Recent research in the UK showed that Older drivers tended to 1. Leave more room between themselves and the vehicle in front to prevent adding to an accident that happens to the car in front 2. Be more cautious whe joining a main road e.g. not take risks pulling out in front of oncoming cars by hoping they could accellerate fast enough to stop the oncoming car ramming them 3. Drive within the speed limits 4. Drive according to the road conditions rather than according to an inflated ego and ignorance 5. Use mirrors and signals more effectively 6. Have better lane discipline

There are a lot of 'victim shaming' posts on this topic i.e. he deserved to be pulled off his motorbike by a dangerous hanging wire because 1. He is old (irrelevant) 2. He wasnt wearing a helmet (also Irrelevant) I wish some people would grow up and stop trolling and actually discuss the topic rather than just finding unneccesary fault with the rider The wire was a danger to the public and the people you should be shaming are the ones who left it like that

It was reported on this forum recently that over 50% of all Thai children are brought up by their grandparents for various reasons, often single mothers (Divorced, Abandoned etc.) working in bars sending money home to support parents caring for their child, or parents forced into a nomadic life to find work leave the child in a stable envirionment so they can be educated properly (quality of education in Thailand is a debate I don't want to get into and is not relative to this conversation). Usually the children are loved and treated well but there is always a minority of deviant monsters like this who make the headlines. The mother probably had no one else to leave the child with. My fiance's sister and husband brought up their grandchild she is the happiest and most lovely little girl I have ever met, she calls her grandfather daddy and is very much loved. Her mother had her at university and the father abandoned her so she had to go to work in the entertainment industry, she is now married with a son and stays in contact but the little girl remains with her loving grandparents because they are the ones who have brought her up. Bad b*****ds like the grandmother in this report are all over the world, not just Thailand In the UK it was widely reported where foreign mothers let their children stay with relatives in England so they could get a better education and start in life only to find the children murdered or starved to death by the relatives they trusted.

Wearing a helmet would not make that much difference if the wire caught around the throat or the neck broken because it hit the helmet at high speed the head snaps backwards both circumstances would probably have killed him or any other motorcyclist outright. This isn't about whether he wore a helmet or not it's about the dangerous hanging wires which are death traps for motorcyclists,

Swedish Girl in Bangkok Taking the Muay Thai World by Storm!
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Muay Thai and Martial Arts
The more violent the society (or circles you move in) the more formally respectful members of that society are to each other, lest they are challenged to physical combat. The less violent the society the more cowardly dickheads come out of the woodwork with disrespect, unneccessary insults and criticsm because they feel protected from consequences of their hate speech. -
Thailand officially drops mask mandate in late night Royal Gazette order

The last barrier to tourism has at last been removed. I expect a lot more westerners will be eventually be arriving. Arrivals will probably be on a geometric or even exponential volume curve. Starting small rising slowly at first with the rate increasing month by month maybe 1.3 times the volume of the month before until the cooler season (Christmas New Year etc.) when it will spike. Word has to get around that Thailand is now open for business. The Tourism authority should invest in adverts extolling the beauty of Thailand in Europe and the USA to hasten the process. It's easy to make one advert with voice over in the language of the country where it is displayed. Invest in adverts on social media get things moving again get people earning money and lift them from the poverty of Covid. Advertise the 3 month retirement Visa for Older people as part of the deal. These people often have a higher disposable income than younger people with families and would be less troublesome than single males looking for sex and service -
It is common and harmless cultural practice in Thailand to seek advice from monks regarding the Lottery. Don't demean the culture of Thailand (which you obviously don't understand) it is against the rules of this forum. The user started filming before the monk attacked as evidence of his mis behaviour the monk then escalated his verbal abuse to physical attack on the old man. Other members of the family assisted the old man and the person filming the incident kept his (or her) head and continued recording which is excellent evidence against the monk so they can at least get the costs of his treatment from the organisation the monk represents

Very normal in american politics, and no one blinks an eye . Quite reasonable really. Family are usually people you can trust so employing your wife as your personal secretary is a good idea. Putting family in positions of authority in your organisation is also a good idea. Seems now that It is not allowed anymore in UK politics, but i suspect it still goes on.

Good Idea,. Model prisoners got the chance to get outside the prison and see the outside world, change of scenery. They probaby got a better meal then they would have in prison and a chance to sit amongst people who are not prisoners too. They cleared drains which are not maintained, doing a job that the local authority should do (but doesn't)

Garbage, grease blamed for blocking sewers as drainage efforts begin Monday
RobU replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
In the UK there are regular reports of Huge 'Fat (Grease) Balls' blocking sewers each subsequent one being the largest yet found. Fat balls are a fact of life in modern sewage systems. One of the main maintenance tasks is to find them and break them up. The Thai predeliction for not maintaining anything is the problem here -
Traffic offenders in Thailand who fail to pay fines may face arrest
RobU replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Illegaly crossing the centre line is stupid, you do not know the full reasons why it is there. Many people consider themselves experts, ignore rules and come a cropper when the reason for the rule is demonstrated usually by having an accident. The people on the other side of the line do not expect traffic coming in the opposite direction to cross that line (To overtake?) and will make perfectly reasonable but unexpected manouvers including change of road positioning which puts them in a head on collision with you when you are on their side of the road -
Traffic offenders in Thailand who fail to pay fines may face arrest

There seem to be quite a few people commenting on this topic who regularly break traffic law and are proud of it. Seems a bit two faced to complain about Thailand road deaths and accidents at the same time. -
1. PETA is US based charity and was unknown until it raised this particular issue over a year ago, it seems to be the only issue it pursues 2. Florida has a coconut milk industry picked by expensive mechanical means 3. Thai coconut milk is widely regarded as the best in the world 4. The Florida coconut milk producers are trying to compete with Thailand 5. Who contributes to PETA? 6. the monkeys used are not wild they are bred in captivity and have been for over a hundred years and are very well kept almost like family members 7. Buddhist monks run the training school for the owners and animals on an ethical basis 8. The monkeys are kept on long leashes when working because they might run away , they would not survive in the wild and would be attacked and killed by the dominant wild monkey troupes in the area. Hunting dogs in the UK are kept in kennels (Cages) when they are not working 9. Tesco UK banned Thai coconut milk when this issue was first raised (Knee Jerk Reaction) it rescinded that and now sells Thai Coconut milk in all it's stores again. It seems like patriotic Walmart has found an excuse to support the Florida industry or is having a knee jerk reaction same as Tesco UK did This story seems to crop up now on a yearly basis.

Phuket City Municipality repaints crosswalks to increase road safety
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Good news these ambulance pick up points are now more visible ambulances stop there on their designated routes to pick up passengers -
When I worked in surgical operating theatres we discussed the wearing of masks and the girls tended to favour them because of cosmetic reasons rather than clinical (a new study had ben published indicating that wearing masks was not needed to protect the patient) it made them look mysterious and attractive. Most of them took very great care with eye makup and lashes to enhance the effect, even the most plain looked attractive with a mask.

Majority of ASEAN NOW expat viewers want to remain in Thailand

I had to go private once £80 for an appointment with a consultant. No idea about health insurance, pre existing conditions and age make it very expensive -
Majority of ASEAN NOW expat viewers want to remain in Thailand
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I. It's the hospital administration who need to determine it not doctors 2. I don't know I only quoted the rules My friend brought her father back to England from the USA because he has an expensive heart condition. He had been living and working there full time for years without returning to the UK he has successfully registered with a UK GP and gets all his care for free. What I was saying is that the checking process may be tightened up perhaps by cross referencing entry/exit with NHS number -
Majority of ASEAN NOW expat viewers want to remain in Thailand
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If you are out of the UK for more than 9 months all rights to benefits are legally revoked including free NHS care, you have to remain in residency for a specified period. However most GP's and Hospitals either ignore it or are unaware of the ruling. This may change with the current pressure on the NHS -

Pointless returning to the UK 4 hours wait for an emergency ambulance, 6 weeks wait to see your GP. Waiting lists of 1 year or more to see a specialist or have an operation once you have seen a specialist. You have to go private to get anything now. Deliberate policy to remove free healthcare -
Yes, my fiance was in Pattaya yesterday she sent me picture of the market she visited everyone in the pictures was wearing a mask (including her) all of them were Thai no foreigners visible. She is travelling to her buddhist retreat today and has to wear a mask on the bus. Our house is in Nong Khai Province and masks are rigidly enforced there. In Udon Thani you can be fined between 4000 and 20000 baht for not wearing a mask
