More than 100 adults and children are now taking temporary refuge at the local youth centre, after about 30 houses were burned down or heavily damaged in a two-hour blaze yesterday (Tuesday). 12 people were sent to hospital to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. Support and repair payments will be issued to those injured or have lost property, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. Chadchart returned to the Bon Kai community late Tuesday night to visit the victims of yesterday’s blaze and to ensure that they are being provided with the help they need by Pathumwan district office, including a new shelter in case they are not rehoused for an extended time. The governor said that the owners of any houses that were razed or severely damaged will receive 5,000 baht as initial compensation, whereas those who were tenants will receive 3,000. Groundwater is water found underground in the cracks and spaces between soil, sand and rocks. Siam Rath quoted Government House spokeswoman Rachada Thanadirek as saying that the first ground water bore hole in Thailand at a hospital in Yaowarat, Bangkok, was drilled in the time of Rama V (1868-1910). The Groundwater Resources website says, in English, that this was in 1907 and was installed by Mr. Sengyang Sei Aow. His company drilled a 120 meter deep well using a bamboo drill rod imported from China. A groundwater project in Kanchanaburi was initiated by the royal family on April 3rd this year. Chadchart’s chosen man, Prof Tongthong Chandransu has taken over as chairman and president of the state enterprise, which functions as City Hall’s investment arm. He is expected to inject transparency and efficiency into the operation, in line with Chadchart’s campaign pledge. Krungthep Thanakom has often been linked with big scandals that have hit the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) over the years. The company has handled many multibillion-baht projects, including those related to the BTS Green Line, BTS Gold Line, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), waste collection and disposal, and the scheme to bury Bangkok’s snarl of overhead cables. Bones of contention Chadchart has vowed to lift the veil of mystery surrounding Krungthep Thanakom’s involvement in mega projects. For instance, the public still has no idea about the details of the controversial contract, signed by the BMA through Krungthep Thanakom, granting Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) the concession to run the BTS Green Line until 2042. Locals in Muang district of Krabi went to Siam Rath for help because of the deplorable state of a popular road that leads to many tourist attractions and ports popular with foreign visitors. At a T-junction called Nong Thua Raet they found three meter long ruts, 20-25 centimeters wide and 10 cm deep. Local Krajang Sobutr fears out of town tourists could have serious accidents particularly on rented motorcycles. Even the locals with low vehicles with heavy loads are in trouble. Many times they have reported the trouble but someone just comes along with a bucket of asphalt and fills it it. It doesn't last. The holes appear again and are even worse than before. Krajang wants to see a more permanent solution to stop people coming off their bikes. Apart from leading to tourism attractions and ports it is also a main route to the Ao Nang beach. Road safety expert at the highways department Suphot Sermsap has been working on ways to improve the Ban Bung area where there are 15-16 accidents annually causing lots of death and injury. Two children were thrown out of a pick-up and killed at the U-turn in February last year. Now there are nearly 30 million baht plans for a new one 400 meters from the old one. Just sealing it off is not an option as the area is densely populated and people need a uey. Meetings have taken place with traffic police and other authorities as Suphot's plan for improvements take shape. The "Tua Ngern Tua Thong" - referred to as "Big Size" in the Thai media - was lurking on the ground floor by the stairs. As rescue teams tried to make a grab for the four meter long monster it managed to wriggle free and went upstairs to the second floor of the four story business premises. There after a half hour or more it was caught, tied up and subsequently returned to nature. Sukanya Yoophan, 28, said she was in the back of a pick-up outside the firm when she head dogs barking and saw the creature enter the premises. She called for help. She said she was lucky she had not been inside at the time as it might have bitten her. She said she would be going to buy lots of lottery tickets and hoped to win big.
