I doubt people would be that bothered about not going to America in the future, the record is the main thing like you say for some jobs, but as long as you've served your sentence and declared it on the application and it's non violent/fraud they really can't hold it against you for the average job otherwise no one would ever be employed again after serving time.

Personally I think it's because the option to come earlier in life was not available to them, every older chap I've met who built successful businesses over here like there's more expats who still earn a western wage (to sell their services to I imagine) and these are the guys who generally came over in their 30s and 40s. I think it's the ones who came once the pension hit are a little resentful seeing the younger men arrive competing for the same apartments/villas and women.

There was a report around the start of the year that they were reworking the 99 year lease bill to have the land transferred to the government/land registry department (not sure the official language which was used) who then issue the lease (or something like that) then reverts to the state at the end of the lease, this was privately owned land. It was long term land grab language.

As someone who would like a 99-year lease (I'm under 40) over a 30, I love the sound of it, but the previous rumour that the owner(well, descendant of the owner) doesn't receive the land back, and it goes to the state, is terrible. Land grabs, no way I would participate in that.
