I don't like these things in thailand, it's exaggerated but the truth is that they are racist towards foreigners who come to live in their country. you can come without a visa but it is recommended you get an onward ticket flight to show to the airline prior to boarding, so they can see that you will leave the country later. It's the airline that want like that, before you fly to thailand. You can buy a cheap onward ticket, from thailand to a nearby asian country, very easy You could also buy ticket from some thai or asian airlines but it will cost you more. It's up to you

I think single tourist visa still has some value. I would come with a tourist visa for the first time and then I can do a few border runs. I don't really like to come to Thailand without a visa ( for the first time) if you come without a tourist visa and only get visa exemption are you sure you can do 2 border run per year after? Single Tourist visa is not expensive by the way
