban cannabis in Thailand. They claim it is not political despite some opponents openly opposed to Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul and his growing influence before next year’s general election. Anutin was the primary champion of decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand to boost the economy. by Paphamon Arayasukawat BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha met with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in Bangkok on Friday (18 Nov), signing agreements to expand diplomatic relations that were restored this year after more than three decades of downgraded ties. The two leaders presided over the signing of five agreements, pledging to increase trade and investment between the two countries, promote tourism and deepen cooperation in energy. Gen Prayut held bilateral talks with the crown prince on the sidelines of this year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok. Saudi Arabia was invited as a guest of the APEC host country. Ahead of the meetings, Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said, "Cooperation in trade, investment and labor is already underway." The two countries restored full diplomatic ties in January when the Thai premier visited Saudi Arabia at the invitation of the crown prince. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said, "The restoration of ties has mutual benefits for both countries," adding that investment, infrastructure and public health were important areas. Ben Kiatkwankul, partner at government affairs advisory, Maverick Consulting Group, said Saudi Arabia is seeking to diversify the economy away from oil into industries like food and agriculture, which makes Thailand a good partner. He added that Thailand stands to benefit from energy-related projects and medical tourism. Since January, exchanges between the two countries have included an agreement between state-owned energy firms Saudi Aramco and Thailand’s PTT for cooperation in carbon capture and crude oil sourcing. In October, Thailand hosted the Saudi-backed circuit LIV Golf Invitational. Saudi Investment Minister Khalid al-Falih in November also attended a business forum in Bangkok meeting agriculture firms like CP Foods. The White House said the assistance was part of its Net Zero World Initiative, a project launched at last year’s Glasgow climate summit in which the US partners with the private sector and philanthropists to promote clean energy. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Spouses of APEC leaders have visited Ayutthaya province and observed masterpieces of Thai arts and crafts at the Arts of the Kingdom museum. The development presented Thailand with another opportunity to present its capacity in arts and crafts to the global community. Naraporn Chan-o-cha, the spouse of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, led the spouses of APEC leaders from 7 member economies on a trip to Ayutthaya. China’s Peng Liyuan, Indonesia’s Iriana Joko Widodo, Japan’s Yuko Kishida, Philippines’ Louise Araneta-Marcos, and the United States’ Douglas Emhoff were among those who took part. Arts of the Kingdom museum in Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya is a project royally initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. The museum is a site for learning about Thailand’s capacity and successes in sustainable and environmentally friendly development based on the Sufficiency Economy philosophy. Said capacity and successes are in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The delegation of leaders’ spouses viewed various exhibits in the museum and demonstrations of craftsmaking. The museum displays masterpieces by craftsmen at Queen Sirikit Institute, including their early works. The showpieces illustrate Thai craftspeople’s skills and creativity in working with gold, silver, metal, and fabric. The displayed pieces include food containers, weapons, tools, and ornaments. Other art objects include woven handbags and articles, jewel beetle wings, and wooden dolls. Ms. Naraporn also hosted lunch for the spouses’ delegation. She gave an explanation of the souvenir prepared for the delegates, which illustrates the art and wisdom associated with everyday items used by Thais. In another development concerning the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, French president Emmanuel Macron was at Ratchadamnoen Muay Thai stadium yesterday (17 November). He was guided at the boxing stadium by French Muay Thai Fight athletes Antoine Pinto and Leo Pinto. The French leader watched matches and conversed with Thai fighters as well as French students who were studying in Thailand. Mr. Macron posted pictures of his visit to Thailand on his Twitter account @EmmanuelMacron. A photo of him and Thai prime minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha was among the pictures. The photo caption reflected the French leader’s appreciation of the Thai premier having invited him to the APEC leaders’ meeting.
