  1. Phuket—On March 3rd, 2024, Mr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the Deputy leader of the United Thai Nation, publicly revealed after visiting Phuket last week to inspect and gather information regarding an allegation of foreign mafia gangs in the area. Phuket is one of the most popular Thai tourist attractions among foreign tourists. However, it was found out that the quantity was greater than the quality in terms of businesses in Phuket, remarked Thanakorn. Meanwhile, many street vendors and tourism-related workers complained about alleged foreign mafia gangs in the Phuket local, mostly Russian nationals, taking over Thai people’s businesses, stated Thanakorn. The foreign mafia gangs reportedly were not afraid of laws as they allegedly smuggled illicit substances to their entertainment venues and were wealthy, paying off corrupt officials to avoid legal action, said Thanakorn. He wanted to reflect on the local problems and provide insight to the Thai Prime Minister and Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, for urgent inspection. Furthermore, it was reported that traffic congestion in Phuket had been an issue for a long time. After acknowledging the issue, the Thai Prime Minister issued an order to Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, the Thai Minister of Transport, and relevant agencies to take immediate action and expand new routes to Phuket Airport. 5. A shocking incident unfolded in the heart of Bangkok when a man, reportedly close friends with the victim, pulled a gun and opened fire in a violent dispute over personal matters before fleeing with a fake gold necklace. The altercation, which took place in the Ladprao area, has left locals alarmed and law enforcement officers on high alert as they hunt for the assailant. Yesterday, around 4.46pm, a 30 year old man from Yala province found himself the target of an armed attack amidst the bustling streets of Bangkok’s Wang Thonglang district. The victim, who was riding a motorcycle with a friend, was pursued by two individuals on a brown Yamaha Grand Filano motorbike with the registration 5ขท138 Bangkok. The chase ended with the assailant demanding the victim’s necklace at gunpoint. In a state of panic, the victim handed over a 30-gram fake gold chain to the armed perpetrator, who then sped away with his accomplice. The victim, having survived the traumatic ordeal, reported the crime at the Wang Thonglang police station, reported KhaoSod. The deputy inspector at Wang Thonglang police station, Jidapha Kerdmeephod, was notified of the robbery and immediately initiated an investigation alongside the station chief, Jesada Yangnok, and his deputy, Aphichok Kanabadi. Their inquiries led to a review of CCTV footage from the area, which corroborated the victim’s account of the aggressive pursuit and subsequent gunfire, with two shots being confirmed. Upon further interrogation, the 23 year old victim identified the main aggressor as Ibrohem, from Yala province, a one-time close friend. The dispute between the two reportedly stemmed from a previous loan of 7,000 baht (US$196), which the victim insisted he had repaid in full. However, Ibrohem claimed otherwise. The situation was further complicated by personal relationships, as the victim’s girlfriend had subsequently become involved with Ibahem, leading to an ongoing conflict between the two men. The police are now vigorously seeking the whereabouts of Ibrohem to bring him to justice. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-03-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 6. Thai authorities dismantle illegal border communication networks by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod A coordinated effort by the Thai Cyber Police, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has led to the successful crackdown on illegal communication networks along Thailand’s border. 7. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod A coordinated effort by the Thai Cyber Police, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has led to the successful crackdown on illegal communication networks along Thailand’s border. The operation, which took place today, March 2, resulted in the dismantling of illicit signal towers and the confiscation of thousands of unauthorized SIM cards, cutting off vital support to call centre gangs and financially backed criminal groups. The collaborative operation was initiated after intelligence pointed to the establishment of call centre gangs and their supporting networks on neighbouring islands opposite Thailand’s Ranong province. These islands, identified as Koh Son, Koh Song, and Koh Koo, were found to be backed by financiers providing the technological means to facilitate their activities. The investigation and evidence-gathering process led to the pinpointing of various locations where illegal signal towers were erected and SIM boxes—a technology used to house electronic SIM cards—were installed. The first location, an area near a pier in the Pak Nam sub-district of Ranong province, was found to house an illegal signal tower. A second similar setup was located next to a restaurant, and a third within a private residence, both in the same sub-district. Additionally, an installation site for SIM boxes and a distribution point for unauthorised SIM cards were discovered in the Bang Rin sub-district. Police were able to seize the equipment and pursue legal action against the perpetrators, reported KhaoSod. Further investigation revealed a concentrated movement of call centre gangs and their networks along the border areas of Ranong province and neighbouring countries. Utilising specialised tools such as spectrum analysers, the officials were able to track and analyse the spread of signals from multiple clandestine radio communication stations. These stations were illegally distributing internet and mobile phone signals to support the criminal groups’ operations across the border into Myanmar. As a result of the findings, a concerted effort involving the Cyber Police unit from the NBTC and the DSI was launched to pursue and eradicate these gangs. Three illegal radio communication stations were apprehended, along with the seizure of related equipment, in violation of the Radio Communications Act and the Telecommunications Business Act. Moreover, the crackdown on ghost SIMs led to the apprehension of thousands of SIM cards in violation of the Act on the Prevention and Suppression of Technology Crimes. In the aftermath, the police dismantled and confiscated all unauthorised radio stations, SIM boxes, and SIM cards. The suspects were apprehended and handed over to investigative officers for legal proceedings. This operation effectively thwarted the gangs’ easy access to the internet and mobile phone signals. Continuing the momentum, the police responsible for the border areas, in collaboration with relevant agencies, are committed to ongoing surveillance and law enforcement against similar criminal activities, ensuring a sustained effort to maintain the integrity of Thailand’s telecommunications infrastructure. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-03-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The incident involves a Swiss man named Urs ‘David’ Fehr and his Thai wife. The steps in question were initially thought to be part of the couple’s private property, leading to a confrontation and alleged kicking incident with a Thai doctor and her friend who were sitting on the steps at night. However, it was later discovered that the majority of the steps were encroaching on public beach land and did not belong to the couple at all. Authorities have ordered the demolition of these steps. Additionally, it was later discovered the property was a rental and not owned by the couple. In a situation that will likely frustrate the true owner of the condo, they are being summoned for legal action as well due to land encroachment onto the beach. 23. Pattaya, Thailand– The tranquil shores of Jomtien Beach have long been a haven for residents seeking a quieter alternative to bustling Pattaya. However, recent changes to the road system have left many locals frustrated and divided. The One-Way Dilemma Starting from March 1st, Jomtien Beach Road started an ambitious beach area construction project. The stretch from the Dongtan Beach police box to the Chaiyapreuk intersection was transformed into a one-way street for at least eighteen months. While this decision aimed to enhance the beachfront experience, it has sparked heated debates among residents. It also led to confusion and, to be fair, many people not following the new rules unless police were present. Tourists vs. Locals The heart of the issue lies in the clash between what tourists desire and what long-time residents value. Jomtien has traditionally been known for its tranquility, attracting expats seeking a peaceful lifestyle away from the vibrant chaos of central Pattaya. However, the expansion of Na Jomtien Beach and subsequent influx of tourists have altered the landscape. The Beach Expansion The restoration of the once-eroded Na Jomtien Beach was a necessary step. The new beach attracted both domestic Thai tourists and international visitors, boosting the local economy. 25. Update: Locals demand justice in Swiss expat alleged assault case by Nattapong Westwood Photo co urtesy of Bangkok Post Residents of Phuket are set to converge on Yamu Beach in Thalang district today, enraged by an incident involving a Swiss expat accused of kicking a local woman for simply sitting on steps near his beachfront villa. The Swiss expat, 45 year old Urs Fehr, also known by the name David, purportedly delivered a kick to Dr Thandao Chandam, a respected figure at Dibuk Hospital, as she enjoyed a peaceful moonlit moment with a friend outside his residence on the evening of February 24. Adding fuel to the fire, David’s wife, Khanuengnit, reportedly joined in, unleashing a verbal tirade at the doctor. Dr Thandao wasted no time in filing a formal complaint with the authorities, alleging assault. In a twist to the tale, the Swiss expat and his wife claimed they mistook the victims for Chinese tourists who had allegedly trespassed earlier. Although David offered an apology, locals are clamouring for his expulsion and the restoration of the beach to its rightful owners. As tensions escalated, the couple found themselves summoned to Thalang Police Station to face charges of physical assault, with police poised to escalate the case to the Phuket Kwaeng Court. Adding intrigue, investigations revealed the villa’s steps, supposedly the epicentre of the altercation, encroached upon public beach land. Pa Klok Subdistrict Municipality launched a formal complaint against Phuket Peninsula Estate Co Ltd, the overseeing entity of the villa project, uncovering further encroachments, reported Bangkok Post. Pa Klok Subdistrict Mayor Panya Sampaorat expressed dismay at the discovery, pointing out additional structures, wooden stairs and a lounging area, encroaching on the public beach, sparking fresh outrage among residents. ORIGINAL STORY: Beach blunder: Swiss man and wife regret assaulting Thai doctor in Phuket (video) An underfire Swiss man and his Thai wife apologised to a Thai doctor for physically assaulting and insulting her after she innocently sat on the steps to their beachside villa. The foreign man claims the incident was an accident, stating that he mistakenly identified the victim and her friend as a previous Chinese trespasser. The Thai doctor, 26 year old Tarndao Chandam, insisted on pursuing the charge against the Swiss man, 45 year old Urs Fehr, for physically assaulting her on the beach near Yamu Cape in the Thalang district of Phuket on February 24. Tarndao told the public that the Swiss expat kicked her from behind while his wife insulted her and threatened to use her connection with high-ranking police to put the doctor in jail for trespassing. Fehr came forward to reveal that he did not mean to attack or kick the Thai woman in the back. He insists that he accidentally kicked her while he was stumbling on the steps to his rental property. Fehr’s Thai lawyer confirmed this information, stating he saw the video of the incident and confirmed that it was clearly an accident. The video was later shared on Thai social media and went viral. Many netizens agreed that the incident was a physical assault and not an accident as mentioned by Fehr and his lawyer. In the 17-second video, Fehr is seen walking toward Tarndao and her friend, who were sitting on the steps. Fehr can be heard shouting, “Get the f*ck out of here!” It is followed by a thud sound. However, the video did not show clearly whether it came from a kick or a trip. Swiss apology Fehr and his Thai wife held a press conference today, March 1, to share their side of the story and apologise to the victim. The wife explained that a few days earlier, a Chinese woman entered their villa premises while she was swimming and frightened her. She reported the incident to the accommodation’s juristic person to remove the Chinese man from the area. Fehr’s wife informed him of the incident, making him worried. According to his wife, her husband approached Tarndao and her friend and shouted vulgarities at them thinking they were the Chinese nationals she mentioned. The wife issued an apology to the doctor and her friend, explaining that she was sleepy and angry at the time, leading to an inappropriate conversation with the victims. She emphasised that she did not mean to threaten or insult anyone. She also admitted mentioning her connection with a high-ranking police officer, clarifying that her son is a police officer but his rank is only a police sergeant. She added that if she had known the doctor and her friend were medical workers, she would have invited them to rest inside her villa. Fehr apologised to the doctor as well. He said he did not intend to harm her but was worried about the Chinese trespasser. He added that he recorded a video of the incident to file a complaint to the accommodation’s juristic person about the invasion. Fehr’s Thai lawyer also issued an apology to the public, acknowledging that his interpretation of the video footage differed from the prevailing viewpoint. He reiterated that he perceived the incident as an accident and emphasised that his defence of Fehr was not motivated by financial considerations. Currently, the police have not issued any updates regarding the legal proceedings of the case. Tarndao declared on February 29 her intention to pursue compensation from Fehr, with the funds earmarked for beach maintenance and preservation initiatives.
