The Phuket City Police were notified from a local resident at 5:00 PM yesterday (August 16th) that they saw a body floating in the Bang Yai Canal near Saphan Hin Public Park on Phuket Road in the Talad Yai sub-district, Mueang Phuket. Rescue workers and police arrived at the scene to find the body drifting in the canal face down. The water tide was low at the time the body was found. A face mask and a pair of shoes were found on the side of the canal. No sign of a struggling was found on her body. Police said the woman died at least six hours before her body was recovered. "The reason that prices need to be raised is connected to the four noble truths of Buddhism," he ranted incoherently. "Okay the price has gone up, it has to go up. Look at the cause - look at Buddhist teaching. "Educate yourselves - ask yourselves why?" Eleven Coordinated Fire-Bombings In Southern Provinces By Editor Ten convenience stores and a gas station in three restive southern provinces were fire-bombed by suspected insurgents last night (Tuesday) in what local authorities believe to have been coordinated attacks intended to stir unrest. According to initial reports, no one was injured. Many of the 7-Eleven convenience stores attacked were located in gas stations. According to the Yala Today webpage, a Bangchak gas station in Bo Thong sub-district of Pattani was attacked. Flames from the gas pump spread to a Mini Big C store, an oil tanker and two other trucks parked at the gas station. The second attack took place at a Mini Big C convenience store in Thung Yang Daeng district of the same province. Three 7-Elevens and a Mini Big C convenience store in Yaha, Raman, Bannang Sata and Muang districts of Yala were also firebombed. Shortly before midnight, a police unit in Yaha district rushed to a convenience store at a gas station, after they were alerted to a suspicious bag in the store, left by a suspect whose face was covered by a head scarf. Four 7-Elevens and a Mini Big C convenience store in Cho-airong, Bacho, Si Sakhon and Su-ngai Kolok districts in Narathiwat province were also attacked with firebombs. The 4th Army Region, which is responsible for security in the southern provinces, is yet to issue a statement or give a press conference about the attacks. Southern insurgents have been waging a protracted campaign of violence against the Thai government in their efforts to gain self-determination in the Deep South. Peace talks between the Thai military and insurgent groups, particularly the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), facilitated by Malaysia, have been on and off and have made little headway. Sanook reported with a video on the amusing efforts of a group of 20 men to capture a female deer that got out from a pen at a temple in Samut Prakan. The 5 year old female had first been spotted on Monday night in heavy rain before it went into hiding and the hunt was abandoned for the night. When it reemerged yesterday afternoon rescue teams, firemen, temple staff and vets joined the hunt. Traffic had to be held up on King Kaew Road as a man with a large net tried - and failed - to browbeat bambi. Eventually the deer was cornered in an area of waste ground and shot with a tranquilizer dart. A metal strip that came loose from a six wheel truck doing work on the expressway part of Rama 2 Road pierced through a "Safety First" sign and damaged a woman's car. It was the third accident during construction on the road in recent weeks. Thitikarn, 50, said she was driving from Sai Mai to Hua Hin to see a customer. She was in her Honda Civic in the far right lane of the fast section when she glanced to her right and saw a metal strip appear through a "Plot Phai Wai Korn" (safety first) sign. It hit the underside of her vehicle causing extensive damage to the fender at the front. She said it was lucky that cars coming up at the rear didn't go into her as she braked and put on her hazard lights. Daily News had a picture of the 3 meter long metal strip that they said was used to contain cement. A highways department official admitted it had come loose from a 6 wheel truck during building work and assessors had spoken to the lady to agree compensation. In recent weeks two people were killed in a U-Turn bridge collapse accident and then tons of water from a canvas awning crashed down on a woman in a car. This accident happened outbound in the Samae Dam area heading towards Samut Sakhon. Dozens of kilometers of construction work on the road has made it a traffic nightmare for several years, notes ASEAN NOW. They said it was the latest in a long line of stories over the years where teachers - who have to train for five years before getting a job - were paid less than 10K a month. Comments were rife with those who agreed with the salary saying it was good work experience and if someone lived economically they could cope with a low salary such as this. Others pointed out that it was barely enough for food let alone travel to work costs and other daily expenses. Details of the post indicated that formal positions could be taken up after 3 years and in reality it referred more to teaching assistants. However, ASEAN NOW notes that even teaching assistants can expect to earn more than this in many schools. Thailand's monthly minimum wage currently stands at around 10,000 baht according to information widely available online. Several monks and novices were busy praying on Monday afternoon when the ceramic tiles started to collapse. Within seconds a huge section of the ceiling was raining down on the saffron clad holy men. It happened at Wat Chantharasee in Ban Nong Bua, Muang district. It followed torrential rain for a day and night with an initial investigation ascertaining that rain got in and the ceiling was unable to bear the weight. It focuses specifically on a US military combat veteran, however, gives a lot of insight behind the scenes into what happens in general when a foreign national passes away in Thailand. This is part one of four that we will post over the next week or so. -Adam Judd, Chief Editor, The Pattaya News English Chapter 1 On average one US citizen passes away in Thailand. ONE a day. This death begins a series of events that involve many different individuals from a variety of organizations. For us, that day was 25 July 2022. On that day the ONE individual who passed away was a US Navy Combat Veteran. ONE US Veteran of the hundreds that die daily. I want to try and share our experience and involvement with this ONE US Veteran. We are members of the American Legion Post TH02 in Pattaya Thailand. On the 25th of July, a US Navy Combat Veteran passed away quietly in his hotel room in Pattaya. That was the day the owner and wife of the hotel discovered our Veteran association. The hotel owners start this process with a call to the local Pattaya police. A Pattaya police officer responded to the hotel. He immediately secured the room and called for an ambulance. The ambulance responded and transported our veteran to the nearest public hospital. The veteran arrives at the hospital where the attending physician makes the declaration of death. The police officer in the meantime continues with his investigation. He searches through the personal possessions to establish an ID of the individual. He secures the veteran’s possessions and takes them to the police station to begin his task. The room is secured and the hotel staff is instructed to keep the room locked until he releases it.
