Picture: Thai Rath Ban Haet police and rescue services were called after a ten wheel truck plowed into the back of an Isuzu pick-up waiting at the lights yesterday late afternoon. It happened at the Sirinthorn Hospital crossroads on the Mitraphap Highway heading towards Nong Khai in Ban Haet district. The driver of the pick-up and his wife suffered only minor injuries. But a family of four travelling in the bed of the pick-up were thrown onto the road along with their possessions. Picture: Thai Rath Dead at the scene were Chokechai, 38, and his wife Saifon, 39. Their children aged 11 and 8 were rushed to Sirinthorn Hospital with critical injuries, reported Thai Rath. The driver of a Hino truck had picked up a load from Khon Kaen and was heading north. He ended up in the central ditch. Thiap Paenoi, 45, the trucker, said he experienced a microsleep. He was drunk, with a 50 mg result. He admitted to drinking a little. Picture: Thai Rath Pol Capt Preeyathida Sukasa said the family had rented the pick-up to travel from Bangkok to Nong Khai. Police are waiting on reports before charging the trucker. ASEAN NOW notes that some years ago the Thai government tried to ban people travelling in the rear of pick-ups amid safety concerns. The move failed utterly as such carnage on the roads continues unabated. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. By Thanaphum Charoensombatpanich Thailand’s tourism is back on track and hopes are that things are likely to get better going forward amid reports emerging that China is set to open its borders in the very near future. Tourism, which accounts for more than 15% of the gross domestic product (GDP), has seen a sharp recovery over the past few months since July 1st reopening of the Thai borders with more than 7 million visitors having step foot in Thailand since the start of this year. In a statement released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Yuthasak Supasorn, the governor of TAT, came out to say that a total of 7,349,843 visitors entered the borders of Thailand with Malaysian accounting for the biggest market (1,246,242 Malaysian entered Thailand). Opinion – Unfair criticism of Thailand’s immigration is unacceptable although other functions at airports could be improved upon By Thanaphum Charoensombatpanich There is no doubt that the pictures of people standing in long lines at the immigration counter at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport is something that can easily be avoided but is it fair to criticize the work that the immigration staff are doing, and my answer would be a big no. Opinion – By Thanaphum Charoensombatpanich There is no doubt that the pictures of people standing in long lines at the immigration counter at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport is something that can easily be avoided but is it fair to criticize the work that the immigration staff are doing, and my answer would be a big no. The long lines that have been circulating on social media outlets about inbound passengers having to wait for a long time and crowds gathered around the immigration counters and into the hallways leading to the immigration, is not a new phenomenon in Thailand and to be fair to everyone, not uncommon around the world. Pictures of how crowded the Suvarnabhumi airport’s immigration counters were when nearly 80 flights landed on Sunday circulated like wildfire to a point where the Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) came out to accept that these were real pictures and not fake news. Picture: Thai Rath A pre-school in Non Suwan, Buriram went into lockdown after a man believed to be having having a paranoid yaba attack headed for the school armed with a knife. Parents rushed to the school to warn teachers. It happened less than a month since a man killed dozens of children at a nursery in Nong Bua Lamphu. Teacher Daoprakai Kamphuchart said that she'd been trained what to do in such an emergency. The children were doing preparations for next week's Loy Krathong festival. She locked all doors and led the little ones upstairs to the second floor. There were 50 children there at the time and they were not made aware of any problem. Picture: Thai Rath But she said that it was an extremely worrying situation and not something she expected to happen there, reported Thai Rath. Earlier Kongphol "Ming" Sae-la, 30, had attacked his mother Suphaporn Butrawat, 45, in the head and burned his house down. CCTV later revealed that Ming was indeed headed to the school where his 4 year old child is a pupil. He prowled around the area two times. Local mayor Supisara Sringam said there were protocols in place at the nursery. But she expressed concern for how long the authorities would be able to detain the suspect. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The essence of the edict is to allow individuals to produce liquor for household consumption and for commercial purposes if they wish, said Deputy Government Spokesperson Tipanan Sirichana. She explained that it will promote fair competition, equal market access and protect the health and safety of consumers by ensuring that the liquor products are up to standard. The Move Forward Party’s Progressive Liquor Bill was derailed today (Wednesday), when the House of Representatives twice voted against it twice, first by 177:174 votes and then by 196:194 votes. The failure of the Bill to pass was not unexpected, after the government issued an edict yesterday to ease restrictions on the production of liquor and beer, in what was widely seen as an attempt to wrong-foot the opposition Move Forward Party. After the 177:174 vote, with 11 abstentions, Move Forward MP for Bangkok, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, asked Deputy House Speaker Suchart Tancharoen, who chaired the House meeting, for a second roll call vote, due to the close margin in the first. As a result, the Bill, which was touted as a flagship piece of legislation for the Move Forward Party, failed to pass.
