The badly dented Ferrari was found in the compound of the family's home. File photo OPINION The ongoing case against Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya is becoming farcical. We now hear that the Attorney General has explained this week that the statute of limitations on cocaine use charge against Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, who is wanted in a hit-and-run incident that led to a policeman’s death in Bangkok on September 3, 2012, has now expired. This now leaves the lawsuit on the charge of reckless driving leading to death, however the statute of limitations on this too will expire in September 2027. The whole episode is becoming like a script for a mega drama movie. Back in November 2021 the House Committee for Police Affairs told by senior police officers that Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, is believed to be hiding in Austria., The committee proposed the introduction of more initiative-taking measures in tracking down the suspect such as sending a police team overseas to search for him but was told that there was a budget problem in doing so. Police added that they had sent letters to various countries to get the suspect’s address and received replies from many of them. Interpol had also issued a red notice on this case. When asked whether police had questioned the suspect’s family about his whereabouts, they said they had not because the other family members were not involved in this case and would in any case protect him. Police Investigation Separately there is a police investigation of 18 police officers accused of preventing the prosecution of the suspect and four others accused of changing the vehicle’s speed. As there are still many issues surrounding this case which the police representatives did not clarify with MPs too raising questions about this case in Parliament. This committee will hold talks with the Anti-Corruption and Misconduct and the Law, Justice and Human Rights committees then invite police officers at the policy level to come and give an explanation. Chalerm Yoovidhya (Chinese: 許書恩; pinyin: Xǔ Shū'ēn; born 1950) is a Thai billionaire businessperson and heir to the Red Bull fortune. As of 2020, Forbes estimates his net worth at US$20.2 billion. The sometimes-farcical attempts by the Thai authorities to bring Mr Vorayuth to justice are now commonly cited as epitomising the untouchability of the super-rich in Thailand. The police believe from security camera videos, the distance the car travelled after the crash, and the injuries that instantly killed Sergeant-Major Wichian, that Mr Vorayuth must have been speeding, they estimate at around 170km/h (106mph) in an 80km/h zone. His lawyers have denied this. Throughout 2013, Mr Vorayuth failed to appear seven times to hear the charges, with his lawyers providing an array of justifications, from him being on business overseas to feeling unwell. In September 2013, the limitation period for the speeding charge expired. Mr Vorayuth's grandfather, Chaleo Yoovidhya, made his fortune when, in the mid-1980s, he teamed up with an Austrian marketing executive to turn his energy drink known as Kratindaeng, or Red Bull, into a global sales success. Today the extended Yoovidhya family is believed to be worth more than $20bn (£16bn). The Red Bull logo is now seen all over the world, in particular sponsoring spectacular stunts and sporting events. Public interest renewed Public interest in it was revived only after a horrifying road accident last year, involving another wealthy young man who drove his luxury car at high speed into another vehicle, killing two graduate students. People started asking what had happened to the Red Bull heir. And a military government, which had promised to address the abuses of previous governments, felt forced to act. Or, perhaps more accurately, to be seen to be acting. Today the police still insist they can do nothing. Asked why they have not issued an arrest warrant against the accused, as requested three and a half years ago, they told the BBC that it is up to the Attorney-General's office to act. The Attorney-General's office says he cannot be indicted unless he appears in person. And for the latest request for him to report to the prosecutor's office to hear those charges? Mr Vorayuth, we are now told by his lawyers, is on business in the UK. The Attorney-General has once again granted a postponement, to next month. Meanwhile the relatives of Sergeant-Major Wichian have said little about the case. As usually happens in these situations, the Yoovidhya family allegedly have paid them a generous sum of money, around $100,000. In return they have agreed not to press charges themselves. Had it been someone else, without a powerful family behind him, he said, he would certainly have been arrested the first time he failed to report himself. The most serious charge against Mr Vorayuth, of reckless driving causing death, expires in the year 2027. Few people are betting that he will face any legal sanction, or indeed any meaningful restrictions on his lifestyle before that deadline frees him completely from any lingering repercussions of the events of that morning four and a half years ago. This sorry saga continues. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Bad loser! Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath went to investigate in Treum sub-district of Surin in north eastern Thailand after someone burned down a shack at KM marker 8 on a road in the area. The shack had been set up by locals after a termite mound at the marker managed to supply - via divination - the numbers for several lottery wins. Amid some ornamental chickens and plenty of colored water the shack had been set up to facilitate the faithful. Picture: Siam Rath However, the termite mound had been removed earlier now there had been a fire in the middle of the night. The place had failed to deliver the numbers in the latest state lottery draw on Monday and it's believed a disgruntled punter was responsible for the retribution. Kian, 66, did some vital pointing at the scene - presumably where the termites once reigned - and said that she hoped the person who did it will be visited with nothing but misery. ASEAN NOW notes that many Thais take the lottery very seriously. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Korat gold shop robber arrested: He pretended to limp to fool cops and planned to open a ganja farm Amarin Thai Caption: He pretended to be a limping robber Amarin TV reported on the arrest of a fourth year student at a well known university in Nakhon Ratchasima who robbed the Saengmanee gold shop on Jomphol Road in downtown Korat last Wednesday. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1267819-korat-gold-shop-robber-arrested-he-pretended-to-limp-to-fool-cops-and-planned-to-open-a-ganja-farm/ -
Amarin Thai Caption: He pretended to be a limping robber Amarin TV reported on the arrest of a fourth year student at a well known university in Nakhon Ratchasima who robbed the Saengmanee gold shop on Jomphol Road in downtown Korat last Wednesday. He got away with just over 150,000 baht's worth of gold, five baht weight, but his elaborate plan soon unravelled. He was named as 24 year old Pornthep. His relatives called him a "naughty boy who needs to face up to what he did". Picture: Amarin TV Amarin is a media well known for going into every last detail of a crime and did just that in this extensive report. Pornthep has admitted what he did. Firstly he drove his motorcycle to a fishing pond called Hua Thalay where he stole a motorcycle to use in the robbery. After brandishing what he claimed was a fake gun at staff in the shop and making off with the loot he dumped his clothes, the stolen bike and other items at the Suranaree University of Technology. The gun was put in the trash on the way he later claimed. From the uni he went back in a Grab taxi to the fish pond where he retrieved his own bike. He was later arrested after going home. Picture: Amarin TV Four of the items of gold were recovered intact and the suspect had tried to melt down the fifth as a "trial". He has been charged with armed robbery and theft of a motorcycle. Police said he came up with the plan in a single day and executed it immediately. They disputed the idea that he had financial worries as he hadn't tried to sell the gold straight away. They said he was going to use the cash to start a marijuana farm. The limp that was seen on CCTV was just to try and fool the police. Amarin also spoke to a relative of the robber who said he was a naughty boy. They had no excuses for him and he needed to man up to what he'd done and face the consequences. They confirmed he had never spoken of financial problems. The staff at the gold shop expressed relief and were happy now that the perp had been caught and were glad to get back the gold even if some of it had been damaged. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Closure of Mae Fah Luang airport runway extended until Friday night Thailand’s Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai international airport has announced an extension to the closure of the airport’s runway, until Friday night, to facilitate the removal of Nok Air’s disabled Boeing 737-800, which is partially blocking the runway. According to the airport’s director, Squadron-Leader Somchanok Tiamtiabrat, the removal team had succeeded in lifting the embedded main landing gear and had moved the aircraft six meters from the original site by about noon yesterday (Tuesday), but the landing gear got stuck in the muddy ground again, following heavy rain the night before. He said that more equipment will have to be brought in to complete the work and that will take more time. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on the continuing problems of a Nok Air flight that skidded off the runway in heavy rain at Mae Fah Luang airport, Chiang Rai. The airport remains closed and may not even reopen tomorrow when it was planned to do so. The front of the plane sank into the turf so airbags were used to raise the nose cone section and a trailer was used to haul the aircraft out by the Aircraft Recovery Team. However, this only made the back wheels sink around half way up into the rain softened ground. They succeeded in moving the aircraft just one meter. This despite a metal plate being inserted to effect the removal of the aircraft. So the team decided to get a concrete plate from Khon Kaen meaning yet further delays in the operation. Meanwhile the media reported that it would be two weeks before an investigation concludes as to why it was 90 minutes before the plane was evacuated. Parking charges from July 30th to August 3rd have been scrapped at the airport. Runways checks will be needed before the airport can reopen. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Daily News Thai Caption: Kid's birthday surprise hurt Daily News reported that Suphat Inthachart, 43, a seller of crepes, went to the Bang Yai police yesterday evening to report an online fraud. Suphat told Pol Capt Thanakrit Salangam that he had ordered a Redmi 10 phone from a site on Facebook for his 15 year old son's birthday. When the item was delivered he transferred 1,150 baht and accepted the package clearly without opening it. When he did he found a couple of cheap purses inside worth less than 100 baht each. Attempts to contact the seller were fruitless. He told the press he was very disappointed and said these con artists are making life a misery for hard working people trying to make a living in tough times. He said that the person responsible will not just get money but bad karma. It was a sin. ASEAN NOW suggests that the buyer was trying to get something on the cheap. A phone of this make retails on Shopee for 4,450 baht and Lazada for 4,399. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. by Editor The Phetchaburi Municipality has been meeting to consider the possibility of introducing a system of more one-way traffic locations in the city. The project raises the question of whether more one-way traffic roads may be considered for other regional centres where traffic congestion frequently occurs, especially during holiday periods. Mr. Somchai Lertprasitphan Deputy Governor along with Mr. Kittipong Theppanich, Mayor of Phetchaburi have co-chaired the meeting. The project aims to resolve traffic issues, problems and obstacles being experienced by road users, including public transport operators and for shop keepers. In the past some one-way roads have been introduced but the municipality has been advised that a system should be more comprehensive to resolve the traffic issues. It was noted that some roads in the city area are no more than five metres wide, making it difficult for vehicles to pass each other. The process will now conduct surveys and seek more community input over the next 60 days.
