By Panithan Onthaworn Thailand’s government planning unit said on Wednesday the country’s economy is set to grow by 3 per cent in 2022 and 3.7 per cent in 2023, driven by recovery in the tourism sector. “Many economic engines are expanding, particularly exports and tourism,” Danucha Pichayanan, head of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), said at a business seminar on Wednesday. Danucha revealed that in the first five months of this year Thailand welcomed around 2 million foreign visitors. He expects between 7 to 10 million for the whole year, which is still significantly below pre-Covid levels of 40 million. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok has unveiled a plan to improve the city’s ability to deal with ultra-fine particulate matter, noting that more accurate and transparent data on dust sources is essential to its success. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said a digital platform will be used to disseminate to the public information such as the amount of toxic fumes produced by factories and the response of each district office to sources of air pollution. At a recent meeting, he said efforts to address the PM2.5 issue in the nation’s capital will gain momentum once sufficient access to this data is available. He added that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is collaborating with universities to analyze and identify the major sources of PM2.5 in the city, as well as to discuss prompt and effective solutions to the problem with relevant government agencies. According to the governor, the BMA is also monitoring the implementation of measures launched on June 10 by the Department of Industrial Works that require factories to disclose data on their pollution levels, as well as a recent public campaign urging motorists to switch to public transportation and for Bangkok residents to plant more trees whenever possible. The agency is now planning to increase the number of PM2.5 measuring stations in the city from 50 to at least 1,000 in order to improve data reporting accuracy. Additionally, the BMA has begun distributing free face masks to vulnerable groups capable of protecting against PM2.5 and communicable diseases, as well as instructing schools and hospitals to establish safe zones or particulate-free areas to shelter personnel and students when PM2.5 levels are particularly high, typically between November and March. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Cabinet decrees April 3rd every year will be "National Groundwater Day" - ten days before Songkran Picture: Siam Rath The Thai government has decreed that henceforth every April 3rd will be known as "National Groundwater Day". Picture: Siam Rath The Thai government has decreed that henceforth every April 3rd will be known as "National Groundwater Day". This decision was taken by the cabinet and delighted Sakda Wichiansin of the Department of Groundwater Resources who said it will focus everyone on this vital resource. Groundwater is water found underground in the cracks and spaces between soil, sand and rocks. Siam Rath quoted Government House spokeswoman Rachada Thanadirek as saying that the first ground water bore hole in Thailand at a hospital in Yaowarat, Bangkok, was drilled in the time of Rama V (1868-1910). The Groundwater Resources website says, in English, that this was in 1907 and was installed by Mr. Sengyang Sei Aow. His company drilled a 120 meter deep well using a bamboo drill rod imported from China. A groundwater project in Kanchanaburi was initiated by the royal family on April 3rd this year. ASEAN NOW notes that the new national day comes just ten days before the Songkran festival when millions of Thais waste huge amounts of water throwing it over each other. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. By Thai PBS World’s General Desk Branded a breeding ground of corruption by newly elected Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Krungthep Thanakom Co Ltd is set for a major transformation under his administration. Chadchart’s chosen man, Prof Tongthong Chandransu has taken over as chairman and president of the state enterprise, which functions as City Hall’s investment arm. He is expected to inject transparency and efficiency into the operation, in line with Chadchart’s campaign pledge. Krungthep Thanakom has often been linked with big scandals that have hit the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) over the years. The company has handled many multibillion-baht projects, including those related to the BTS Green Line, BTS Gold Line, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), waste collection and disposal, and the scheme to bury Bangkok’s snarl of overhead cables. Bones of contention Chadchart has vowed to lift the veil of mystery surrounding Krungthep Thanakom’s involvement in mega projects. For instance, the public still has no idea about the details of the controversial contract, signed by the BMA through Krungthep Thanakom, granting Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) the concession to run the BTS Green Line until 2042. It is also a mystery as to how the BMA financed the 25-billion-baht project to bury cables. Locals in Muang district of Krabi went to Siam Rath for help because of the deplorable state of a popular road that leads to many tourist attractions and ports popular with foreign visitors. At a T-junction called Nong Thua Raet they found three meter long ruts, 20-25 centimeters wide and 10 cm deep. Local Krajang Sobutr fears out of town tourists could have serious accidents particularly on rented motorcycles. Even the locals with low vehicles with heavy loads are in trouble. Many times they have reported the trouble but someone just comes along with a bucket of asphalt and fills it it. It doesn't last. The holes appear again and are even worse than before. Krajang wants to see a more permanent solution to stop people coming off their bikes. Apart from leading to tourism attractions and ports it is also a main route to the Ao Nang beach. Pre-andemic that area was a kind of "mini-Scandinavia" notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath A U-turn in Muang district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on the way to southern Thailand has been dubbed "The U-Turn of Death". Road safety expert at the highways department Suphot Sermsap has been working on ways to improve the Ban Bung area where there are 15-16 accidents annually causing lots of death and injury. Two children were thrown out of a pick-up and killed at the U-turn in February last year. Now there are nearly 30 million baht plans for a new one 400 meters from the old one. Picture: Siam Rath The problem with the old one is that it is by an intersection and what with being on a fast, straight stretch accidents occur frequently. Just sealing it off is not an option as the area is densely populated and people need a uey. Meetings have taken place with traffic police and other authorities as Suphot's plan for improvements take shape. An artist's impression of the new plan was published by Siam Rath. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
