UTCC Projects 9.7 Billion Baht in Loy Krathong Cash Flow This Year by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s ongoing economic recovery has convinced the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) to revise its forecast on money circulation during this year’s Loy Krathong festival. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1276947-utcc-projects-97-billion-baht-in-loy-krathong-cash-flow-this-year/ -
by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s ongoing economic recovery has convinced the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) to revise its forecast on money circulation during this year’s Loy Krathong festival. The university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) predicts 9.7 billion baht will be circulated during the festival - the highest level in 10 years. UTCC President Dr Thanavath Phonvichai noted that the improved pandemic situation enabled the Thai economy to recover faster, allowing for more energized Loy Krathong celebrations. A survey of about 1,200 respondents found that 67.6% of respondents plan to engage in Loy Krathong activities. Meanwhile 76.1% expect to float krathong baskets while 34.9% intend to dine out. 43.5% also hope to make merit and 39.9% plan to visit Loy Krathong festival venues. Only 9.9% of those surveyed say they will not be participating in Loy Krathong festivities, down significantly from last year’s 31.1% figure. The survey also found that people were prepared to spend 1,900 baht on average during the festival, up from last year, with expenditures to include commuting, dining out and socializing. The CEBF therefore expects circulation to reach 9.7 billion baht this year. The 6% expansion over the previous year would thus take Loy Krathong cash flow to a 10-year peak. Dr Thanavath said the average global oil price of US$100 per barrel means people are able to travel and spend more cautiously. Tourism activity and consumer spending are also projected to rise from now until the New Year period. With at least 10 million foreign tourist arrivals currently expected this year, the CEBF believes Thailand’s GDP will expand by 3.3-3.5% in 2022. It further predicts growth of 3.5-4% in 2023. The Royal Thai police, on Saturday, issued a warning to all dog owners in Thailand especially those who own pit bull breeds to meet their legal responsibility to treat the dogs properly while making sure to exercise control and restraint over them after a dangerous incident at the end of October and several deaths and horrific attacks in recent times. Emergency Room admissions for cannabis up 566% as parties call for it to again be criminalised by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health in Nong Khai, on Friday, played down talk of the marijuana bill being defeated in parliament next week after controversial remarks about Democrat Party leader and Ministry of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health in Nong Khai, on Friday, played down talk of the marijuana bill being defeated in parliament next week after controversial remarks about Democrat Party leader and Ministry of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Spat between deputy prime ministers Anutin Charnvirakul and Jurin Laksanawisit over the issue as tensions mount. The Democrat Party and the opposition are adamant that the programme ushered in by Minister Anutin must be reversed amid claims that the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in some commercial products is not being measured and may be far higher than the legal limit allowed while over 90% of the crop being grown by farmers ends up being sold for recreational use for the same reason. A top government agency has also revealed that the number of young people under 20 now using the drug has doubled since it was decriminalised in June. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Bhumjaithai Party, already at the bottom of opinion polls, are facing a continued backlash from his controversial cannabis legalisation policy with Emergency Room (ER) admissions in relation to marijuana up 566% this year so far. It comes as the Democrat Party in the coalition government is now aligning with the opposition calling for the recreational use of cannabis to be made illegal and the drug to be relisted as an illicit narcotic subject to criminal prosecution by the Royal Thai Police. Minster Anutin, this week, was involved in a spat with his cabinet colleague Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit, the Democrat Party leader after he appeared to make personal remarks about Mr Jurin while addressing the possibility of having discussions with him on the matter. It comes as temperatures have risen again after a public spat in recent days between Minister Anutin and his cabinet colleague and fellow deputy prime minister Jurin Laksanawisit, the leader of the Democrat Party. By Thai Newsroom Reporters FORMER POLICE CHIEF Chakthip Chaijinda is known among the rank and file of the Palang Pracharath Party to become one of a trio of the ruling camp’s candidates for prime minister, partisan sources said over the weekend. Chakthip will likely be named one of the speculated trio of Palang Pracharath partisan contestants for head of a post-election government in addition to party boss-cum-Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, the sources said. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the other partisan contender among the Palang Pracharath trio might probably refer to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as earlier speculated. Photo: Matichon By Thai Newsroom Reporters BOTH PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan have been advised to talk it over between themselves as to which one of them will be named a Palang Pracharath partisan candidate for prime minister in the next general election. Palang Pracharath MP Veerakorn Khamprakop suggested Saturday (Nov.5) that Prayut and Prawit, who concurrently performs as top leader of the largest coalition party, come to terms with each other over which one of them will certainly be named partisan contender for head of a post-election government. Veerakorn made his comments amidst uncertainties apparently surrounding future contests for prime minister and sustained speculation that there might probably be a trio of partisan contestants for head of a post-election government instead of a single one as had been the case in the 2019 general election which landed Prayut the unelected premiership. by TNR Staff A Move Forward Party MP said in a Facebook post that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will likely rein in those considering applying for a permit to produce beer and other alcoholic beverages under the new ministerial regulation that came into effect on Wednesday Nov. 2, Matichon newspaper said. Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, Move Forward Party’s MP for Bangkok, said if entrepreneurs thinking of starting a brewery study the new ministerial regulation in detail they will discover that in order to do so they have to pass EIA where a minimum production of 600,000 litres a month, or 7.2 million litres a year, is required for their application to reach the EIA board. He asked what then would those who could only produce 1 to 7 million litres of beer a year do? For wine it is the same, 600,000 litres a month, while liquor is 40,000 litres a month. Thai real estate business operators will propose that the government allow foreigners to buy houses on up to 0.16 hectares (one rai) of land, as an alternative to the right to buy the land on which it sits, for residential purposes, as defined in the Interior Ministry’s edict, which has met with resistance from nationalist groups. Meesak Choonharatchote, president of the Thai Real Estate Association, said Friday that real estate organisations, which include the Thai Condominium Association, the Housing Business Association and 14 other associations, as well as the Thai Chamber of Commerce, will meet on Thursday to discuss the controversial foreign land-ownership issue. He said that the meeting is expected to come up with an alternative proposal, to be sent to the government for consideration. The proposal is to allow foreigners to buy houses in Thailand, but that there should be limits on the sizes of the houses and prices, on top of the requirement that they hold long-term residential visas. Tham Luang Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park is located near Pong Pha village, close to the border town of Mae Sai. The forest park became the focus of global media attention in 2018 when a massive rescue operation, involving rescue teams from many countries, was launched to extract 12 members of the Wild Boar football team and their coach trapped in the flooded cave without food for nine days. After three years of closure, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the park reopened to the public in mid-October. About 1,000 tourists visit the park each weekday, particularly the Tham Luang cave complex, and about 2,000 during weekends.
