Mrs. Siriwan Sangaroon, 43, a staffer of a guesthouse in Soi Pattaya Sai Song 9 in Nongprue, Banglamung filed a report to the Pattaya City Police Saturday (November 5th). She told police that there were two foreigners possibly from the Middle East asking her to have a look at a room on the 3rd floor of her guest house yesterday. However, they did not book the room. They said the room was too small before they left. She later found out that two mobile phones charging at the guest house reception counter worth 9,500 baht and 15,000 baht had disappeared. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has approved in principle a plan to massively expand U-Tapao Airport in Rayong province to develop its capacity for accommodating commercial flights by adding a new runway, taxiways and facilities. According to Government Spokesperson Ratchada Dhnadirek, the expansion will serve business operations based in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The aim is to serve up to 60 million yearly passengers and transform the airport closest to the popular tourist city of Pattaya into a major international travel hub. Most passengers are currently being served by Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, along with Phuket International Airport. The U-Tapao expansion was originally launched in October 2019 by the Royal Thai Navy on a budget of 17.77 billion baht. The Ministry of Finance has been tasked with seeking the remaining 16.31 billion baht to fund the project. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s ongoing economic recovery has convinced the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) to revise its forecast on money circulation during this year’s Loy Krathong festival. The university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) predicts 9.7 billion baht will be circulated during the festival - the highest level in 10 years. UTCC President Dr Thanavath Phonvichai noted that the improved pandemic situation enabled the Thai economy to recover faster, allowing for more energized Loy Krathong celebrations. A survey of about 1,200 respondents found that 67.6% of respondents plan to engage in Loy Krathong activities. Meanwhile 76.1% expect to float krathong baskets while 34.9% intend to dine out. 43.5% also hope to make merit and 39.9% plan to visit Loy Krathong festival venues. Only 9.9% of those surveyed say they will not be participating in Loy Krathong festivities, down significantly from last year’s 31.1% figure. The survey also found that people were prepared to spend 1,900 baht on average during the festival, up from last year, with expenditures to include commuting, dining out and socializing. The CEBF therefore expects circulation to reach 9.7 billion baht this year. The 6% expansion over the previous year would thus take Loy Krathong cash flow to a 10-year peak. Dr Thanavath said the average global oil price of US$100 per barrel means people are able to travel and spend more cautiously. Tourism activity and consumer spending are also projected to rise from now until the New Year period. With at least 10 million foreign tourist arrivals currently expected this year, the CEBF believes Thailand’s GDP will expand by 3.3-3.5% in 2022. It further predicts growth of 3.5-4% in 2023. He asked what then would those who could only produce 1 to 7 million litres of beer a year do? For wine it is the same, 600,000 litres a month, while liquor is 40,000 litres a month. According to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), the lunar eclipse is expected to start at 3.02pm and last until 8.56pm (local time) on November 8th. It will be observable in all parts of the world. In Thailand, the moon will appear on the eastern horizon at 5.44pm, but the eclipse will not be seen until it turns blood red for about 57 minutes. Then, gradually, the moon will move out of the Earth’s shadow. Those who are interested in observing this phenomenon and listening to a briefing by astronomers from the NARIT can visit the observatories in Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chachoengsao or Songkhla provinces. Meesak Choonharatchote, president of the Thai Real Estate Association, said Friday that real estate organisations, which include the Thai Condominium Association, the Housing Business Association and 14 other associations, as well as the Thai Chamber of Commerce, will meet on Thursday to discuss the controversial foreign land-ownership issue. He said that the meeting is expected to come up with an alternative proposal, to be sent to the government for consideration. The proposal is to allow foreigners to buy houses in Thailand, but that there should be limits on the sizes of the houses and prices, on top of the requirement that they hold long-term residential visas. Tham Luang Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park is located near Pong Pha village, close to the border town of Mae Sai. The forest park became the focus of global media attention in 2018 when a massive rescue operation, involving rescue teams from many countries, was launched to extract 12 members of the Wild Boar football team and their coach trapped in the flooded cave without food for nine days. After three years of closure, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the park reopened to the public in mid-October. About 1,000 tourists visit the park each weekday, particularly the Tham Luang cave complex, and about 2,000 during weekends.
