Not the news that the Thai tourist industry wanted to hear.
Vietnam and the Philippines will follow soon
-
Westerners will now be going to Bali soon, which in turn will force Vietnam and the Philippines to open up otherwise they will miss out on all that huge amount of tourist currency and the 10,s of thousands of job's it brings.
Another nail in the coffin of the Thai tourist industry.

Vietnam will open to the Chinese first. That's where the money is.
IF that does happen the Chinese are hardly likely to come back to Thailand when they see how much they can get for their Yen compared to Thailand.

If China wants them extradited they will be extradited. This government has a history of extraditions to China upon request.
The Elite card offers no residency rights nor any citizenship pathway and thus no protection or viable solution whatsoever.
When China says jump Thailand says how high.

With exports on a downward spiral due to the overvalued Baht, and have been for a while and zero tourism is going backwards at an alarming rate.

"The Bank of Thailand (BOT) expects only 8 million foreign visitors this year, down 80% from a record 39.8 million last year"
if this number would be set as the new NORMAL you would hear delightful applauds from the environment, the mountains, the sea, the corals and the Thai people in general who are fed up with all these dirty, noisy tourists. Structures which will suffer are mostly mafia- like organisations with the loss of easy money. And Thai individuals should be flexible enough = not wait for the not-coming improvement of the situation but look for proper jobs instead
They will be lucky to get a 1/4 of that unless they BS the figures

Vietnam doesn't want you either.....
They want the foreign currency though so it becomes a balancing act.
Vietnam like the Philippines will open up before Thailand and mop up them tourists dollars that Thailand doesn't want

Arrive in the Philippines and you go into isolation for 2 weeks at your own expense and cannot travel domestically unless you have all documentation required by the LGU from where you depart and the LGU where you arrive, and there's plenty of it required.
The Philippines will open up before Thailand and your money goes further in the Philippines. It's a no brainer

If Thailand thinks they can survive in the modern world and prosper without the money that tourism bring in they are totally deluded. Millions of jobs will be lost directly and indirectly.
Other countries in the region will be rubbing there hands with glee at the thought that they will get billions in tourism money and 100,000's of new jobs that Thailand doesn't want.

If Thailand doesn't want foreign tourists I'm sure other countries in the area will.
I'm sure if Thailand doesn't want all the tourism money Vietnam and the Philippines will.
Billions lost in foreign tourism money will cost millions of jobs in Thailand. Directly and indirectly

Very good points add to that add all the supply companies who supply the above from the sale of fuel, food, cleaning products, souvenirs etc.not only hotels, bars closing down
Indeed it's all a knock on effect

If by "normal" you mean 38 million tourists in a year, then yeah, that's a long, long, long time in the future.
The Thai tourism model is based on low-price/high volume supported by massive infrastructure: planes, buses, hotels, buffets, etc. To start with you need thousands of flights to transport tens of millions of tourists. Even the airlines don't forecast this happening anytime soon.
I dont think anyone is suggesting that "tourists" will stay away forever? Just not gonna see (38) millions in the next five years.
Obviously a vaccine would help, can see countries requiring it for entry.
Yes there will be pent-up demand, and yes, dozens of countries will all be looking to incentivize tourism.
Agree that insurance will be mandatory, or they will increase the PSC to 1,000 or 1,500, with a portion skimmed for the MoH to pay delinquent bills.
Less tourists arriving in Thailand means less airport workers wanted at the airports
Less tourists arriving arriving at the airport means less taxes are needed at the airport to take people to hotels.
Less tourists staying at hotels means hotels will close or the one's that can stay open will need less staff.
With less people in tourists areas means that restaurants and bars that cater for tourists will either close of have to reduce staff.
There are going to be a lot of people out of work in Thailand due to the lack of tourists

People say things won't go back to normal "ever", tourists will stay away "forever"... thats a long time and its silly to say that. Two years or so, yeah I could see that. Thai people can get by until things start to come back. They have much more patience than westerners, seems to me.
Lets put this in simple terms. If Vietnam or the Philippines opens up before Thailand, people from Western countries will go there and when they see how much more they are getting for their money compared to Thailand and the over valued Baht they are very unlikely to want to return to Thailand.

It's not just Pattaya. My partner and I are in Bangkok for a week or so. Today we took the MRT and it had so few passengers we could actually sit down. Can't remember the last time that happened. The malls we visited had a fair number of people but we noticed at lunch time that a number of the restaurants had few customers.
Reality and things will only get worse.

If Vietnam or the Philippines opens up before Thailand that in fact will kill tourism in Thailand when the tourists see how much more they get for their money in them countries compared to Thailand.

I suspect it's a lot higher than 30% and it will get worse
No tourists coming into the kingdom = Job losses at the airports.
No tourists at the airports = Taxi drivers struggling to make a living.
No tourists staying in hotels = hotel workers losing their jobs through lack of bookings
No tourists going to restaurants and bars = job losses in them industries which means no money going to mama and papa.

Just like Spain, Greece, and Italy have realised the potential economic catastrophe without tourists and already, maybe too soon, opened up to UK tourists, Thailand will have to also open up to tourists when the economic s h i t hits the proverbial fan. Because economic collapse will cause more deaths than the virus.
If Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines open up before Thailand, The country will find it hard to get tourism back on the scale it was before as these tourists will see how much further their money goes in these countries compared to Thailand. Thailand could be losing out on potentially billions of Dollars/Pounds/Euros.

The reality is Airport workers are losing their jobs due to lack of tourists.
Taxi drivers aren't earning enough to support their families due to lack of tourists
Hotels are closing due to lack of tourists.
Restaurants and bars are closing due to lack of tourists.
Overall there are a 100's of thousands of people out of work due to lack of tourists in Thailand and they don't have the benefit of social security.

I am surprised many companies aren't taking this opportunity to move out of Thailand to Vietnam/Cambodia/India etc.
Give it time. It will happen, unless there is a sharp drop in the value of the overvalued baht

China and Thailand both had Covid S strain while EU and US have Covid G strain. The "G" strain has shown to be much more contagious. Might be why China's numbers were so low and Thailands almost minuscule compared to other "farang" countries.
Of course UK and US aren't wearing a lot of masks either ....No intelligent person believes the low Covid-19 figures put out by China and Thailand

I think it's obvious that Vietnam will open it's borders before Thailand just to get that foreign currency that Thailand doesn't want, and before the Philippines open it's borders and lets also not forget Chinese do not spend a lot of money when they are here, so Vietnam will want tourists from Western countries as well which Thailand doesn't want.
